3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Stepanek. He will play Safin in the final

Great performance :worship: He held his nerve when it counted the most :yeah:

Yes, he does make you forget the year is 2004- very elegant strokes and great hands at the net :yeah:

But of course he's ugly, don't you know.

Woo-hoo sexy Radek, what a performance! That's the way to stick two fingers up to the shallow, looks-obsessed teenybopping contingent on MTF. They made a jokey poll asking who's more attractive, Stepanek or Safin, before their Moscow match - anyone care to repeat that and get the same result, pretty please? I am dreaming of Stepanek's fish-like visage gleaming beneath the metal branches of the Paris trophy...

Like most of the Czech players he has very smooth technique and works the ball around the court nicely, although that forehand is a bit of a disaster in long rallies. He came out a little complacent, I think, Mirnyi connected well with returns and passes and broke him straight away. He only just got through a couple of his service games in the second set, he was getting closer and closer on the Beast's serve without ever getting to breakpoint, then he absolutely raced away with the tiebreak through some great returning. The first and only breakpoint chances he had in the match, he converted at 1-1 in the third, and the final two service holds were very impressive.

I will concede that his manic dance and shout routine after every point won is piss-irritating, but I think it's a nervous reaction to try and release tension and remain focused under pressure.

I like his dancing and jumping around! It's unique!

I was rooting for him during the match today but had to go to bed after the second because I had a wicked migraine. I'm glad to see that he pulled it out.

:woohoo:

(not that I usually root for Stepanek, as a rule, but it's nice to see somebody a little more "random" do well. I commented not too long ago on another board that his year hadn't been that hot)

I think he is going to give Marat a lot of trouble tommorow.

It was funny how unapologetically celebratory Stepanek was at times, what with his pelvic thrusts and weird banshee-like shrieks, which were coming every second point near the end. The French crowd were lapping it up, and threw in some customary hisses and boos like they did against Hewitt, when he was chest-pumping and shouting a bit over-zealously against Monfils. That said, the audience did seem to be really into Stepanek's status as an underdog (in the event as a whole) and were cheering him on to the finishing line. What looked like a boring match on paper proved to be a good bit of fun, with that volleying rally at the net a particular highlight.

Stepanek is definitely fun to watch and his antics are more comical as are the facial expressions, but I will definitely cheering him on in the final as we need another player to join the great list of qualifier TMS winners and also the excuses some of the more rabid Safin fans would come up with, if he manages to lose.
