Sorry for the somewhat premature thread but, as a Canberra born, I'm excited about Kyrgios.

Born: 27 Apr 1995
Birth place: Canberra, Australia
Plays: Right Handed (Double Handed Backhand)

Probably his biggest achievement to date came in doubles. He won (boys) Roland Garros and Wimbledon with Andrew Harris this year. His singles results have been coming along too, he recently won Canada (Grade 1) and made the quarters of Wimbledon and the US Open. Men's tour experience and results have been limited, but his showings have been respectable.

Already top 5 in juniors, he'll be one of the favourites for this year's u18 national championships and next year's junior Australian Open.

Kyrgios is a genuine shot at becoming the world number one junior in January next year. He's #5 and will be #4 if he wins the title. The top three go off the rankings on January 1st (as they are born 1994) so things are looking good. The equation is complicated by some junior Asian 2011 points coming off soon.

Takes the title with some impressive serving. :D

The boys final was a battle between local favourite Kaichi Uchida, seeded No.2, and Aussie Kyrgios who was looking to win his first Grade A singles title. There was nothing between the two players with the Aussie edging out a tight match 76(5) 76(4).

Kyrgios has enjoyed a lot of success in doubles this year with two doubles Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros at Wimbledon, but a first Grade A victory in singles was important for the Australian who commented after the match:

“I’m overwhelmed by this great achievement. I had to play some solid tennis to beat Uchida, he’s a very solid player. The crowd was really great, making it a good atmosphere. I really enjoyed my stay at Osaka, I played some of my best tennis here.”

Uchida knew going into the match that he had a big challenge on this hands, having lost the only previous singles meeting between the two players at this year’s Junior Wimbledon, as well as five previous doubles matches:

“I have had matches with Nick before, five times in doubles, one time in singles. All matches, I lose. The most risky shot that he has is his serve. The accuracy is quite good so for me it is very difficult to break his service games. The key today was how to hold my service games because his serve, at the important point of games, was very very effective and great. It was very tough match for me.”

Good news.

http://www.tennis.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Krygios-460x306.jpg

Not so good (from yesterday):

Kyrgios has struggled with persistent knee injuries during the event and had both of his knees iced at the end of his match in preparation for tomorrow’s final.
http://www.tennis.com.au/news/2012/12/08/optus-18s-and-14-finalists-decided

Also drew top seed Groth in the 1st round of the wildcard playoff.

n8
12-12-2012, 05:14 AM
The good:
Beats (1) Groth in round one 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3.

The bad:
Loses in round two to (8) Barton 6-7(3) 6-3 3-6 7-6(4) 4-3 retired.

The ugly:
He was up 4-0 40-0 in the 5th set and had to retire due to severe cramping. Over 17 hours on court over 11 matches in the past nine days is too much.

Yeah, brutal schedule for anyone, especially someone who isn't even an adult yet. I'm sad he couldn't close out this one though as I'm pretty sure they all have tomorrow off.

Still, I think his performances since the beginning of June in singles, doubles and juniors might get him a look at a Brisbane qualifying wild card and another chance to impress.

QF d. (7) Montgomery 6-1 6-1

Wouldn't you rather him follow in Tomic's footsteps? Kubler and Saville are both yet to really do anything on the mens tour. I'm hoping Nick can complete the junior grand slam, if he manages a win at the French I think he has a massive opportunity to do it. Come on Nick!

Yes but I mainly mentioned Kubler and Saville to show how well Australia has done in juniors these past few years. Now if he wins the junior Grand Slam he'll be following in the footsteps of Edberg and that sure isn't a bad thing!

Is Nick currently a player that could beat players inside the top 200 week in week out already this year? I'm very worried for a lot of seasoned veteron's that this kid will carve them up, wouldn't be surprised to see him beat Ben Mitchell if Ben of course does win through, amazing potential this kid has.

Pity he did not make it, but good week for Nick anyway, beating some quality players anyway. Will be great following his career.

Interesting to note that Jonesie, who Nick knocked over in the QF, reached the final of the first Challenger he ever played, in Burnie in 2007, having just turned 18 that week.

The G is silent in English because in Greek the G is more of a Y is that makes sense lol. So strictly speaking it should be pronounced kyryios. I think Nick's ranking should jump to around mid to high 500s after this tourney.

I've noticed his composure (at least score wise) too. It's not easy to bounce back after losing such a close set and he did the same thing last week versus Klein. His recent doubles results are a nice bonus, they beat the number one seeds in the first round.

How many points were up for grabs last week and this? What is an f2? I see mention of 15k futures online and 10k

This page (http://www.stevegtennis.com/atp-tennis-ranking-points/) details how many ranking points a player receives for an exit at each round for each level of tournament.

As you will see, 10k Futures are the lowest level of men's ranking point tournament. Kyrgios is currently entered into the level just above that: 15k Futures. You will see in the table that he will receive 8 points for last week's semi-final loss and has guaranteed himself at least another 3 points with his showing this week. Note that Futures points go onto the rankings Monday week after the tournament week (typically 8 days after the final).

China F2 basically means the 2nd Futures event held in China this year. Last week was China F1 and next week will be China F3. See this page (http://www.itftennis.com/home.aspx) for more on Futures, and see all Futures events held this week by clicking on the 'men' tab on the right under 'current ITF tournaments'.

Completely agree. While his success has been staggering this year, Kyrgios needs to apply as little pressure as possible before next year. If he gains too many points this year, next year will be a tough initiation if he has to defend a large number of points.

I believe he'll gain WC's for Brisbane, Sydney, and Aus Open next year with his form this year but we'll wait and see on that.

Can't say I agree.
IMO Nick needs to gain as many points this year whilst he has the opportunity. Not over playing of course, and of course looking after his body.
The more points he wins, the better chance he has of gaining entry into higher ranked tournaments and of being seeded in tournaments.
Get the points whilst he has none to defend, then let the process of training, coaching and tournaments look after the points and ranking next year.

He's just played the last 3 weeks (including 2 doubles). Roland Garros qualifying starts May 21st, then he has Roland Garros juniors and Wimbledon juniors not far from that. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if he plays an event or two between the two junior Slams. I think he's pacing himself well. As Southend Aussies points out, he's already put 1 and 3/4 feet in the door of multiple wild cards in next year's Australian summer of tennis so he won't even need a much higher ranking for those.

There's also a series of events in Asia towards the end of the year, both at ATP and Challenger level, that may be a good option, even if he has to play qualifiers. He's played a bit in Asia in the last six months (also won a Grade A junior event in Japan in October) and could use that experience to his advantage.

Is he getting a WC for RG qualies? Because theirs no way he's in direct...

Can't argue about the scheduling, good solid but not too tough schedule, like the breaks at home for the young kid. As for getting too many points. That might be the most insane thing I have read on this form. If he keeps the hard work and training up hopefully the results will come. Certainly this 3 week stint has been a success in my book.

I wouldn't call it insane, but I am certainly of the opinion that the more points, the better. You're not in a worse position if you defend 40 from 300 than if you defend 0 from 260. But I imagine the concern was overplaying, which is good to avoid for a young and eager player.

Sweet, another semi-final. I don't think he's played a third set tiebreaker in his men's career before so it's great to see him get through it.

He's gone 15-2 since the beginning of the Sydney Challenger. :D

Plays the tournament's number one seed for the 3rd week in a row. It'll be interesting to see how he fares against top 200 Moriya Hiroki.

He got one for Aus Open and as he won junior doubles in France last year, he will be given one.

I doubt the junior doubles means anything for a qualy WC. I'd say the biggest chance will be TA giving him the main draw WC

I'm sorry, but winning junior doubles doesn't mean anything in terms of men's qualifying wild cards the following year. Andrew Harris was Nick's doubles partner last year at Roland Garros, do you think he'll be getting a QWC?

However, given the source, I am strongly inclined to believe this:

he's coming home after this future. He will spend a few days back here with the family, I presume we will be eating a lot of pancakes, waffles, and carby chinese food hahaha then he's off to Melbourne for a weeks prep before RG qualies.

That's what I thought, but xkyrgios's post tells me otherwise. Given Nick's breakout year he may get one from the French. Exciting young players are sometimes given wild cards into international tournaments.

Congrats! :D 18 - as in the amount of slams he'll need to break the current record. A nice number :)

And don't worry, I'm not expecting him to take this record - at least not yet ;)

I was thinking that Nick has a nicely placed birthday. If he was born just 4 days later, he would've missed the cut off under the Canberra school system and would still be doing year 12 right now.

Nick celebrates his birthday by notching his equal highest ranked win (Moriya is currently #192) of his tour career. Funnily enough he beat Stephane Robert in the semi-finals of the Sydney Challenger 7-5 6-3 who was also ranked #192 at the time.

Nick will play Boy Westerhof of the Netherlands in the final, who just beat Chang Yu in the semi-finals 6-2 6-4. Boy is in good form as he, like Nick, only lost to Wu in China F1 and F2.

Top 300 tomorrow when the rankings come out and about 260 the following week. With two challengers in Oz at the end of the year, a top 150 spot is not out of the realms of possibility.

Well, not long after he won Australian Open juniors he said that he would try to win the Junior Grand Slam. But he also said he wanted to reach the top 300 by the end of the year and as his brother points out, he's obviously had to adjust this goal and has set his sights on bigger things.

I wish I could achieve a year goal before May (it usually takes me two years :o), but Kyrgios isn't your average teenager.

I still think it's likely he'll play junior Roland Garros (and Wimbledon) as more experience of the Slam arenas is beneficial.

Southend Aussies

I guess it will all depend on how he goes in the qualy and md for the Grand Slams. If he goes far into the event then he won't play. I hope he plays all juniors and waits until next year.

Excellent result. Well done Nick.
Hopefully that is the last Futures tournament he ever plays.
With a Challenger title under his belt already, Nick should have been playing An-nin this week, where he would have been main draw and could easily have done some major damage there. Now to tackle the bigger tournaments, leave Futures and step up to Challenger level where he deserves to be.
