It's like a normal tournament, although Horna and Acasuso are alternates in case someone withdraws.
BTW, I'll be going for the SF and F, I wanted to go the whole week but I have some tests. But I'm sure I'll watch them on tv, so you'll get reports from me ;)

I'll only be able to go in the week end, cause I have some tests...

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but there are strong rumors that Cañas won't play, and Massu is in doubt due to his surgery, although he says he'll be there.

Do you know why Canas may not play, Jazz? I do hope it's not more injuries after all his problems in 2003. He had just begun to get back to full fitness and success again and it would be so sad

I hope so too...but you know, he'll have to deal with it the best way for him and his family. When you lose a parent or a close relative, you never know how you'll react to it till you live it yourself...and though you think you're gonna react a certain way, it might turn very differently when the worst happens so...I simply hope he'll make the rightest decision for him and his family. Whatever it will be, it'll be perfectly understandeable.

No - I am sure he hasn't either - the Funeral hasn't even taken place yet. From my own experience, my own advice would probably be not to rush back into things too quickly. Although there is a great argument for carrying on as normal, the grief will catch up wth you sooner or later - everyone needs time and space to grieve, and sometimes if you rush around too quickly and act normally it will be even worse when it does "hit" you.

You would think playing some lame exhibition event would be lower down on the list of priorities right now.

And yet within hours of this desperately sad news becoming public knowledge you're all in here speculating about his participation in some knock-around exhibition event. This is hardly showing the man much respect in my opinion.

And sometimes it can "hit" you at the most inopportune moments. If he chooses to miss this event, it would be quite understandable.

There is only so much I am going to say here, but for one I have worked in the funeral industry for many years, and if you have been a person that has discovered the body of one of your loved ones who topped themselves, then come back to me.

Yes, it's a very sad event, but at the same time the funeral has been held and what he is going to do afterwards? They don't pay bereavement leave in tennis and this is his job and he has to push forward and remember the good times and not dwell on his grief, if David keeps dwelling on that, how is that going to help him.

Obviously sad to hear of your own personal situation. This really isn't a competition to figure out who is most qualified to speak so best I ignore your latter comment.

I hardly think skipping a tennis exhibition scheduled a few short days after the untimely death of his father could be considered dwelling on anything. And maybe I misunderstood the concept of an exhibition event, but those that I've attended have always been played in a good spirit, with a few jokes exhanged between players, mixed in with a little healthy competition and banter with the crowd. Maybe it's just a little unrealistic to expect David to be in the mood for such fun and games so soon? But whatever that's for him to decide.

I just found it a little tasteless for people to rush into this thread a mere few hours after the news broke and start fretting about him playing this event.

Action Jackson
12-14-2004, 03:01 AM
Don't be sorry for what happened at all, it was something that I had to deal with and had to put behind me.

Of course he has to do whatever is best for him and there is going to be some grief, but if tennis can get some of it out his system, then that's good and it's not as if he is going to get support that he needs. Seriously he is a tennis player and that is his job and what is he going to do if he isn't playing tennis? He has quite a strong character and I think this sad event will make him more determined.

12-14-2004, 12:40 PM
I can't speak for David and it really doesn't matter if he plays or not, but I suffered a pretty big loss (my father)- it guess 3 weeks ago now- and it's been good for me to get back to work and live life normally again. If you don't you can torment yourself with thinking about all of the things you should have done- could have done- shouldn't have done- you get the idea.

I think GWH was just saying that some people need that to cope. Everyone copes in different ways............... That's my 2 cents worth coming from someone who is going through it as we speak.

David will do what is best for him and his family.

Choupi
12-14-2004, 05:13 PM
Well it all depends on your character. Some would need more time to be able to express the grief , others would prefer going back to normal life as soon as possible. Personally, when I've been in David's situation, I've prefered going back to work only 1 week after the sad event...But that's just the way I am. I would have gone crazy if I had spent more time cut from the outside world. But whatever his decision may be, we'll have to accept it.

I wonder if David would still be practising even if he lost his first match. If he plays Gonzalez that could be good for him as he has a good record against him.

I never knew you liked Horna. I like Horna as well, and hope he can win a title in 05.

jazz_girl

I don't think he'll be able to play though, two players must withdraw for him to play, cause Franco Squillari is before him in the list. I still don't understand why Massú was replaced by Gonzalez, when he wasn't even in the alternate list...

Action Jackson

You like Horna's acting don't you? I am going to ask him about the Mariano show.

It's interesting maybe it was in the contract that they want 1 Chilean in the tournament and when Massu withdrew, then they picked Gonzo.

Old Franco Squillari there is a name I won't forget, the huge man with the huge forehand.

jazz_girl

Well Franco's brother, Pierre, is the one organizing this tournament, along with Lobo, I think.
I remember last year, Cañas was playing Calleri in the SF, and after losing Agustín said that he was somehow glad he lost cause he was getting married the day after that, and if he had won, his wife would have killed him LOL

Action Jackson
12-15-2004, 11:51 AM
I think they should make the guys play in football shirts of their favourite team. I think David playing in a River Plate shirt against Gonzo in a Colo Colo shirt would be interesting.

I hope that Willy withdrawing is just precaution. He worked his ass off to get back where he is. The only reason that Tommy Haas can beat out Willy for comeback player of the year is probably because he was gone for 2 years and no longer ranked. Personally, I would hope for a tie

The guys will play for a car, and this is what Luis Lobo said about Coria not wanting to participate: "I'm not frustrated. We talked to him, he thanked us the invitation and we wish him well".
"We're very happy to organize this cup again and we want to thank the players and sponsors, without them this would be impossible"

"This is more than just an exhibition and that's why we decide to make the draw bigger. I think we're gonna see some good tennis cause there's a car at stake and they're gonna kill each other to get the title"

Well, he had a lot of drug and health problems, so the fatness is not his worst problem. He's in Cuba doing a rehab, but to tell you the truth, this is the first time in years I see him so well. So as I said, I don't care if he's fat, as long as he's not taking drugs again.
It was soooo weird seeing Vilas and Maradona together, especially talking and laughing. Really cool :)

LOL! I know! Today they hit a ball boy with the ball. And they're hitting it really hard. I'm thinking of taking a helmet with me tomorrpw, especially for the Gonzalez vs Acasuso match :)

LOL! I don't know how I'll manage to stay awake tomorrow. It's 1:30 am here, and tomorrow I have a very important final at school, and I'll wake up at 6am, and then I have the tennis matches, which I'm sure will take some time to finish LOL!

As much as I'm sure you've studied you can still pass your exam being half-asleep ;)

You'll probably wake up by the time the matches start thanks to adrenaline :D :yeah:

The way these two matches have gone, I would prepare for a LONG night. I think it will be an emotional night for David and all those that will be in attendance.

I'm sure he has been. I'm sort of surprised that he kept to his committment but he could also consider this a personal tribute to. We can only specualte. If it was me I would probably play too...a safe outlet to vent the anger and frustration.

Thank you Jazz! I've just read your reports and I'm still out of breath! What a great match between Gaston and Juan. I wish sbdy has taped it...

How I wish to have been with you last night...but as I've already written in another thread, I wasn't able to coz I was at work and our internet connection is cut at 10pm so... I would have stayed awake for as long as it would have been needed, though it was pretty late for us here. It wouldn't have been the first time! Anyway, Jazz, I thank you very very very much for your job. And I wish you have an incredible time seeing David.

Like Choupi I wasn't able to stay up so have only just caught up with last night's scores and reports. Sounds like two great matches - and I am really pleased that Gaston and Agustin won through :) Tonight David will play - I wish I could be there to support him - but I'm sure Jazz will cheer loud enough for all of us. I'm not expecting great things from him on the court - don't think anyone is in the circumstances, - but just for him to be there is courageous in my opinion and I'm sure the people will support him. Good Luck to David - and have fun Jazzita :)

Latest news: David's not confirmed. He booked a court to train with Monaco at 11am, but will decide today, along with his mother, whether he'll play or not.

I hope for your sake that he plays Jazz - but I hope for his that he makes the right decision for himself if that makes sense. If he hasn't even practised yet, he will not be paying to the best of his ability - maybe he doesn't want to let himself down like that.

I agree Rosie, and what I find weird is that yesteday he was confirmed a LOT by ESPN. I hope that wasn't a way to put pressure on him, and that he was really willing to play. I guess we'll find out today.

Come to think of it...do you know why Gastón is called El Gato???

I always assumed it was because he moves very gracefully on the court - but I actually don't know for sure.

Come to think of it...do you know why Gastón is called El Gato???

Well I've asked this question to Melu and here's what she has answered me. It was back in 1998 for the Copa Ericsson. Gaston was playing slowly, returning every ball but in a very smoothy way, like cats would do. And the journalists decided then to call him "el gato". But you must know that he really dislikes being called this way. It's usually used by those who are rather unfriendly to him among the players. That's the main reason you'll never read any post of mine calling him that way.

I hope I've helped you a little.
