Hey, good idea BG!
I was thinking of starting a basketball thread as well, but wasn''t sure if there was any interest for the sport around here.
Anyway, I think it's quite an open season, without any real favourites. Maybe a chance for dark horses like the Timberwolves or Mavericks to get their first title?
It will be interesting to see what Shaq can bring to Miami, how the Lakers fare with only Bryant and how LeBron James will develop in his second year.
Plus, I'll be keeping close watch to compatriots Dan Gadzuric and Francisco Elson (Bucks and Nuggets, resp)!
May the season be long and exciting! :yeah:

yes it will be a really interesting season...

i think fav for western conference are spurs and eastern have to be the pistons - but as u say there are some potential "dark horses"...i would also add memphis in that category - tehy are a very young team who exceeded expectations last year and will only improve!

Surprise of the season award so far goes to the Utah Jazz.
A team without any big names (Kirilenko is a good baller, but not your typical All Star) is off to a 3-0 start. The Jazz just trashed the Nuggets last night.
I was thinking the rebuilding of the Jazz after Malone left and Stockton stopped would take longer.

Edit: Forgot about Carlos Boozer. Now that's a class forward, proving it with 30 pts (13/19 fgm) and 17 reb last night! :yeah:

I always considered Vince to be an overrated player. He has great athletic abilities, but lacks the ability to make a team play better and I don't see him win any NBA trophies. Tonight he proved me wrong, but the Trail Blazers aren't as strong as they used to be.

The Jazz are indeed off to an amazing start. But the last two victories came against the Nuggets, not exactly a top class contender.
Great defensive effort by Kirilenko, though. He had like 5 blocks and 4 steals.

Wouldn't know about a standout team, I'd still give the T'Wolves the edge this year. Garnett is utterly dominating!

Concerning the Jazz, I rally think they did a good job over the last few years getting rid a bit of this "boring" image they had when they were successful with Stockton, Malone and Hornacek.

They got good results and were one of the top teams, but many people knew and thought: "yawn, that's the Jazz, you just see their boring set play and their solid jumpshots"

I noticed over the last few years that the Jazz were becoming more interesting somehow. Okay, on the other hand, they aren't as successful as they used to be

Damn, did this guy RULE with Shaq together in Orlando. One of the best pointguards of these days. A kind of "new" pointguard and an antecessor that revolutionized this position because he was big, athletic, scorer, dunker, hard to defend because of all those properties.

Then the guy left Orlando and was in nothing but injury troubles with Phoenix. The last seasons, if he played, he was only a joke of himself. He never reached the same level again, far away from what he has been. Awful! How time is passing by, now he is over 30 and is facing his career end :sobbing:

Kings will bounce back. I guess they won't have a very good season compared to the years before, but their offense is just too potent and good and they can score 100+ points virtually every night. A bit of defensive effort and that's good enough to win against most teams.

But with Philly it's different. Offensive is Iverson + a few points from three/four other guys, but nobody so far that you could call a reliable "2nd scorer"

He scored and dished out a good amount of assists, still it wasn't enough and Philly was back 99% of the game.

holy shit, a very very good game from Nowitzki: 41 points (13-13 FTs), 10 rebounds, 4 assists

Uhm, you're right. Haven't considered Malone active. Shaq is correct indeed, so that leaves one more....

I'll be a spoiler and name the second one. It's Reggie Miller, currently on the Pacers injured list.

if Malone was playing, he is close to break Abdul-Jabbar's all-time scoring record!

That's true, he's 1400 points short. That's managable in one season.

Great game by Nowitzki! :worship: He was a new kind of player upon entering the NBA. Tall forward ho has a range on his shot. Add that to a positive attitude and a game that has improved every single season and we might see MVP material any time soon!

Kevin Garnett had a great game as well against the Rockets. 20 points, 17 reb, 9 ast, 3 steals and 1 block. He led his team in ALL categories!

Neely

Neely
11-12-2004, 05:28 AM
Garnett has averaged 5 consecutive 20points/10rebounds/5assists seasons now since 1999/2000. He's tied with Larry Bird.

If he can get 6 times in a row 20/10/5 it's probably a record for all-time that will be hard to break ever.

Purple Rainbow
11-12-2004, 05:38 AM
Garnett can do it more than 6 times. The guy isn't aging yet and there's no sign of decline in his stats.
20 points, 10 rebs, 5 ast is deceptively hard. 20/10 seasons are pretty common, but it's he 5 assists make it the tricky part for the big men, though.

Did you know that Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double over his first 5(!) seasons. Talking about huge feats!!

The Nuggets are trashing the Pistons right now. Detroit isn't close to championship form, but the fact that Ben Wallace is out might help a lot.

yeah, this will probably never change. His fieldgoal percentage is mostly really bad and under 40% or around 40% for a complete season, but the problem in this game was that he also could get hardly to the freethrow line. Sometimes, it's just awful with him if he can't get it going, but at least it seemed that a few teammates hit some shots as he dished out 9 assists.

Punches, drinks fly in brawl that spills into stands

By Mark Montieth

The Indianapolis Star
http://www.dfw.com/images/dfw/startelegram/news/1435818-522866.jpg
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - An all-out brawl erupted near the end of the Indiana Pacers' victory over Detroit on Friday night, one that will result in long-term suspensions and possible arrests for some of the Pacers.

Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson rushed into the stands to confront fans who were drenching the Pacers with beverages with 45.9 seconds left in their 97-82 victory over the Pistons.

Artest did not appear to land punches, but Jackson did. Jermaine O'Neal later struck a fan after he was hit in the head by a chair, as chaos reigned at the Palace.

Artest later punched a fan on the court who rushed at him and tried to land a blow.

Fred Jones, Eddie Gill and David Harrison were among the Pacers players attempting to break up the fights.

Play was suspended while security personnel struggled to restore order, and both teams eventually headed to the locker room. The Pacers were drenched again by fans as they passed through the tunnel, and more confrontations erupted as fans attacked the players.

It was easily the worst incident in the 37-year-history of the Pacers franchise. It also was the first time in 47 years a Pistons game had been suspended before its completion.

"That was the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life, as a coach or player," Pistons coach Larry Brown said.

The incident began when Artest gave a hard foul to Pistons center Ben Wallace after the Pacers had clinched a victory against the defending champions.

Wallace responded by shoving Artest hard in the chest, and had to be restrained by Pacers players and coaches from attacking Artest.

Artest responded by laying on the scorer's table with one leg casually draped over his knee and his hands behind his head, smiling while the effort to restrain Wallace continued.

After a drink landed squarely on Artest's chest, however, he jumped up and rushed into the stands and began throwing punches at a fan. Jackson joined the melee and other Pacers rushed into the stands to attempt to break up the fights.

A stunned Pacers coach Rick Carlisle spoke briefly with ESPN reporter Jim Gray in the hallway outside the locker room.

"Our guys tried to show a lot of restraint. People were coming out and attacking our players. There were a lot of things going on. It's hard to know what was going on," Carlisle said.

No arrests were made after the game, and the entire Pacers traveling party boarded the bus for the airport. Police department officials said players will be extradited if a decision is made to file assault charges.

NBA suspends players involved in brawl
Associated Press
11/20/2004
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - The NBA suspended Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson of Indiana and Ben Wallace of Detroit on Saturday for taking part in one of the ugliest brawls in U.S. sports history.

The suspensions were indefinite, and the league was still investigating Friday night's melee, which commissioner David Stern called ``shocking, repulsive and inexcusable - a humiliation for everyone associated with the NBA.''

The league issued a statement saying it was reviewing rules and security procedures ``so that fans can continue to attend our games unthreatened by events such as the ones that occurred last night.''

Players and fans exchanged punches in the stands near the end of a the game. The mayhem left several people injured and prompted a police investigation.

Artest and Jackson charged into the crowd and fought with fans in the final minute of the game, forcing an early end to the Pacers' 97-82 victory.

Officials stopped the game with 45.9 seconds remaining after pushing and shoving between the teams spilled into the stands once fans started throwing things at the players near the scorer's table.

About three hours following the startling finish, Auburn Hills police walked out of a television trailer with videotapes gathered from media outlets. Officers interviewed witnesses at the arena in suburban Detroit and planned to talk to the players involved.

That's well put, and it's why one can be more critical of the players than the fans, even though their reactions were understandable on a human level. The pros are being paid a lot of money to represent the NBA, and they should be able to show restraint.

let me say i don't condone the actions of the pacers players, what they did were nothing short of disgraceful, and a suspension was most definietly deserved

HOWEVER, to rub out a player for a whole season is crazy....let's put this into perspective, artest didn't kill anyone, all he did was alnd a few punches and i think the david stern has got this wrong.....a suspension of about 30 games would have been sufficient, but a whole season? or even all of the regular games but not the whole season!!

and as much as everyone hates artest (me included) its sad to think this will probably be the end for artest's basketball career

yes but i'm not going to write off their season off just yet...their main man o'neal will be back after christmas and once they get him back they will be a force, with or without artest - the way detroit have been playing and fact that miami's bubble has bursted leaves the eastern conference wide open.....

and the pacers will start getting their injured players back i.e. miller, bender etc so they will still have to be watched by the other teams!

It's a shame the Bucks lost, Bad Gambler. They're on a 0-3 streak and the race for play off spots in the East will be close.
Peja had a poor season start, but is over the minor slump. He is one off the most underappreciated players in the NBA. I seem to recall he wasn't in lasts years all star game. Is that true?

great to see the bobcats topple the pistons - which makes me wonder what is going on with the champs? they are struggling big time and if anything they have a better team (on paper) then last year with the addition of delfino and journeyman mcdyess
very confusing

also i'm not happy with the spurs form recently :( how did they lose to the raptors!

Pistons are a good defensive team, but Ben Wallace is supended, and he's their main man on D. You could count on LeBron James and the Cavs to score a lot of points.
Interesting bet, that is, Tennisman!

Vince Carter would have been among the top a few years ago, but his body didn't hold up anymore and from what I've seen so far of him it looks like he has changed his playing style dramatically and is much more relying on his jump shots than going to the basket with all authority and energy.

Last time I looked for him, I found him somewhere ranked in the 60s. That says it all.

he's only making a dunk per game or something like that

Exactly, that's what I was thinking as well. Also his penetration and drive to the basket don't seem to be as aggressive and explosive as it used to be. I have just seen one complete Raptors game this season (mostly other teams are on TV here  ) and a maybe two or three short recaps, but it really looked like that for me.

But concerning Vince's jumpshot, I really think that he could turn out into a good shooter. I expect Iverson for example will never learn to shoot and will never be a good three point shooter, no matter what he is trying... Vince CAN do it, if the guy runs hot he knocks down almost every shot, no matter from where and I think his shooting skills aren't that shabby (basically a mediocre, maybe even slightly above, three point shooter I would say) and maybe there's even room for more improvement.
