The both pulled out along with Duckworth.

The both pulled out along with Duckworth.

Wise men - all three of them along with Millman.
Five sets - in mid December - ludicrous.

Ball, Gooch, Duckie and Millman will be fresh and ready for January action.

Gooch needs some singles wins so I think he should have played

 There's 2 weeks between the playoff and the Aussie summer of events, if they are tired because of that, they don't deserve to be playing.

suprising that gooch has apparently pulled out yet he was at awards tonight

You really don't understand tennis - preparation, peaking, rest time and training.:rolleyes:

:haha: Looks like you don't understand tennis yourself. Yes, just because they will be replacing some training with matchplay means it will stuff up their preparation and make them tired for the Aussie tournaments. I think playing 5 setters will help them get prepared for long tough matches.

You are too funny. I'll make sure I will come to you for any tennis related advice in the future because you are a master at explaining your point of view.

I think both of you make valid points.

The jones meltdown proves our guys need more practice playing that format leading into January... but..... Im not sold on the idea of all matches at the WC being 5 sets... perhaps semis and finals would have been enough...

Every player is different, great to see Millman concentrating on some rest and a decent training block...while for others the more matches they can get here the better...

Moving on, shall be interesting to see who makes the final spots that are available...

I wonder why Bolt and Duckworth are playing Hong Kong futures and not the playoffs

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I wonder if Duckworth does not feel he is ready for 5 set matches at this point. As for Bolt I have no idea why he was not selected? Obviously not a TA favourite.....interesting that Brydan Klein has made yet another Futures final. This time in Indonesia and won the doubles with Propoggia. I wonder if TA will ever forgive him? As for Jason Kubler I have no idea. Some very odd omissions from the men's field for sure.

Berman is also in Hong Kong, but who knows if he is American/Australian/New Zealander/South African. i think he played in one of the playoffs a few years ago though? maybe Duckworth just wanted to score some points for his ranking since he hasn't played for a while, and you'd think he's a good chance for a wildcard in January anyway...

RustyOz

Duckworth has just come of injury - surgery of some sort and was deemed by TA not to be fit enough for 5 sets. Why they sent him to Indonesia is anyones guess.

Kubler's knees wouldn't be able to handle 5 sets on a hard court....they are still that bad!

Bolt is still a mystery....he's a great kid and i thought was part of the ta system...

Klein - Not sure, bridge has probably been burnt for good there....im sure if he did something impressive he would be in contention but is clearly still on the outer....better for Brydan to be doing it this way anyway....the hard work is coming together, hopefully he can do some damage over summer...

The berman situation is extremely complicated from what i have heard with one country i think requesting funding be repaid before he was released to australia....think it was the us but not 100% on that...

Hong Kong - good move to get some matches under his belt before the summer events now I know that he has been injured...

Meanwhile at the playoff, top half is wide open now....I would so love to see Adam Feeney come through there and win this!!

Hi, I only follow tennis during the Australian summer. But excuse me if I seem to be stating the obvious, but this seems to be one of the weakest fields for the WC playoff in like....ever

The semi-finals are Barton v Mitchell and Smith v Saville or Reid (currently in 1st set tiebreaker).

Reid wins in straights. Hopfully JP takes this out.

RustyOz

Pity JP has to play Reid, just like it was a pity he had to play Jones so early (that shoulda been the final imo).
Barring injury, JP should take this out.
Go the Jipper

Sam21

a bit of an upset in the first semi with Reid beating JP in four sets, something like 6-3 6-4 4-6 6-3. and then the massive, five hour five setter with Barton and Mitchell, ending up 6-3 7-6 6-7 3-6 9-7 to Ben. Barton struggled at the end of the second and start of the third with a line call against him on his set point at 6-5, losing the tiebreak and then going down 3-0 in the thrid, so he did well to turn it around from there. and then the big celebration from Mitchell at the end, he was pumped!

i'll be going for Mitchell tomorrow in the final, hopefully he recovers well and is able to back it up tomorrow. anyway a good test of his fitness today at least, he proved he can go all the way into the fifth.

Chris.

Reid has to win the playoff, cause they won't give him a WC. Whereas I see Mitchell getting one if he loses.

Well played Ben. Well done.
I must say I was hoping Reid would win for the very reason AJ stated above.
I hope Reid does get the final AO WC for his efforts this year and at the play-off.

I'd wait to see what everyone does in week one of the tour, and go solely off those efforts for the remaining WCs.

This is my call for the WC

Mitchell, Saville, JP Smith, Duckworth and Kyrgios.

I'd put the next best ranked Aussie, after Ebden, into the mix - Millman.

So Mitchell (won the WC), Millman, Duckworth, Saville and Smith.
Kyrgios in the Qualies.

Smith or Saville may get bumped if someone, like Gooch, Groth, Ball, Jones has an amazing run in Brisbane.

That's my pick.

It's politics they will be very unlikely to give Millman one though he deserves it. That was the reason I said those names not because that's who I think should get one.

If I had my way Millman and Reid would, but I don't.

If Kyrgois gets one then what was the point of having them play 5 sets at the WC playoff. Clearly, he isn't quite able to play 5 sets at the moment. No doubt he is looking like a bright prospect but WC, no. I would replace him with Millman out of AJ's selections and if those 4 got selected, I would be happy.

Smith - Had a solid year on the challenger tour
Millman - also, has slugged it out on the challenger tour and ha simproved hsi ranking into the top 200
Duckworth - Battled injuries but was the star of the last summer and all things cosnidered he had an alright season after that. I think there is no question he'll get one.
Saville - Time to give him a go in the seniors.

This is my call for the WC

Mitchell, Saville, JP Smith, Duckworth and Kyrgios.

I've got an inkling about him as well but didn't want to say it first given I'm driving his bandwagon.

To aussie fan, Kyrgios lost his 11th match in 9 days in a 5th set after beating the number one seed in round one. Given how much he played I think he deserves an exemption from such fitness statements.
