Clijsters out of Australian Open

Kim Clijsters will not compete in next January's Australian Open because of her persistent wrist injury.
Last year's runner-up in Melbourne has decided to spend more time resting instead of rushing back her return.

"Kim's wrist obviously isn't going to be rehabilitated," Open chief Paul McNamee told The Australian newspaper. "We wish her all the best."

Jelena Dokic, who used to compete for Australia, has also opted out of the first Grand Slam of the season.

Dokic has not played in the Australian Open since 2001 when she lost in the first round.

But the 21-year-old would have had to rely on a wildcard next season because her ranking has tumbled to 127th.

Clijsters is still ranked 22nd in the world despite only playing a handful of matches last season.

The Belgian had an operation on her left wrist early in the season but injured it again on her return to the tour.

Meanwhile, the rest of the sport's top players are expected to turn out at Melbourne Park for the Open which starts on 17th January.

such a stiring thread title. tsk tsk tsk.

I'm glad Kim is taking her time to heal and rehabilitate her wrist. It's been thought for sometime that she wouldn't be able to go to the AO and most were hoping she wouldn't because she needs to be very careful now not to sustain further injury.

it is stirring... :)
Wanted to get people to comment. But I guess I'll see if Kimmy plays the week after the AO to believe or not

turns out it was premature!!!!

Clijsters could play Aussie Open

Kim Clijsters has denied reports that she has pulled out of January's Australian Open because of her persistent wrist injury.
Open chief Paul McNamee had said: "Kim's wrist obviously isn't going to be rehabilitated."

But her spokesman insisted she had simply delayed submitting her entry.

"The doctors are assessing her injury on a weekly basis and if there is no risk she could play. But if there's the least risk she will stay away."

Despite being absent from the WTA entry list for the tournament, which begins on 17 January, Clijsters would be certain to get a wild card if she requested one.

Four-time champion Monica Seles, who has not played since last year's French Open, is another absentee because of an injured left foot.

well it has been said on her website that she hasn't entered it but she's not ruling it out (she could get a wild card). But they clearly say that if there is any risk for her wrist she will give a miss. :)

Just as a notice, glad to see people talking about Kim in here (even if it's not too much), without people making nasty comments about the fact they're not together anymore :tape:...

uh huh........ that whole CCL was pretty weird if you ask me. It's sorta like.... you know.... chill....

But maybe some people there didn't really like Lleyton and only liked Kim. I like them both, and I think it's too bad they aren't together anymore, but it doesn't really affect my life or anything. As far as I'm concerned we always discussed Kim here, had cheering sessions during her matches, etc. I don't think anything has changed. I expect talk about Kim will increase once she starts playing again. :)

I couldn't have said it better! :worship:
CCL really did my head in for a while and I must confess I don't enjoy going there as much I used to. I regret I didn't come here more often before but I'm making up for it :)

Kim and Ll both rock, together or apart. Anybody who doesn't think so is obviously incorrect :p

I totally agree with that!!!
Hope they will be able to play lots of tennis in the future and they both will stay infury-free for a very long time! :)
(Kim first has to recover from her injury of course, but I'm confident that she's taking no risks this time :) )

Completely concisely correct Marls!

It's a pity she may not be able to play, the sooner that 'first public appearance' is over and done with the better imo

Hey Yas, since over at LLL, posters still discuss about Kim, how come we don't do the same thing over CCL? I like 'em both, so, it's ok to visit Kim's forum then come here, but since I'm too lazy (you know that right :p).

I dont want to make a big deal out of this, but with all due respect to the Kim fans in CCL who felt it was time that the "Lleyton's Lounge" thread was closed, you should remember that here in LLL you didn't have an equivalent thread for Kim exclusively (at least I dont think you do/did). If you had, it might be that some LLL posters might have also thought that it might no longer be appropriate to have it, given that they are no longer associated.

I think its time we all moved on from the break up, but I just wanted to make that point that we should compare "like" with "like", to be fair to CCLers.

That's all good then. It's nice to know the CCLers will continue to cheer for Lleyton and have threads about him from time to time on that board. I know people here will get together to cheer for Kim during her matches when she returns and it's nice to know the CCLers will be getting together to cheer for Lleyton too. :)

However, if you think we would have had a thread about Kim deleted, you sort of underestimate the affection for Kim that most have here. I doubt anyone would have even suggested it. But we are a very small group here and don't have the diversity found in CCL.

I think the point I was making is what annoyed me in CCL is that people who didn't seem to like Lleyton reacted very strongly against the Lleyton lounge in CCL and it went to extremes when they broke up :wavey:. That's why I made the comparison between the two forums and I think people have reacted in a much more adult way than they have in CCL. But I'm sure a lot of CCLers like Lleyton and I'm definitely one of them. To be honest I am actually a bigger fan now than I've ever been. Maybe because now I don't associate one with the other and enjoy watching him for himself and not because he's with Kim  . I can be a CCLer and a LLLer nothing wrong with that! :p

To be fair Fiona, whether their was a LL or not in CCL given how brutal some people's reaction was it wouldn't have made any difference  . I mean let's face it, going to report a post as a bad post just because it was about Lleyton to all mods do you think that was a civilised and adult way of behaving? I agree that the lounge had no reason to exist anymore but there are other ways of dealing with it. And that's what I personally disliked a lot in CCL, that hate reaction towards people. You don't go and hassle people they should go and talk somewhere else about Lleyton. I am not directing that at you personnally at all fiona but you know others have done.

I believe that Kim is undergoing physiotherapy for her wrist, and trying to decide whether she's healthy enough to play in the Aussie Open.

All of this is just a smokescreen :p The factor that'll really decide if she plays is if she can scrounge up a more attractive B-lister to dally with than Ll has :p
