Your favourite's 2004

OK, now that the season is pretty much over, time to look back over your favourite player's best and worst performance in 2004. Try to choose only one player and one each of his best/worst! That will make it a bit trickier if you're a Fed fan :D If you're a fan of several players, just choose one.

Schüttler best (not exactly spoilt for choice :( ): a close tie between the Olympic final and Monte Carlo. I'm going for Athens because winning a medal was his main target for the year and because it's only once every four years, while a TMS final is possible 9 times in a season. Despite the result, it was a great match, even if the tension was killing me
Worst: US Open R1, losing to Seppi despite being 2-0 up in sets and serving with 2 MPs. Beyond bad and pretty much symptomatic of his year

:sobbing: :tears: *sigh* :) He has a olympic silver medal :yeah:

Kiwi's best: totally rocking ToJo in the 2nd and 3rd set in the third round match of the US Open... when did ToJo last lose two sets in one match 6-0 6-1?! .... :rolls: Holy shit, that was damn strong, dominated him all over the court, I've watched is many times since then. ToJo didn't know anymore what's happening with him ;) Definitely much stronger than his win over Safin which was also great, though.
(also worth mentioning: all the doubles matches that brought Kiwi and Rainer to the Olympic doubles finals)

Kiwi's worst: losing to TJ at Wimbledon after the 2nd rain delay and after being up 2-0 sets and and a break in the third set. The 3rd, 4th and 5th set were 6-4 6-3 6-0 in favour of Johansson :smash: :o :o That reminded me of the Kiwi in the last years, totally useless. He as normally a great grasscourt player could have done demage in Wimbledon.
(2nd choice: losing to Ulihrach 2-6 1-6 in Doha 1st round at the beginning of the year :banghead: :banghead: )

OK - my choices for David would be:-

Best: Beating Guga at Roland Garros this year - closely followed by him beating Marat in the same tournament.

Worst: Losing in straight sets to David Ferrer in the first round of Hamburg, - not only an abysmal performance but one of the coldest and most unpleasant days I have ever watched a live tennis match in

Marats worst: His first round loss at the us open against Thomas Enqvist was the ultimative low hit. Couldnt get ANY worse. Overall the time after the AO until the clay season and after the clay season until us open.

Marats best: His quarterfinal (d Roddick) and semifinal (d Agassi) win at the Australien Open, his back to back masters series indoor titles... there his best matches were Madrid vs Agassi, and Paris vs Hewitt.

Agassi's best: Winning Cincinnati TMS, particularly the semi vs. Roddick.

Andre actually played extremely well in Australia, too, and could have made the final had a couple of points gone differently.

Agassi's worst: umm, his entire clay court season?

a tie between his straight set first round losses to Zimonjic in St. Poelten, and to Haehnel in Roland Garros.

Alex's Best: This is tough. The match he played against James Blake to get to his first non-Challenger QF in Newport. His entire week in Calabasas. Getting revenge on Karol Kucera in Prague to get to the SFs. And his match against Delgado in Burbank (not enough words to describe what watching this match was like)

Alex's Worst: This is also tough because Alex rarely plays a bad match. I can think of two disappointing ones. His SF in Prague (after beating Kucera he lost to a WC). The other one was his first round quallie match at Wimby where he put forth very little effort in the 3rd set.

Hard to say for mantilla as i didnt see many of his matches so i will say gaudio

Best - Hewitt qf french open - Gaudio had two tight matches with lleyton in the past month or so leading upto RG. He totally destroyed lleyton and have him a claycourt lesson, and really dominated lleyton with his backhand.

hmmm worst = Probably his match against hewitt in the masters cup. I havent seen many of his other bad losses so hard to say

Marat Safin

best:I have to say it would be the Paris Masters title just seeing him lifting that trophey it was so touching.

worst:3 losses to Roddick(which in my opinion is not as good as Marat)

Calleri -

Best = His total smashing of baldy in miami, the first set was amazing and i think it has to be a nomination for one of the best single person performances of the year (during the first set)

worst - either of his two straight set losses in the davis cup. to voltchkov and El Aarej

This is difficult. But, MARAT

Best:

Win - The whole AO '04 run.

Performance - TMC match v. Roger. Good exclamation point for the year and momentum for 2005.

Worst: First round USO loss. I thought he was returning to The Dark Side and would never reemerge.

I'm so glad I was wrong. :D

Go Marat! :D :D

JC Ferrero

best: getting to AO semis. (hopefully i'll be able to add davis cup winner to this in a couple of weeks ;) )

worst: pretty much the rest of the year. losing to corretja 1st round monte carlo, horna 2nd round Madrid & to andreev 2nd round RG were particulary bad.

Nice thread idea Cowgirl. :yeah:

Roger's best - oh, gee, which one do I pick? Defending his Wimby title over a red-hot Roddick? Nonchalantly breaking a couple dozen records this year? Personally, I think the best thing he did was manage to wrangle a years' supply (or is it lifetime supply?) of Toblerone out of his country. Yum. ;)

Roger's worst - Yes, even the great Roger has an off-day, and in my opinion it happened at the Olympics where he lost to Berdych. Eh Roger? :retard:

corias best:

Tanking at Wimbledon was almost as bad as USO. At least at the USO he didn't lose to a nobody.

You're right. Well he never liked Wimbeldon so that might be an excuse but he likes USO, and it's his best surface. But well maybe that was not by far the worst. ;) (I didn't see Wimby btw.)

This required some thinking for me...

Jan-Michael
Best that I saw: beating Wayne Ferreira at San Jose after three close losses to him previously. That match was a thing of beauty, he played so well, kept his head, came back from a set down, served like a demon, never got down on himself. I wish I had it on tape, but I will never forget that match.
Best that I heard about: Max Mirnyi in the first round at Wimbledon, only 4 unforced errors in 3 sets, Graydon, Travis, Patrick Stewart and a few other die hard fans I know in the stands and again he played like a man possessed.
Worst match: so many to choose from, my big biscuit had a less than stellar year... I'll go with losing to Stefan Koubek in the Madrid Qualies which prevented him from defending his QF points from last year's Madrid. He lost 85 points and about 14 places in the entry system which may keep him out of Indian Wells next year. I still don't know what happened in that match because he refuses to talk about it.

Graydon Oliver
Worst 'match': wasn't a match, it was the day he learned that he would be suspended for two months for something that was not his fault (which the ATP acknowledged and gave him a 'lighter' punishment).
Best match: well it was great that he and Travis won the Calabasas Challenger in his first tournament back, and even better when he and Justin won Beijing, but I think the highlight of his year was defeating Federer-Allegro to win the Doubles title in Thailand. That was very cool.

True, but the Open was more disappointing, as he was a former champoin there, unlike Wimbledon.

Best: Boy! Too many. I would pick the USO, though. Because so many ignorant US tennis fans couldn't ignore him any more since.

Worst: Athens Olympics, but Olympic games don't really count in pro tennis, anyway.

Carlos Moya: Rome. That was the whole time I was studying for my AP exams and saying goodbye to my friends after sophomore year, and it was a sad time. And then Carlos cheered it up.

Worst: That ankle rollover. That wrecked him for a while. And wrecked me, I had to root for my second favorite all through the Oz Open.

Hrbaty's best - His run at the start of the year where he won 12 consecutive matches including titles at Adelaide and Auckland, and two rounds at the AO where he played subliminal tennis, but ran out of steam against Grosjean.

Hrbaty's worst - Probably the clay TMS events where he barely won games against Nalbandian and Ferrer.

Agassi's best - Cincinatti, Australian Open
Agassi's worst - St Poelten, Roland Garros

11-22-2004, 02:07 PM
David Nalbandian
Best: Madrid except the final, Vienna including the final though he lost. He played many awesome matches in these two tourneys!

Worst: From my limited TV broadcast, i choose the miserable final of Rome, 3 straight sets lost to Moya

Canas:
Best: All Shanghai matches!! :clap2: plus AO beat Henman in 5 sets

Worst: RG lost the first round to Gaudio

Jonas Björkman
Best: Winning the doubles title in Wimbledon for the third time in a row. :) :rocker:
Worst: Losing in straight sets to Sargsian at Australian Open. :(

Ditto to all of this! OMG You're lucky you went to the Aus Open before this one Bjorki! You didn't have to witness Sargis slaughtering Jonas  I'm so glad I watched all of Popp vs Joachim instead of leaving halfway to go to that horrible match :(

My other highlight for the year for Jonas would be sealing victory for the Swedes against Australia in February :woohoo:

Marat Safin:

The best:

• Without doubts, his excellent acting in the Australian Open, with convincing wins over Andy Roddick and André Agassi.
• His join to Peter that began to give their fruits at the end of season, winning his first ATP titles since 2002 in China, and later two TMS events in Madrid and Paris.
• The Hippo’s quote, after his losing in Toronto TMS.

The worst:

• That not very brilliant idea of play a tournament in Poland on clay before the Olympic games, during the summer hard-court season.
• His awful lost to the Swedish Tomas Enqvist in the USO 1st round.
• That long match against Potito Starace. After this match, He had to play to David Nalbandian with the hands destroyed.

Gustavo Kuerten:

The best:

• His win against Roger in RG.

The worst:

• Too many defeats by his injury.
• His awful match against Kristian Pless in the USO.

Carlos Moyá:

The best:
• His TMS title in Rome

The worst:
• His awful match against PHM in Davis Cup.

Roger Federer:

The best:

• Without doubts, his unquestionable world # 1 winning 11 titles (including 3 GS, 3 TMS, and his 2nd TMC in row) , being the first player after Mats Wilander to wins three GS events in the same season (AO, Wimbledon, and USO), equaling the Björn Borg’s record to win straight titles on three different surfaces ( Halle & Wimbledon: on grass, Gstaad: on clay, and Toronto TMS: on ), and being the 1st player to win Wimbledon and the USO in same year after Pete Sampras did.
• The one has been unbeaten after his last lost to Tomas Berdych in Athens, and also in his last 13 ATP final.

The worst:
• His lost to Hrbaty in Cincinnati TMS.

André Agassi:

The best:
• To be among the best 8 players in the world, being 34 years old.
• His title in Cincinnati TMS, with convenient winnings over Tomas Johansson, Carlos Moyá, Andy Roddick and Leyton Hewitt.

The worst:
• His bad performance at RG and Queens losing in 1st round of both events.

Nicolas Kiefer:

The best:
• His great come back to the ATP tour, after many too many injuries since his best year (1999).

The worst:

• His wrong acting in finals with straight losing to Joachim Johansson, Vincent Spadea, Tommy Haas and Andy Roddick. (I'm not sure about the order)

Well, I have more favourites...., I’ll write about them asap.

PS: I've a better post in the "Español" forum, since I don't write in English so well.
