David's interview on the Tennis Channel

Today on the Tennis Channel they showed a 30 minute interview that was done by Chris Meyers with David Nalbandian. The Tennis Channel is trying to expose Americans to non-US players and they have also interviewed Rainer, Marat, Sebastian, and others. The funny thing about the show is that Chris always wears a suit and tie and the player he interviews is always dressed very casually. This was done during the US Open and David must have come straight from the showers because his hair was still wet. He was wearing a red sleeveless Yonex shirt, brown shorts and flip flops. I was struck by what great teeth this kid has. I donít know if he had braces, or veneers, or is just one of those people blessed with white, straight teeth.

Also, I was surprised at how good his English was, but if you need to argue with refs and yell at Mattress Mac, then I guess you need to devote time to improving your English skills.

Most of the photos they showed during the interview were taken around the time of his Wimbledon final. There was one hysterical photo of him and Coria when they were about 10-12 years old. Coria has long hair parted in the middle and looks just like a little girl.

They covered the 2 courts being built in his town and he said that he was very angry as a 5 year old that none of the 40 year olds would waste their time playing with him.

Chris asked him about Rally racing and he said that he remembers watching a Rally race before he remembers picking up a tennis racket. He talked about riding with Peter Solberg and Carlos Sainz. Chris asked if he would rather be a Rally driver than a tennis player and David said, ďNo, that right now he was glad to be playing tennis.Ē

They talked about playing Roger and various other people. He discussed how you plan with your coach about how to play someone, but when you got out on the court that you might throw the plan out depending on how you and the opponent were playing. He talked about focusing on his physical development so that he could run and play 5 set matches and feel he was in good shape.

They talked about Junior tennis (Orange Bowl, Wimbledon, etc) and David had an interesting reaction. He got an almost wistful far away look in his eyes and said that what he had really enjoyed was playing at about the age of 12-14 in a type of competition that pitted various states against each other in Argentina, almost like a mini-Davis Cup, but within the county. It sounded like the step up to the international Junior circuit was a whole different level of expectations.

Chris asked him about the pressure of playing and at first David misunderstood him and laughingly replied that he was just a tennis player and that wasnít any big thing. I really liked this because I took it to mean that he knew he wasnít a surgeon or something where people depended on him for their lives, that he was just lucky enough to play sport for a living. When they talked about tournament pressure David mentioned how nervous he was at Wimbledon but seeing how poorly some of the other guys were playing made him feel better.
Chris asked about the bad part of being famous and David said it was the loss of privacy. He smiled and said that he had to watch what you did because people were going to find out about it. Being in California the only reason I know about the whole Zamalo craziness and also the reaction to his not playing in the Olympics is because of reading these newsgroups but Iím sure that was the type of thing he was alluding to.

Chris asked what other kinds of things he liked to do away from tennis and he mentioned fishing. He was in the Bahamas deep sea fishing before coming to New York for the Open. He caught Yellowtail, Grouper and Snapper. The biggest fish he ever caught was a shark!

Chris asked him what he saw for 2005, David replied that if he didnít have injuries he would expect to end the year in the top 3!! Chris was a little surprised by that response and asked him to repeat that.  David felt that since he was an all surface player that he could pick up points throughout the year and not just during one or two parts of the season.

Thatís all I can remember of the interview except that he seemed very relaxed and pleasant, smiling and laughing during a lot of the questions.

Hope you all found this interesting, since I know that not many people get the Tennis Channel and have a chance to see the programs.

Thanks, thanks soooooooo much for this great and interesting interview!!!! khyber  :worship:

I was struck by what great teeth this kid has. I donít know if he had braces, or veneers, or is just one of those people blessed with white, straight teeth.
i discovered it already  he has perfect teeth, like the models of dentists! i always admire his teeth when he smiles, especially compared with Chela's teeth :tape: and also here's the same doubt as you, braces or veneers once?

he said that he was very angry as a 5 year old that none of the 40 year olds would waste their time playing with him.
Those mid-aged men just don't want to be embrassed if they could lose to a 5 year old tennis baby.

so it's true that he likes fishing. i used to doubt it a lot, because he is a man fit for some exciting activity, like rally or bumgee, but fish is such a quiet one, and needs a lot of patience. But anyway, at least the big shark already surprised me, even doing fishing, he is also different from other ones.

That is what exactly what i want to hear: a confident player even after tough injured year :). As this interview was donce in this year US Open, he should be more confident after achieving 2 finalists in later days. Good luck to him, and i believe he can reach this goal!

Many thanks again for this interview, khyber!! i quite enjoy it!!

Yes - thanks khyber. I was going to copy it over here from the report you wrote on the Yahoo Group - but seems you beat me to it! :) I think this sounds like a great interview, and can only hope that one day it is repeated on Eurosport or the ATP Show, or anywhere I can see it :p Thanks so much again for your time and trouble.

Thank you so much for this interview!!! It's a great idea from the Tennis Channel to do this because most tennis fans don't know how the non-americans really are.

I remember him telling this story in an interview in Argentina as well, I think he loved those years! If I remember correctly he played with Coria...

For anyone who has the Tennis Channel- they will be repeating his interview at 7 eastern time on Jan 23. In the forum for the tennis channel someone commented on that they were not a fan of David before the interview, but were so surprised at how bright, nice and humble he that they didn't want the interview to end.

I would offer to tape the interview- but our VCR is broken and our Tivo does not record onto DVDs. (We need the newer model!)

Here in hick-ville, we don't get the Tennis Channel; we have to call our cable company to subscribe to this service (do I sound canned, by the way?).
