Boris Becker has set in motion a deal that guarantees the future of the Hamburg Masters tournament for at least another year.
A deal has been struck between Swiss agency BCI, which represents Becker, and the German Tennis Federation (DTB).

And the German tennis legend was reportedly instrumental in the negotiations, which will see BCI work alongside ACE Group London.

"I'm really looking forward to this cooperation between BCI, the ACE Group and myself," said Becker.

"In the ACE Group we have won a top partner for our project. This is a very important signal for the German tennis market."

Men's tennis is going through a difficult time at the moment due to the world recession and, more pertinently, last year's collapse of sports marketing group ISL.

Sponsorship

The problem is highlighted in Germany, where interest in the sport has declined dramtically since Becker and Steffi Graf retired.

Stuttgart has already lost its tournament to Madrid, and the claycourt event in Hamburg looked to be next before this latest intervention.

"Our goal was to make sure the tournament remained a Masters Series event, and we have achieved that through the commitment of BCI and the ACE Group," said DTB president Georg von Waldenfels.

The new deal guarantees the DTB 1.5 million euros in sponsorship rights for the next year and ensures the event will take place in 2003

Well, considering Boris' success in business so far, you can expect that the tournament will be bankrupt next year.
