Congrats to Willy :worship: He never gives up - even with that injury he is carrying at the moment. Well done.

he is probably the most predictable player on tour as you always know what to expect, a great player and a great character :)

Haas seems to temporarily want to fill Safin's shoes as a tour tanker, if his (last two) matches against Canas are anything to go by. Of course, the US Open quarter-final was one of the most spectacular tanks of the season, wind or no wind.

As for Canas, he's just the kind of player you can back to save set point (as he did today) in a twenty stroke-plus rally on an indoor hardcourt. With the year he has had, I'm surprised there's even any dispute over him being the best comeback player of the year.

I hope that during the off season with some practice his problems with the ball toss will disappear.

He also used to hit his backhand better before the injury.

With this win, he would be tying, if he's not surpassed from behind, his career high at 12#.
If he wins his next match he will a mark a new high at 11#.

And he hasn't many points to defend till Wimby 05... he will be in Top 10 for sure, very well deserved

Willy, well done!!!!

Haas made too many unforced errors in the 2nd set, especially his backhand.

I read somewhere that Canas is 4-1 now in H2H against Tommy.

right. including today's match, Canas beat Haas for 4 times:
2002 Toronto, 2004 Miami, 2004 Vienna and 2004 Paris

and Haas once beat Canas in 2001 Vienna

Tommy. Can you be anymore pathetic?

Haas was really an oaf. :smash: :smash:
He had Canas on the racket and let him escape with two UNBELIEVABLE brutal errors in the tiebreak. One was an easy backhand volley that he would have had just get the racket on to let it drop in, and the other one was a pathetic error as he missed a should-high forehand shot that came down about three meters behind the net. Incredible! A 12 year-old girl would have made these points :o :banghead: :smash: Of course you can't win like that.

At least, Haas played a better first set than in Vienna a few weeks ago. But he couldn't deliver in the tiebreak.

The 2nd set was a brutal collapse and Haas got broken immediately in the first game. From there on you knew that Canas will never look back again.

Canas' game is just poison for Haas.

But well, Haas' season started earlier (concerning getting good results) so it's just fair to say that Canas has the better end for his own one now.

Congrats to Canas, I don't cheer for him often, but of course a good player!

and Haas once beat Canas in 2001 Vienna
yeah, Canas is developping into a nightmare for Haas. But thanksfully that Vienna 2001 match that Haas won was the most important one and it was in Haas' best career time so far.

If Canas can get through the semi-final, his champion race will be the 11th. If there are two player withdraw from TMC, he will be the alternative.
Please win today Canas. I will support you 100%.
He also said his target for 2005 is to play Master Cup.

Top stuff Canas and how enjoyable to see you show Haas who is the true master is and the continual bitchslapping of Haas is always enjoyable. I was disappointed with Haas. I thought there would be more screaming, and the outstanding way he saved the set point, Canas loves it the more he runs, the more he loves it.

Canas and Haas have a lot of respect for each other, they went thru similar problems, I think they played doubles together in madrid.

all you said there is very correct, and it could be seen they like each other when they had a little chat at the net after the match.

BTW, what I'm still missing is that anybody of the whole forum comments the fact that also Canas has used numerous injury timeouts in his last matches ;)

As some of you might know, I'm taking up anyway the position that any player may take his injury timeout at any time/score, but from famous examples in the past I know that's not the case with some others.

Well, so let me resume: For some, it seems to be okay if Canas was taking plenty of injury timeouts in his last matches and then went on to win, but when Robredo did it once since long time in Barcelona when he really needed it or if Coria did it in one of his matches we would have at least about 200 posts "he is using gamesmanship", "he is so unfair", "every time the same with Coria"...

(Nooooo, I don't "have to get over it" that Haas lost, so don't come up with it again ;) But it just came to my mind and I'm wondering what makes it okay if one player is doing it and what makes it bad if certain others are doing the same.)

hey neels u raise some good points....however i think canas timeouts were legitimate yesterday as if u saw the way he moved the first set you could see he wasn't 100%....that's why haas had so many chances to finish him off

bad gambler, I don't doubt AT ALL that Canas needed them!!!

But other examples also needed them and then again we had 12 pages threads where people came in saying how "unfair", how annoying or whatever else player XY is because he takes/took injury timeouts.

And anyway, we can't always judge from watching the match if a player really is injured of if he feels uncomfortable because of something.

But yes, you are right: with Canas you could notice it a bit.

What about Tommy? This match was like a shoot-out for the ATP Comeback Player of the Year Award

Canas dipped to the 200s in the rankings but Tommy was literally unranked and out for over 18 months. In his 5th event back he won Houston beating Roddick, beat Andre and Kiefer to win L.A., and made the QFs at the US Open and played a brilliant match against Andy at the Olympics.

I would give the edge to Tommy as the comeback player of the year.

Yes, this match was really awesome and a great one.
I'm glad that Lopez finally won it in Vienna after a hard fight, and deservedly IMO.

Let's see what happens today if Canas gets his revenge or if Lopez can confirm his win over him one more time.
