I think Safin is on a roll but I am voting with my heart ... the weird thing is that I love them both. it is so difficult...I want to see Guillermo win another Masters...although I want to see Hippo keep going this way...he is doing so well. Love you too Hippo!!

Hard to say, both are playing great tennis at the moment. But my own personal bias would be to pick Safin.

canas...i wrote him off against lopez yesterday as he couldn't even get a look into lopez's first serve's

however as the match went on he was picking the lefties serves at will, returning with so much ease...if he does that to marat's serve it will be all over

c'mon canas!

I'm badly torn with this one - I love them both. It would be great to see Marat winning another Masters' title in the Paris that he loves so much...........but I would also like Willy to win his second Masters' event after all his terrible injury problems. I hope to enjoy the match and not care who wins :)

Well....stats say otherwise: -

2002 Toronto TMS, Hard Q Canas 7/5 6/3
2001 Cincinnati TMS, Hard R64 Canas 6/3 6/3
1999 St Petersburg, Carpet R32 Safin 6/2 6/3
1998 Ljubljana, CH, Clay, Q Safin 2/6 6/4 6/2

The stats often don't lie but obviously things couldn't be more different at the moment. Canas wins the last two meetings but doesn't play the year after his last win. In great form now as is Marat who was struggling in that period. You can't look in too much at the first result - both players starting out on the tour. Canas has the edge.

Canas to win - Safin is an enigma and is bound to lose it somewhere and Canas is that sort of player that will try his patience to the limit.

jez u bring some good points to the table...

we know canas will run all day if need be, and he exactly the type of player that can frustrate safin. I was expecting that from hewitt yesterday however to be honest hewitt is nowhere near his best at the moment so its up to canas to end safin's paris sojourn

c'mon canas!

Is Hewitt not playing that well? To be honest, Hewitt hasn't really got the game to beat the really powerful and talented top players (before you say anything - Philippoussis is NOT one of them) i.e. Roddick and Safin. I'm not sure what he really lacks but he isn't as effective as a Canas or a Nalbandian (who is very annoying!!!!). Canas definitely has the weapons to break Safin down and even if he loses the first set (which is i think a formality) then if he is playing reasonably well he can break the Safin serve down. When he's not that effective on serve, Safin is considerably weakened.

P.S. I want Canas to win! That would make the battle for year end top 4 VERY interesting! The Masters Cup needs some interesting battle going on!

well my judement of hewitt was based on the highlights I watched of him in tokyo a month ago and the full matches in paris - at his best hewitt is one of the best returners of serve in the world and for whatever reason he just couldn't break down safin.

a classic example was when he had 2 sp in teh 2nd set on safin's serve - hewitt of 2001 & 2002 would have made safin pay. Now why he isn't playing up to that standar, I have no idea. hopefully as a parochial aussie he can find some of that magic of a couple of years ago!

Main problem will be Canas' injury. With a player that relies mainly on running and chasing down everything like Canas, then the sort of injury he is carrying will always cause big problems

Well...sounds like he is OK then - thanks for that. It obviously can;t be too bad if he can come back the next day and beat Haas. In fact, he has beaten two players that certainly have a bit of Safin in them - big serves and powerful groundstrokes and voleys. Come on Willy! :)
