Sorry I gave everyone a heart attack in the other thread ;)

But what drama the tiebreak was!

Marat was up serving 4-3 with the mini-break when he hit a shot Canas thought was out but was called in. Canas had a fit, was screaming at the line judge. And then Marat double faults to make it 5-4 :banghead: He then proceeded to play a really stupid point and it was 5-5.

Then came an even bigger eruption from Canas- at 5-5, Safin hit a ball that was called long by the linesman but overruled by the umpire Romano Grilloti. Canas was really shitting kittens at that point. They replayed the point, Safin got the mini-break to go up 6-5 and then polished off with a volley winner to take the breaker and the match with it 7-5.

UUUFFFFF!!! I could never be a full-time Marat fan, my nerves just wouldn't be able to take it! I really admire you guys that support Marat through thick and thin.

:haha: That was such a stupid rampage from Canas. The ball was clearly in and Canas literally tried to emulate these two mtf smilies: :retard::timebomb:

Amazing match! Some points were truly great! :yeah:
Congratulations to both players:
To Marat for playing soooo well during the last few weeks, he deserves his second TMS title of the year.
And to Cañas for what he's done this year :worship: From monday he'll be 12th in the Raking.
Well done guys :yeah:

Oh yeah Ron, as my other co-sufferers said - today was peanuts!
One has to be a masochist to be a Marat fan but it's something you just can't get rid of in my opinion!

I see what you mean- he is addictive isn't he? ;)

Unfortunately I have been spoilt rotten by the likes of Sampras and Federer who only occassionally have/had mental lapses, and more often than not deliver/ed in the really big stages.

But Marat has really impressed me this week, and also in Madrid with his ability to focus, put the silliness aside and just get on with the job.

I think John Barret described Marat the best- "A rumbling volcano waiting to explode".

To think that Safin was 90% likely to be packing his bags at 6-7 0-2 30-40 against Ljubicic earlier on in the week... But even though he'll probably be the holder of back-to-back 2004 indoor TMSs by Sunday's end, he really has to prove himself again on the slower surfaces which require him to be more patient. Houston will be his earliest oppurtunity, and next year it would be nice if he didn't fall asleep during the claycourt season, when he really should be excelling in it.

Unlike most people in this thread who seemed to want Safin to close as quickly as he did, I wanted a three-setter but Canas was just under too much pressure on this surface. These guys match up really well, however, and maybe over the five-set format at a grand slam next year they'll produce something special.
