Finally some credit to Guillermo Canas

Canas = Desire
by Jeff Tarango

Code named Desire

This guy has heart!!

Guillermo Canas

Trying. . .
We'll say.

This professional is all that.

Why is he charismatic because his professionalism, his out court behaviour, his practice regime, his diet, his work ethic, his amiable presence are all poster cards for how it should be done in today's sports.

Guillermo Canas has one speed, get to everything and hit every shot appropriately. If he should hit it hard he hits it hard with emphasis. If the shot requires finesse, he tries it, he might not always make it, but when he misses he shows he cares.

He always cares, he always give 110%, otherwise he doesn't come to the event.

Watch this player on TV whenever the powers that be give you a chance. . .and record it.

His technique on the forehand is not perfect, so he may always have wrist problems, but when he is fit and ready, ATP Tennis, watch out.

Guillermo Canas will be a winner.

Footnote: It looks like Tarango was right, as this was written a while ago and he has reached his highest ranking ever.

Thanks for that little article GWH. In spite of Jeff's antics it's good to see that he appreciates the talent and desire of Willy.

He has had a great 2004, and going to TMC as the alternate, there maybe a big chance that he will play some matches at TMC.

:yeah: Willy and Jeff.

I watched Cañas practice up close at the USO this year. He seems to be in great physical condition and was hitting some remarkable shots. He's always had a lot of potential and hopefully now that he's healthy he can start fulfilling it.

The thing that is underrated about Canas is that he has played well on other surfaces besides clay. He has won on hardcourts, made finals indoors and on grass, and did well on the carpet.

I remember the Hewitt vs Canas matches at the 2001 and 2002 French Open, they were fun matches, as you knew none of them were giving an inch. It will be interesting to see their matches now as they haven't played since 2002.

Thanks for posting that GWH :) As you know, I've been a fan of Canas for a while - he is SUCH a fighter - he never gives up - I have the greatest respect and admiration for him - and he's such a genuine, friendly person as well. I am really pleased that he will get his chance at TMC (even though David had to turn down his alternate's postition for him to go!). I hope Canas gets to play some matches and show the world what a great player he is.

Very astute comment there Jeff, at least he gets some coverage in Argentina.

Thanks for the interview and Canas definitely deserves respect after what he has achieved this year, and for maximising his ability.

Those were good comments by Tarango on Canas, and that's the thing everyone knows when they play him or watch him play, he will always give 100 per cent. I hope he doesn't have any more injury problems.

I am surprised about this Tarango's sharpness ... guess he got it better off the court.
Thanks for the pick up. GWH

I have never read before an inference that Willy's wrist problems, could be due to his FH technique. Interesting approach.

I still believe Willy will reach a new career high after Wimby 05': he has nothing on RG WB 2004 and neither on the 3 clay TMS.

Vamos Willy.

Tarango is actually quite an intelligent and thoughtful guy, he just had a very interesting temperament on court.

Thanks for the article about our soldier, GWH :yeah:
not only on the court, he even give 100% attention on the pracitise, though it spends much time, he definitely enjoy it. He is the one who can transfer those extreme passive shots into the unbelievable winners, never say no to any shot even sometimes they look really impossible to save.
This year is just good coming back ending with an alternate for TMC. Next year? Top 8?

Actually - no! Tarango WAS unbearable on court, but when I met him he was really pleasant and polite, and extremely intelligent and interesting to talk to -a real gentleman too. I was really surprised and I agree with Marc on this one.

Rosie, I have no idea how Tarango was off court, i was always refering to his "on" court demeanor... he was one of the few players thru the years that made me want him to loose.

Maybe it would have been different if I had met him off the court.

Actually - that's exactly how I thought of him until I met him - and I didn't meet him til after he retired! I was very prepared to dislike him and argue with him then we met :p and was very pleasantly surprised when that wasn't the case at all! He was an idiot on court though - I agree!

I have met the guy and have never had a problem with him and he has actually been very helpful to me. He is fine off the court, he just had some white line fever when he went out to play and became "an interesting" character.

Thanks for the article GWH and it was nice to see those kind words from Tarango.

Cañas he mightn't be the most spectacular player, but he is very fun to watch as he just battles for everything and is very good with the fans.

Thanks for the interview GWH and Tarango writes in a unique style and I agree with what he says about Canas.

It would be great if he could make that next step into the top 10.
