Martin to coach Fish?

Unconfirmed reports out of Florida say that Todd Martin will be announced as the coach of Mardy Fish. An announcement could come before Thanksgiving with the two getting ready in December for the Australian circuit.

That's interesting... I figured Todd would want to spend time @ home for the first time in 20+ years, perhaps he can help Mardy reach his full potential.

I don't know about this. This could be good or bad. Martin is a gritty guy with the same style of play, but he had the same problem of making matches too hard then they should have been. Who knows, maybe he will finally get Mardy to work hard on his fitness.

Hmmm... I hope Fish would have a better year next year though!!! :bounce:

omg that would be WONDERFUL!!!!!!! I've said for the longest time that Mardy needed to get rid of Kelly... this could be the shot in the arm he needs!

Well, whatever mental breakdowns Todd may or may not have had during matches in his career, at least he obviously understood the importance of PHYSICAL FITNESS! So, that could be a good thing for Mardy. I am also a little bit surprised to see this since I'm sure the travel was getting to Todd and his family, but maybe Todd is willing to do it if he doesn't have to play the matches.

Its a bit suprising he would start coaching so soon after retiring.

I'm thrilled to death that Mardy will finally be getting rid of Kelly but I don't know how Martin will be as a coach? Is he capable of kicking Mardy's ass and isn't afraid to piss Mardy off? Because that's exactly what Mardy needs, is someone to push him hard.

Wow. Martin just retired and now hes coaching allegidly? Thats intresting because I too would think that he would want some time off to spend with his family. But hey - if he helps woop Fish into a better player, I'm all for that. :)

Wow, this is really interesting! Thanks for posting it, TC. Martin certainly has a good mind for the game, and that can't hurt :p

This should be good for Fish. Fish's game is good enough for him to attack the net, but also play from the baseline. Martin will be hard pressed to make Fish think out there a bit more and become a more attacking net player. Wish them all the best of luck if this actually does happe.:yeah:

That's very interesting...... particularly with Todd saying he hated to spend time away from his family when he was talking about why he was retiring from the tour.

Anyway, anyone who works with Todd is fortunate in my book. He seems to be a great guy..... intelligent and insightful.

Todd's mental breakdowns stopped occuring afer he sought the help of a psychologist. no doubt he has learnt a thing or three about the mental aspects of tennis that he could pass on to the Fish.

todd would be a great coach for mardy, imo, but i wouldnt have thought he would go right into coaching after retiring and wanting to spend more time with his family

maybe it is only a temporary sort of thing, you never know but Mardy did need a new coach to help him out cos he needs someone new. He and his other coach Kelly had a hard time figuring out what was wrong with Mardy's game and all. He just a new fresh face and perhaps that will motivate him and make him want to work harder.

If this is all true, then the chances of me liking Mardy have doubled...at least!

Thanks for the heads up, tennischick. :)

I hope it's true. Good luck to Mardy in 2005. You've got the goods.

 I like Todd, he was a great player but choker+choker <> GS titles. Who knows, maybe Martin is better as a coach

Mardy has to get physically fit, IMO, before he can worry about his mental strength. And his physical fitness (as I have seen in person :o) is a REAL problem. He's made improvements this year but he's still got a long way to go. THEN I think maybe he could get a sports psychologist to help with the other stuff. Even if Todd doesn't help him that much, he can't be worse than Kelly. I watched a couple of their practices earlier this year, and it was a joke. He had to bag Kelly, as nice as he seemed to be and as much as he seemed to care about Mardy. Just the fact that Mardy has realized he needs a change is great news!

They both played a similar game too (Martin was more of a serve and volley player, though) so that experience with that gamestyle, may also be good for Fish. It will be interesting to see whether Fish will improve, but I did think he needed a coaching change. That Kelly never seemed to be very good.
