Top Entries For Asian Tennis Champs
The official list of player entrants for the 2002 Asian Tennis
Championships to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan October 14-20 has been released with plenty of talent from 15 different Asian nations.

One of the players to watch out for is Pakistan's Aisam Ul Haq Qureshi who at age 22 is currently ranked 266 in singles and 97 in doubles. Qureshi has excelled in challengers so far this year with three doubles titles to his credit and reached the third round of Wimbledon doubles.

In the women's entries Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei is another good prospect at 16 years old she is currently ranked 223 in singles and 195 in singles. Hsieh was ranked as high as 143 earlier in 2002. She has Chia-Jung Chuang as a fellow Taipei player ranked at 429.

The male players from Chinese Taipei are also strong with Yen-Hsun Lu a semifinalist last year and Yeu-Tzuoo Wang ranked at 189 and 224 respectively.

Korea will be another top nation with 140th ranked Mi-Ra Jeon who reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2001 likely to be one of the top seeds in the women's singles.

Japan have the experienced pair of Goichi Motomura at 186 and Michihisa Ondoa along with the likely seeds of Akiko Morigami (125) and Rika Fujiwara (162).

India have their national singles No 1 Rohan Bopanna at 359th while China has some young talent in the form of Peng Sun in the men and Yanze Xie at 374 in the women's tournament.

Indonesia has its two regular international players Suwandi Suwandi and American college student Peter Handoyo as its representatives.

Iran have two players, Andoosha Shahgholi and Ashkan Shokoofi entered while Tajikistan also have two players as do the United Arab Emirates.

Home town heroes Oleg Ogorodov at 148th and Vadim Kutsenko 162nd will be seeded players on their home courts and will want to show their fans they can produce top tennis as well as earn a place in the Australian Open.

Other nations with players entered are Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines and Turkmenistan.

A place in Australian Open singles main draw is one of the rewards for winning the US$100,000 Asian Tennis Championships.

The winner of the men's singles title and the women's singles title is
awarded a wildcard entry into the Australia Open in January which can prove to be a big bonus for a players ranking.

Last year second seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand won the men's tournament singles title when it was held in Hong Kong. Srichaphan was then ranked 120 in the world and defeated the top seed of Korea Hyung Taik Lee ranked 116th in the final.

In 2001 the women's draw was won by Korea's Yoon-Jeong Cho who was ranked 115 but has gone on to improve her ranking to its current position of 84. The top seed last year was Indonesia's Wynne Prakusya then 89 in the world followed by Japan's Saori Obata at 94.

TOMASHEVICH BREEZES
Uzbekistan Davis Cupper Dmitri Tomashevich breezed through his first round match against Sergei Makashin of Tajikistan winning 6/2, 6/2 at the Asian Tennis Championships 2002 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Modest about his victory, he commented that he had not started out confidently as he was still recovering from a shoulder injury and had some difficulty adjusting to the competition balls.

He expects that his next opponent is likely to be Rohan Bopanna of India whom he played against some years ago when Bopanna was still a junior. He is looking forward to a good game with Bopanna whose game, he said, has matured since he last played with him.

FIRST PRO TOURNAMENT SUCCESSFUL ALREADY
Philippine tennis player Anna Patricia Santos has had a first round win in the women's singles of the Asian Tennis Championships at Tashkent.
Santos easily defeated local player Velena Mamutova 6/1 6/2 in cold conditions and will now play seventh seed Liza Andriyani of Indonesia in the second round. Andriyani is ranked 550 on the WTA international singles rankings.
"I played a good game today, but it was cold and hard to warm up in the game," she said.
Santos, 22, is looking forward to playing more tournaments next year after she graduates from university.
"I graduate from my home economics degree in March and even if I don't do well here I want to play more tennis," said Santos who was making her debut in her first professional tournament.
Santos has never played "or seen" Andriyani before but is keen to play the match and test herself against an internationally ranked player.

SEEDS READY FOR ACTION
Oleg Ogorodov, 30, commences his challenge to win the Asian Tennis Championship singles title tomorrow (Wednesday 16 Oct) in Tashkent and a place in the 2003 Australian Open.

The top seed for the event at 162nd in the world on the ATP entry rankings also won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Pusan, Korea. He beat 2nd seed for the Asian Champs Motomura in straight sets in the Games quarter finals.

Ogorodov takes on Kazakhstan's Alexey Kedriouk in the second round of the tournament in what will be one of the feature games of the day. Kedriouk has a ranking of 533 and a big serve which can win him free points.

Kedriouk beat Dimitri Mazur in the first round of singles in straight sets.

This year Ogorodov has had some good results in singles making the second round of Roland Garros and the Washington D.C. ATP event as well as reaching the semis of Edinburgh and the quarters of Samarkand and Biella.

Second seed and fellow Uzbek Davis Cup player Vadim Kutsenko plays Dias Doskarayev also of Kazakhstan. Doskarayev defeated Hao Lu of China in the only three set men's singles match of the first two days.

Kutsenko, 25, reached the quarterfinals of the Asian Games last week and usually plays well in his own country.

Goichi Motomura the third seed of Japan plays Peng Sun of China in his second round match. As a seed Motomura received a bye in the first round and has a ranking of 189 versus Sun's ranking of 640.

The Japanese top women seeds for the singles Akiko Morigami and Rika Fujiwara play against Jing Jing Liu of China and local talent Ivanna Isroilova respectively.

Morigami is ranked 121 on the WTA rankings and Fujiwara 163.

Of local interest in the women's singles event is the first round match between Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and Sania Mirza of India. Amanmuradova, 18, was beaten by Mirza in the finals of the Hyderabad Futures event held in India earlier this year. Local support will be out in force in the hope that she will gain sweet revenge.

The promising youngster is one of the key players of the Uzbekistan's women's national team who made a substantial contribution to the 2001 World Youth Cup in Miami, USA.
