Safin served for the match at 6-4 5-4 got broken then was 2 set points down at 5-6 and just scraped through the 2nd set

Still feeling a bit :sad: because it's the end of the season and David's injured again :sad: , but I thoroughly enjoyed this match. Marat was excellent - some fantastic passing shots and great groundstrokes. I enjoyed Lleyton's performance too - congrats to both.

Just when you least expect it, Marat turns it on!!! I only saw up until 4-3 in the 3rd. Got broken when serving for the match- that shouldn't cause too much alarm since Hewitt can do that with regularity to opponents.

Now come on Marat, win your 2nd TMS in a row and follow through with a good showing in Houston to cap the year off. A year which started out great, was mediocre and at times below-par in the middle, but seems it will finish in a blaze of glory :yeah:

Well done to Marat, after not having had such a good year in between, he really has turned things around. Now it is for him to win the tournament.

as an australian i'm very disappointed that hewitt lost

but i think its best that he puts the defeat behind him, perform well in houston and regroup for the aus open 2004.

But in the end of the day, Safin raises his tennis to a level unattainable to Hewitt.

On a funny note, I just saw a CNN news update that read:

Not really a surprise. When Marat is on, Lleyton has to be at his very best to beat him. For me, Marat is the real number 2 in men's tennis.

I agree with you there. Marat's the real #2. He just needs to keep his cool like he's been doing and he'll be #2. He's got deep reserves of natural talent and power and is one of the few players who have the talent to challenge Federer. Lleyton looked powerless against Marat. Marat was just too good on that day. Marat said you have to be very focused to beat Lleyton. Well despite a few blips like losing the first match point against Lleyton and opening the door to give Lleyton 2 set points, Marat fought back and won in two sets showing that he's focused. Hopefully he'll be able to keep his cool next year. I have to admit though that indoors carpet is Marat's surface and he's fared well against Lleyton on indoor carpet before, but outdoors on different surfaces the rivalry is closer.
