Fed wins 2nd TMC title, caps off incredible year!!!

Darkheart

What a year!

11 titles, including 3 slams, 3 TMS titles, and now the TMC title.

- 74-6 record this year.
- 17-match win streak.
- 6-match win streak vs Hewitt.
- 18-0 perfect record against top-10 opponents this year, 23-0 record dating back to last year's TMC.
- 13 straight wins in finals.
- 13-1 lifetime record at the TMC.

Fed has really distanced himself from the rest of the pack of "New Balls". He almost lapped the field. When he is "in the zone", he's near invincible.

Fed is destined for true greatness, although some would say he has already achieved some of it.

Yay! :bounce:

Okay everyone, here are the stats....

In last two years has compiled a 17-2 record in finals after going 4-6 previous three years...Became first player since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win three Grand Slam titles in a season and fourth player overall in Open Era to win at least three in a year (Connors won three in 1974, Laver won four in 1969)…Became first player in Open Era to win his first four Grand Slam finals...

Roger Federer capped one of the most dominant seasons in tennis history when he defeated Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-2 to win his second consecutive Tennis Masters Cup title in Houston. The Swiss World No. 1 won his 11th title of a remarkable season which included three Grand Slam titles and three ATP Masters Series titles. Federer's win was his 13th straight victory in a final - an Open Era record - and his 23rd consecutive match win against a Top 10 opponent. Federer defeated Hewitt, who finishes the year at No.3, for the sixth consecutive time this season. Federer collects $1.52 million and passes $6 million prize money for the year.

His staggering statistics included a 13-0 record against Top 10 opponents (18-0 going back to TMC in Houston), defeating every member of current Top 10...He also went 10-0 in singles finals (12-0 going back to 2003) and joined Hall-of-Famers Borg and McEnroe to win 12 straight finals in last 25 years… Now

Became first player to win multiple titles on clay, grass and hard courts in a season and first since Borg in 1979 to win consecutive titles on those surfaces…Compiled winning streaks of 10-more four different times, including a career-best 23 in a row from June 7-August 1...

Ranked among Top 10 in several serving categories -- No. 1 in second serve points won (57%) No. 2 in break points saved (72%), No. 3 in service games won (91%), No. 4 in first serve points won (78%) and No. 8 in aces (517)…In addition to his overall serving dominance, he posted 12 bagel sets won (five against Hewitt) and 23 'bread sticks' (6-1 sets won).

Opened season at Australian Open and dropped only two sets while posting victories over Hewitt (4th), Nalbandian (QF), Ferrero (SF) and Safin (F)…Became No. 1 afterwards for first time on Feb. 2 and clinched top spot earliest ever on Sept. 13 after winning first US Open crown (d. Hewitt)…

Lost first match of year to Henman in QF of Rotterdam on Feb. 20…Won next two outings in Dubai (d. Lopez) and ATP Masters Series Indian Wells (d. Henman)…In May, turned in most impressive tournament on clay at AMS Hamburg where he defeated Gaudio (1st), Gonzalez (3rd), Moya (QF), Hewitt (SF) and Coria (F)…His only Grand Slam loss came to Kuerten in 3rd RD at Roland Garros…Then reeled off four consecutive titles -- repeat efforts in Halle (d. Fish) and Wimbledon (d. Roddick), his first Swiss title in Gstaad (d. Andreev) and AMS Toronto (d. Roddick)…

Made his fifth US Open appearance and came away with title, defeating Agassi (QF), Henman (SF) and Hewitt (F)…

After a two-week break, captured title in Bangkok (d. Roddick) to become first player since Muster (12) in 1995 to win at least 10 titles…

It would certainly seem that way, it almost seems like a matchup between Henman and Hewitt, one players game, plays right into the others. However, I'm sure people never thought Lendl would come back and win 17 matches in a row against Connors, after losing the 1st 8 without even winning a set, so you never know.

An absolutely outstanding year from Roger and winning this title just made it even sweeter. Sure I wish they played the best of 5, but I can see the reasoning behind make it best of 3, and no protecting Hewitt from a further drubbing wasn't one of them.

Lleyton was very gracious in his speech and got a great ovation. It was much better that Bud Collins did it and Jim hardly spoke so that made it worthwhile.

Then the rains came but 2 hrs later I saw it was 6-3, 6-2 Roger winner i couldnt believe it, what a spectacular year. I hope he remains healthy and starts the 05' season on fire. This is just awesome, its been quite a sad few tennis seasons without Hingis on the womens tour but now another Swiss has taken the void in the mens side and i cant stop admiring the way he does magic with a tennis racket. :worship: :worship: :worship:

I can only congratulate Roger, he's had a great year and he's offered great tennis to all of us. He totally deserves it, of course. In head-to-head matches Roger is way better than his nearest rivals. Their problem is the more they play him the more he learns ways to beat them. Hence the dismal record of Roddick and Hewitt against him this year. Roger is more vulnerable to lower ranked players who he rarely plays.

Probably the man most likely to beat Federer in a GS event is Safin because they haven't played much. But having said that Roger pretty much owns him too.

Thanks Rogi for a wonderful year of tennis

I'm really getting to admire Hewitt as well.

Next year I expect Safin, Hewitt, Roddick, Agassi & Coria to pose a greater challenge.

Agassi, Henman, Coria, Ferrero and Moya won't be able to compete week-in week-out with the top 4 now - I can't see any of them reaching the top 4 for a long time now, and in the case of all of them except Coria, maybe never again. :bigcry:

Well done Roger for raising the bar of men's tennis to an incredible height - even Ivo karlovic could walk below it without stooping! I just hope some of the other guys below him can find out a way to match him somehow.

By the way - why is everyone saying that Roger has won 23 matches in a row against the top 10? Doesn't the Kooyong Classic count when Agassi whipped him? Surely Roger is only on an 18 match unbeaten run? I'm guessing that the Kooyong doesn't count! Not to take anything away from Roger's outstanding year though! :)

what a turn-around for Roger....7-2 at the start of the year, gagging the DC SF.....then it was just pay-back time. 6!! straight wins in one year....4 straight matches with at least one bagel....dang, Roger!

The thing is the guy isn´t just BEATING top 10 players, he isn´t even dropping SETS! Wins this tournament back to back without losing a match and dropping just TWO sets. That´s sick!

No.

Last 13 sets:

Hamburg 6-0,6-4: Roger was serving for the match at 5-3 in set #2 but got broken back by Hewitt.

Wimbledon: 6-1,6-7,6-0,6-4: Hewitt broke to go up 4-3 in set #4 but Roger broke him back, held then broke again to close out the match.

U.S. Open: 6-0,7-6,6-0: Federer serving for second set at 5-4 Hewitt broke back.

TMC RR: 6-3,6-4 Federer unbroken.

TMC Final: 6-3,6-2 Federer unbroken.

Still- to get broken only 3 times in 13 sets is also very impressive. 4 times in 17 sets if you add the AO meeting to the count.

Well done Roger! Truly a legendary year :worship:

I can remember Roger's loss to Horna in the first round of last year's French Open. I think that was one of the most disappointing losses ever for Roger and people were actually saying on TV that he had underachieved and wondered if he was ever going to fulfil his potential and perform well at the big events. It's just been amazing what he has done from that loss to now. Congrats Roger :) and I can't wait to see you again next year!

Well done Lleyton on your run here and your great year. I also remember hearing people on TV early this year saying they didn't think it was likely he would get back to where he was and were writing him off as a threat but I always knew you would come back strong Lleyton :yeah:
