what a great draw. Even if he is rusty and somehow loses to Hewitt I very much doubt he will lose to either Moya or Gaudio.

Federer has been grouped with Carlos Moya (4-0), Gaston Gaudio (3-0) and Lleyton Hewitt (6-7). Despite trailing the Aussie in career meetings, Federer has won their four meetings this year.

Should be an interesting first match for both... I'd like Rogi to win his opening match, same w Carlos! Gaston can beat Lleyton...

For all the people laughing at Gaudio, it would be fantastic if he won, but more so if he beats Hewitt.

Have so many people got short memories and forgot that Gaudio when they played in Montreal tied Federer in knots with his backhand, but the lack of nerve cost him badly in that match.

It's not like Gaudio has always been the bastion of consistency either. It's the best time for Gaston to play Federer as he is cold from his little break, then again it could work out well for Roger and freshen him up.

I expect Roger to win, but the main way it will be a walkover if Gaudio is frighteningly nervous, which he shouldn't be at this event.

I have also seen Draper dominate Federer in Cincinatti, a match Scott should have easily won but chocked in the end
.
I wouldn't be upset at all if Federer lost to Gaudio and would be very pleased for Gaston but I would still be shocked if he managed a win on this surface.

Federer has never blitzed Gaudio in any of their matches, so it's not going to be a walk in the park, just cause he is Roger.

Yes, I expect Federer to win, but the big advantage Gaudio has is that he is meeting him first and not last in the group stages.

Surely you are not the only one. Gaudio really causes much trouble to Roger with his backhand in their previous meetings, and this time it will be no exception, though I believe Roger will top him finally.

Yes Mrs. B, the one thing that impressed me the most about Rogi was they way he utilized the dropshot. The way some of the points were played it was almost as if they were playing on clay. But good for Roger to hold his nerve the way he did, I was afraid all those squandered opportunities might start to unsettle him. I don't even want to think what might have happened had Gaudio won the 2nd set. :scared:

Roger played well. Backhands and volleys were terrific, some easy UE from the forehand side but after such a long break he was in pretty good form.

Lots of break points missed but that was mainly due to Gaudio raising his game during those points.

The match reminded me of the Hrbaty match in Cincy but this time thankfully roger held on.

Mrs. B, you are being a little bit demanding ;) You see, you mentioned the bachhand down the line (:eek:better than Gaudio), the half volley( when the hell he got back his volley like that), the touch (he always has it and showed much today:D), and even the drop shot(:eek: no words), not to mention his forehand...

As I have said to WyveN before, he knows how much I enjoy the play of these two guys and enjoy their matches, though I am not always keen on the results. :)

Well what I can I say about this match, except that considering that Roger hasn't played for a while and Gaston hasn't had much tennis it was quite a good match.

Gaston in the 1st set looked very overawed and was nervous and made too many errors and can't do that against the player who is clearly the best in the world. Roger was hitting some very good shots and he was keeping Gaston off balance.

The second set was very entertaining and I am happy that Gaston showed courage in fighting off all those break points, and there was some very nice moments in the match, in the first set when Gaston hit the passing shot, and Federer makes the volley, Gaston hits a good lob and then Federer hits the smash with the frame and it ends up being a back spinning winner and then when they crossed at the change of ends, they hit hands in a friendly gesture.

Sure Roger's break point conversion rate wasn't great, but Gaudio did lift his game numerous time and there were some great angles, and strategy shown and no brainless tennis out there, which made me appreciate it more.

Hats off to Roger, he continues his undefeated record and will only improve from here and that is only bad news for his future opponents and hopefully Gaston can build on that second set performance.

George, I was wondering what your thoughts were on the match today! Yes, Gaston did seem a bit nervous in the 1st set but really took it to Rogi in the 2nd, as he often does -- this time, Rogi managed to win it in straights! Rogi's main prob was the low break-point conversion. I'm glad Gaston made Rogi work cos this is the perfect way to get into the tourney -- he'll need such matchplay when he faces Hewitt.

I do hope Gaston can beat Hewitt -- it w be nice for him to win a match. I have no idea who will win betw him and Carlos tho. Carlos really just needs to win one match also, then he can go to Spain for the priority -- DC FINAL v. USA!

Nice gesture of friendly rivalry and respect betw two nice, talented guys!! When they returned to the court after the rain delay, they seemed to be happily chatting! Sweet boys! I love them both!

It's too bad one had to lose tho... when they're both on, it's artistry and creativity on the court -- so satisfying and delightful!

Now if only Carlos can beat Lleyton tonight...

Great start, Rogi! Keep going ALL THE WAY, sweet one! And his hair didn't bother him too much either... good!

interesting that Rogi used the dropshot [to great effect] cos he considers it a sneaky shot [which Guille uses all the time, esp v. claycourters -- sneaky guy that he is!].

It proves that Rogi has a lot of court sense and he used it at the right time. Of course there is a lot of respect between them and it was plain to see. I highly doubt he would have had that bi play with Coria for example.

Yes, actually, I was thinking that the slower court and heavy conditions w favour guys like Gaston and Guille, not so much Rogi, for ex. If Carlos and Lleyton ever get started, I sure hope Carlos can do some damage -- he has done in the past [Cincy] so why not in Houston?

As long as Gaudio cuts the errors out, then he can cause some problems, but as for the court speed effecting Roger well he showed that he can adjust and handled himself quite well after his break, and I said earlier I see him only getting better in this tournament.

Moya is a classy guy and a gentleman, just like Roger and it makes a change, that the # 1 player isn't a total stuck up arsehole who happens to play great tennis.

But I hope Gaston can win the next time they play, or he has to go into my dreaded realm, the pidegon.

Want to talk lack of self belief and freezing at the big moment, you must not have seen Hamburg then? What a brutal draw Rogi had in Hamburg this year, I mean Gaudio in the 1st round on clay is not one of the best things to see, then he beat Nico Lapentti, Gonzo, Moya, Hewitt (easiest match
:) ) and the weasel in the final.

The last 2 sets in that match were very enjoyable and good quality until the ending.

Yes, true, and he only needs one more win to tie the series at 7-7. And to think that he trailed the series 2-7 prior to this year, and he's only a couple of wins from taking the lead, is pretty remarkable.

This was a bit like Lendl who used to have a poor initial record against Connors, then came back and won 14 in a row. That would be good if Rogi could win 14 in a row against Hewitt and Duck.

My God, would I be in shock if he did that!! Of course, unlike Lendl-Connors, Federer never trailed Roddick, but at one point he did trail Hewitt pretty significantly. Just for fun, if he did win 14 in a row, his records would be: 16-7 vs Hewitt  and 18-1 vs. Duck!! :tape: :haha: That would be too funny, though I guess Roger should look toward Lendl for inspiration.

I finally get to watch the match vs Gaudio! Just totally enjoyable. I thought Rogi will be rusty like he always does in early rounds esp with the long break but his bh was working really well and those volleys...and the dropshots  Wasn't it just not long ago he said he's never confident in doing dropshots? ;)

and Gaudio...one reason why I wasn't nervous at all for this match is coz I really like Gaudio. So good to see him keeping the match tight in second sets and he made some amazing shots with fantastic angles, wowed the crowd too ;) Who said he can't play on hardcourt? Many good rallies between the two with some funny ending, especially that "mishit smash" of Rogi :haha: and he cheekily laughed at it, Gaudio thought that was funny too.

I'm so cheering for Gaudio and Rogi for today's match, wouldn't it be just perfect if they can both make it to the sf? :)

I remember he did a TV interview right after beating Roddick in the final. When it started he was in a chair leaning forward, and his hair was kind of flopped in his face. I don't know why, I thought that was so sexy. I guess I just prefer longer hair on (most) guys.

I just didn't like the way he had to grease and bobby pin it in order to play. I think his one length, long hair is simplest for playing, which might be why he grew it out in the first place. Does anyone think he'll ever grow it long again? I don't. I think the ponytail's gone for good.

No, Gaston gave him a better fight than Hewitt did, and that's not bad for someone who is meant to be a disgrace at this event.

I am used to stupid people, if you know what I mean read the Safin d Coria page on GM to find out. :)

There are lots of people on here that I like and respect, but there are just as many who have less than nothing in their heads and can't back up their views.

Yes, thank god for rain delays that Rogi/Gaudio match was good fun, more so in the 2nd set, the dropshots and the defensive play and the fact that they used angles.

George, hi there! Yes, Gaston is more talented than Lleyt and that's why the match is so much more challenging and interesting for Rogi -- two great talents -- and cute too! Nice prep for Rogi if he ever plays him on clay -- learn some clay tactics!!

Smart Guille practises w Rogi [no doubt to learn sth off him... as he does w AA]...

I won't see Rogi/Carlos tonight... I hate this schedule.

Interesting summary, but there might be some truth in that. Well GG gave Rogi more than enough to think about in Hamburg, though I wish Gaudio could learn some self-belief from Rogi. They can play on clay all through the clay season and it won't get boring. At least Rogi is playing Monte Carlo next season.

Smart Guille practises w Rogi [no doubt to learn sth off him... as he does w AA]...

Even tho Rogi finally won this tough match, he did have the trainer out -- I knew there was sth wrong... he better rest up and get treatment before the SF on Sat.

Poor Rogi... fine time for Charly to step it up -- so unlike him but he's done not badly getting a set off Rogi... now if only Guille can do the same v. Pandy.

Lleyton's match v. Gaston will be crucial cos if he loses, Carlos will be 2nd in the red grp behind Rogi.

So... it was a trying match tonight... poor baby! Hope this injury doesn't hurt him for 2 more crucial matches...

Honestly I was actually thinking the same after watching the Hewitt match again last night. He did look really tired and almost out of breath at times after the match. Nowhere near the "no sweat" Rogi we know, so I was a bit worried.

But I think it's probably normal as he had been out for quite sometime? I'm glad he managed to pull off a win, showed that he did want to win each time on court and not slack off just because he already qualified. Only fair I think.

Nice interview

http://www.masters-cup.com/news/2004/federer_interview4.asp

Q. Was your ankle a concern today?

FEDERER: No, it was just the tape that started moving, so I don't want it to move in the wrong place and then I start moving differently just because the tape is in the way. I just rather took it off.

But I do that before every match, so that's nothing you should be concerned about.

===================================
I'm glad to hear that. Yes, he should go out on fire in next match, well I hope so.

Seems like he and Moya really like each other a lot :

===================================

From Rogi :
So, yeah, I thought he felt the pressure quite a bit today. It's hard for him playing against me, you know, who's got nothing to play for really and him, he needs to win so badly.

So I had the feeling he, you know, the way he was acting on the court, you know, being sometimes very disappointed, very sad sometimes in his game and his shot selection, so it's hard for him because, you know, I like him very much. It was not so easy to play today.

From Moya :

Q. Does he intimidate other players? You're old enough, you can go back to the days when Sampras was at his peak. Does he intimidate opponents in the same way Sampras did?

MOYA: Well, I think maybe not as much as Sampras , Agassi , Becker , Edberg . But maybe it's because I was much younger than them.

Now, I see things different. He's much younger than me. Also, that he talks to all the players, he's very nice guy. I'm not saying that the others are not nice, but they are different - they go, they do their own thing and that's it. Roger is a guy that you can talk to him and he talks to you, he says "hi" every day. So that makes him not as intimidating like maybe the other guys.

=======================================

Didn't get to watch this match, but sounds like Moya played really well, fought hard and could have won. Hopefully Gaudio can do the same vs Hewitt today, but with different results.

He does seem to play exceptionally well back home, and fought harder there. I definitely notice the difference. But then at least he doesn't disappoint his home fans unlike others who seem to crumble under pressures at home ;)

I actually didn't see Jim much past few matches and no more clown waving cardboards for Andre (maybe coz he's not there), so that's good. As long as he can pull off a speech congratulating a non-american (assuming will be) with a less sour and bitter face, that'll be good enough.
