Yes, it is! Willy Cañas won it last year and it was great.
I'm soooo happy about this! I've been wanting to see David live for a long time, so I hope I can do it now.
I didn't want to go at first cause this is my last year at school, and I have my finals, but I'll study hard the priors weeks so I can be there. I'll start studying now!!!! LOL

I am so jealous I would love to be in BA eating those big steaks, having a great night out and watching the tennis before my night out.

Then again I just have to be patient.

But it will be very difficult because unlike other events, David will be the center of attention and will be full of people...But I'll see what I can do. :)

I don't think I mentioned this but it's in a hardcourt, it's for the players that are working in Australia's pre-season.
I think David has very good chances of winning it.
The Alt. are Acasuso, Horna, and I don't remember the third one...

I'm the same way. I like pictures OF people, but I don't feel any need to be in them. It's just not my thing. It's cool to see other people doing it though.

Listen to Rosie - he's not scary :p He's very approachable. Of course it's probably a bit easier to do that in Canada when you're at an MS and a lot of people don't really know who he is ;)

It does depend on the person and actually I am going to have to take some more fairly soon for certain reasons, but I prefer nature and landscape shots.

I remember having to tell RF and a few others that David is actually very good like that with the fans, and not like the press paint him out to be.

The press wants Hollywood personalities and laugh-a-minute jokesters. That's why they're puzzled by a person like David.

As I said on the other thread, I am really sorry for you if he doesn't play Jazz, and I hope desparately for you that he does - but I also hope for him that he makes the right decision for himself if that makes sense. If he hasn't practiced or played for a week then he won't be able to play to the best of his ability, and if he lost badly then he may feel he was letting himself and his fans down which wouldn't help his state of mind at all. I'm sure his Mum and brother Javier will help him make the right decision for all concerned.

Here is a report from last night's match, complete with my own (very poor!) translation. I didn't bother to translate the end of the article as it wasn't specifically about David. I have posted the picture from this article in the Pic thread, and the link to the article is below:-

http://msnlatino.espndeportes.espn.go.com/story?id=287512

TRANSLATION

Friday, 17 of December of 2004

In a great battle, in three sets - including two tie-breaks, David Nalbandian beat Mariano Zabaleta and got through to the semifinals of the Copa Argentina.

In the end, victory went to David Nalbandian, who defeated Mariano Zabaleta by 7-6 (7-5), 1-6 and 7-6 (7-4), to make sure of his place in the semifinals of the second Copa Argentina, held in the famous Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. Even though the match went into the early hours of Saturday morning, the people stayed to watch the match instead of leaving to go home. The presence of Nalbandian and Zabaleta, in a "see-saw" match with many ups and downs, kept the fans firmly in their seats.

It was a very tactical match between two players who know each other, and coach Eduardo Infantino very well, as Infantino used to train Zabaleta before working with Nalbandian, who is the highest ranked participant in the Copa Argentina, at Number 9° in the ATP rankings. Nalbandian, the best Argentinian player on fast courts, won the first Set on his ninth Set-point to gain first advantage. At 5-4 he had 3 points as Zabaleta went 0-40 down on his own service, but he recovered from this disadvantage to make the score 5-5. Nalbandian finally won the tie-break 7-5. Accompanied by his mother, girlfriend and brother, Nalbandian received much support just five days after the death of his Father, and he gave a smile to his supporters that was made in hope and showed his desire to win.

After that first even set, the top ten player lost his concentration and his level dropped in the second. He did not pressurise Zabaleta and was erratic. Although he recovered in the third set and started to play better again, it was very even with lots of rallies and Nalbandian went 4-1 ahead. But Zabaleta pulled back to 4-4 against the former Wimbledon finalist, and they maintained equality until the final set tie-break. This was played with more emotion than high-level tennis, which is not suprising because they were in the heat of a long battle and both looking towards the Australian Open next month.

David won :bounce: :bounce: The final score was 7-6(7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), I didn't stay up I'm afraid  - too tired, but there is good commentary on the tournament thread from a girl called Caroliman. I am so,soooo, very proud of him - to win under the circumstances - especially in a final set tie - break :) - now I know why I love him so much - CONGRATULATIONS David,- and I am so pleased for Jazz that she finally got to see him live and he won for her. Looking forward to the reports when you wake up Jazz :)
:worship: David did an amazing job!!!!
specially after the second set, he was out of the match the whole set, and he could lost the match, but he came back, and did a great match, and shows his great tennis.
After the match he said that he rescue his participation in the match, to return to the court after to have dispersed reason why all we know, and to have won, the crow applauded it a lot, and also encouraged it, was very good, in addition it said that it was decided, because it had already taken the commitment and because her family needed single days of tranquillity in Bs Ace. In the face one notices the wearing down and the sadness that resemblance produces loss, but the good thing is that it could handle his head, thing that is going to him to play in against, specially in Australia, and more if his mom decides not go with him, but so far!!!!! played tennis exquisite tennis .... Jazz, we waited for your late coments, because the party finished to the 01:30 a.m., so I suppose that you will sleep more ;) .You already have the tickets for tonight???? Cause in Olé says that is all sold!!!!! I´m so glad that the people suppor this proyect so much!!!!! And the players of course, all them plays like in a real tournament....so concentrated, so serious!!!! Is great.....
By the way David thanks to the crow for the support!!!! And his mom, and his girlfriends was there with him last night, of course Javier and Eduardo too.....

I posted this in our group too, but for the resto of the members here....
Is true Rose he lloks tired, and is for those sad days, but even in
that way he was "happy" (is just a way to say tha he was ok) for the
suppor that he recieved from the crow, he thanks for that and the
people just screaming and was clauping for him, that was warm, and
the hug from Zabaleta too, i think he feels contention in the
tournament, from the people, the organization and the others players,
of course his family too, but i mean that he can feel ok there, cause
if he wants to do something the organization is with him and
supporting him in this difficult time.....he even give a little
interview before the match, and another after the match, but
everything with a lot of respect from the journalists!!!!
Javier Frana(a good tennis player from here, thet now is a comentator
for ESPN, was saying all the time, that is something to admire that
David was playing there, and that he is one of the greatest player of
the world, that he´s so smart when he plays, that his oponent never
can know where he´ll send the ball, he always is a surpirse, that you
can never think that David lost the match till the match is over,
cause he always fight to the end, and a lot of matches he turn the
result to his favor!!!!Well even the comentators was warm with him
yesterday...and they told that Valeria Mazza was there, and was
taulking with his mom and his girlfriend, before the match....

Well, I arrived 1/2 earlier and I got to see Zabaleta and Acasuso training in the main court. By that time, I didn't know if David was gonna play or not, and everyone was wondering the same thing. But right before Acasuso vs Gonzalez match it was confirmed and everyone started applauding really hard.

The Gonzalez vs Acasuso match was pretty even, I thought Feña was gonna win it easily, but I was mistaken. The ballboys should have listened to what I said and put on a helmet, because the balls hit everyone, even the car that the winner will take, was hit several times and I still cannot understand how the glasses didn't get broken! And a ballboy was hit really hard in the head, which made him a bit dizzy, Feña and José approached him immediatly to see if he was ok, and he was.
After the match, José had to play some points with the winners of a sub 10 and 12 tournament, and Feña said he wanted to play too, and they played a doubles. It was a really nice attitude from him, and everyone thanked him. He was treated with a lot of respect and applauses, the crowd was cheering both players eaqually.

Then, they announced the next match and the first one to enter the court was David, and crowd started yelling a lot, and cheering him. That made him stood in the middle of the court and thanked the whole crowd. He was wearing black, and to tell you the truth, he doesn't look that fat. He's obviously not a skinny person, but he's not fat at all. I couldn't believe I was actually watching David live, after all the time I followed him on tv and online. It was a great feeling.
David started very solid, and confident for the first 3 games, but then started to have so inestability problems. Even bigger than he usually has. Mariano gave him a huge fight, and I thought he could beat David. But David fought back, and won the first set, in a tie break, although he could have won it more easily. Then in the second set, he was completly gone. He won a point by the time he was 0-5, and then he had 3 break points to get 5-2 but he lost it anyway.
The third set was better, David started very solid again, and broke Mariano's serice right away, but then he was broken, and had to hold his serve till get to the tie break. I was going nuts, cause my friend, who's also a fan of his, couldn't join me to today and wanted to see him, and was constantly sending me little notes like: cheer him more, or be louder LOL. I also got info from Ceci, and some nice SMS.
Just to let you know, both players are River fans, and their archi-rival, Boca (which I am a fan of ) was playing a final, so every time they scored a goal, they crowd would cheer LOL It was very funny, but not for David and Mariano.
One thing that got to my attention, was soooo many kids cheering for David. Because as the match went on, the crowd cheered for both of them. But the kids (and me )were with David yelling things like: you're my idol, you're the best, you're the master. It was really sweet.
David led the tie break, and needed some match points to finally make it. And we he did it, the crowd was wild. He approached the net and Mariano gave him a very warm, heartful hug, that lasted for a long time, and you could see David was very touched. The reporter wanted to interview him right away, but he asked for a moment.
He started talking very slowly, not knowing what to say at first, but then let it all out. He said that he was glad that he won the match, it was complicated cause they were both in the pre-season and not a lot of match practice. But it got worse for him this week, for what happened. But he was proud and glad that he sticked to his commitment and played because that's making him well. He still finds it hard to keep in foucus during the match, cause his mind goes somewhere else, but he knows he'll move on and as days go by he'll get better. Finally he thanked the crowd and said he was glad to make his first step at home
To tell you the truth, I wanted to go out there and hug him, but I'm pretty sure I was gonna be taken to prison on somewhere else LOL!
He left the court and the crowd applauded him, and he apologised for not signing any autographs, but I think it was understandable.
Not only did I get to see him play, but I also so him win, and I'll see him again today
It was a great Xmas present from David
Well, if I remember something else, I'll post it

Ok, if yesterday was good, today was even better!!!!
I went with a friend and arrived an hour later. And thank God we did that! Gastón was in the central court training with Davin, and he was shirtless!!! LOL All I have to say is: wow. My friend is still comenting on it, and now she's a Gaudio fan LOL
The match started later than stated, but in the meantime we saw Calleri training with his trainer. After that, the match started and it was good. Maradona came back today and crowd was completly happy. The atmosphere was amazing, even so, David appeared during Gastón's match and went to talk to Maradona. They were laughing and having a nice time. It was great to see David laughing again
Gastón played a very nice match, and he's getting better as days go by.
Then, after the match Gastón played with some kids that won a contest and it was sooooooooooooooooooo nice and sweet! The guy was full of patience and seemed to have a great time with the little kids, he even lent them his racquets. Then, some kids with mental disabilities played tennis with him, and he was even sweeter. I think after that, my friend completly fell for him LOL I must say, I loved it too
David's match was AMAZING! He did everything right, his service was pretty impressive, and Acasuso played a nice match. It was mainly in the baseline, but David's shots were incredible. He played a superb match, and the crowd wanted to see more of it! I was told that during David's match, Maradona was commenting on him, and said that David is ahead of the rest of the players, that Gaudio has the magic, but David has the head or something to it. It was probably one of the best matches I've seen and David took all the chances he got, he even finished the tie break with an ace
In today's interview he was better, he was laughing and making jokes. And said that he felt much more confortable in court and that he hoped all these people could be there tomorrow and on Davis Cup
I think I saw his mom, his brother Darío and a very pretty brunnet, who seemed to be Victoria
At the end of the match David seemed very happy and threw a lot of balls to the court and I saw terribly close to get one, but a girl in front of me did
Tomorrow I'll take my camera with me, and let's all hope Gastón is shirtless again LOL!

i love your report, Jazz!! You are enjoying what you dreams all the time!!! I saw the matches in our TV sports news yesterday, and they gave Maradona many shots. Thanks for his comments that all of us like to listen, and it's so damn right :yeah:

Two big stars will be in the final of the Copa Argentina at 7.30pm tonight on the hard courts of Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. Last night Gastón Gaudio overcame Agustín Calleri 3-6, 6-3 , 6-4 in the first semifinal. Gaudio was 3-0 ahead in the third with two breaks in his favour, when the Cordoban began to take more risks. The Roland Garros champion could not take advantage of his lead to win with a greater margin. But he won through and will be in the final against David Nalbandian.

On Friday night Nalbandian beat Mariano Zabaleta 7-6 (5), 1-6 and 7-6 (4), and last night in the semis he beat Jose Acasuso 6-2, 7-6(5). After the semi-final Nalbandian said - "I felt much more relaxed today than I did when I played Zabaleta. Still we're a little stiff and out of practice because it's the pre-season. Plus, of course, my own problems didn't help" (his Father Norberto died one week ago). "My objectives for 2005 are to play more matches, win a Grand Slam and the Davis Cup", He continued "I haven't played here at home since the Davis Cup tie against Russia. I felt the affection from the people and it made me feel great". The champion will take away a Peugeot 206 car as a prize. At 5.30pm, there will be doubles' exhibition match bewteen Etlis-Rodriguez and Prieto-Hood.

The professional

He could have made an excuse not to play, but no, he came to Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. With his spirits low due to the death of his Father last week, David Nalbandian fulfilled his commitment. In the stands were his family - his Mother Alda, his brothers Darío and Javier, and his girfriend Victoria. They stood all together to face their pain.

The professional behaviour of the top 10 player from Cordoba was recognized in the home of Argentine tennis. When he entered the court to make his debut against Mariano Zabaleta (which he gained 7/6 (7-5), 1/6 , 7/6 (7-4), the public gave him an affectionate ovation. Cries of "Vamos David" dominated the night, with great affection from people who had come back to see him play in Buenos Aires after a year and eight months away.
He was not at his best - that is certain. He did not play to his best level and did not seem to be enjoying himself. The match finished in the early hours of Saturday, and David appeared in the press conference and responded slowly and carefully to each question. He said "What I have been through in the last days was hard and complicated. It is hard for me to concentrate. In addition, I feel tired as it is the pre-season .I am working intensively to make sure I don't have so many injuries as I did last season". The Cordoban player had eyes reddened from crying and his voice was much lower than his usual tone. When Luis Lobo, ex Davis Cup doubles player and now organiser of the event, asked him hours before the event what he was going to do, David said to him: "I'm coming to win", to which "Lobito" responded: "If that is your attitude, you're going to be number one of the world".

At the hardest moments, David's professional attitude had a double value. Perhaps it is part of his ultimate private tribute to his Father, or a return to his roots in adversity, but the certain thing is, that he came and fulfilled his promise. Norberto, his Father, must be contented

Thanks for that Rosie and the Spanish lessons must have worked and this event will make him even stronger and I love what Vilas said about him. "He has the capacity to make the other guy play like shit".

I'd like to congratulate David, though he lost to Gaston 6/4 4/6 2/6.

He has made the courageous choice to take part to the Copa and has wonderfully played to reach the final. Not everybody, given the circumstances, would have been able to do as much. So congratulations David for everything... :worship:

Thanks Choupi. Must admit I was really hoping David would eventually win a final. I got up to check the result and can't deny that I burst into tears when I saw the score - it would have meant so much to him - but I'm glad it was Gaston who won. Congrats to Gaston - so sorry David

Ok guys, I'm back. And I'm terribly sad!!!
David started well, playing a good first set, but then he wasn't precise and Gastón took advantage of it. It was a very nice match from Gastón
But I'm sad cause when David lost and he had to give the speech he indicated with his head that he couldn't make it, so the corwd applauded him even more and he started to cry It was very emotional, and then Gastón thanked the crowd and mentioned David's situation and how brave he was. Luis Lobo did the same thing and went with David out of the court.
Lobo has been taking care of David during the whole exhibition, I could see it yesterday when David was watching the prior matches and Luis hugged him and kissed him and spent all the time talking to him. The crowd was great, very respectful and thankful for his fight and spirit.
And finally, I want to congratulate Gastón for this win, he trully deserved it

I'm sorry that you're so sad Jazz.......watching David lose a final is always upsetting (I've seen enough of them  ), and under these circumstances it must have been heart-rending. I just hope that in time you remember all the good times of this tournament and your memories are not ruined by the end. As for David - I am sad - so very sad- that he couldn't take this final step- for him and for his family. I hope in time he looks back on this Copa Argentina as a good experience which gained him a lot of friends, respect and admiration, instead of feeling let down that he has lost yet another final  The next few weeks will not be easy for him - the first "anniversary" (Christmas,Birthday etc) after a loved one has passed away are always the hardest, and David has everything to deal with in a short time.I pray that he has the strength to get through this and come back strong in 2005.

I can't be too happy about the particular circumstances of Gaston winning.

So I'll say I saw David breaking down and he showed great courage just turning up and playing the event. Sure it was painful for him, but this experience will make him even stronger, but I am very happy that the crowd showed him respect and as Rosie said he gained a lot of respect this week due to the courage he showed by turning up to play.

Gaston beated my Nalbo on hard court! It is a joke. If David is in the fine condition, Gaston won't take a set from David.

Best of luck to David Nalbandian. Bodes well for 2005.

Jazz, sorry, it's another unprefect ending for you. Another finalist, another final curse. I know you are sad, the feeling even doubles when you watch it live. But, this is a excellent exhibition, we see much joy and happy moments for both you and him in your former match reports, that's enough. Don't let the unprefect final ruin your great experience. Keep the trust as you always do, he will do better in 2005.

And congrats to Gaston, according to Jazz, this Copa Argentina de Tennis can bring the luck to the player who win it. So it is really a good preparation for Gaston's 2005. :)

Sorry, Arg girl. I am not a Gaston fan. but he isn't that bad on hard court like you think. He is a talented player. If you watch some of his matches, you will feel that. Many people have the misconception that Argentinians can only play well on clay except David. In fact, many of them play well on hard court, and can even better in the future. Gaston deserves this winning, though i had strongly hoped David could win this time.

I'm feeling better now. I just watched parts of yesterday's match and Gastón was superb. David started well, but then made a lot of errors and couldn't come back. Gastón might be a clay court especialist, but he plays really well on hardcourts. He even sent Federer to a tie break, and not many can say that. Just ask Hewitt or Roddick ;)
I think it was a very positive tournament for David in spite of the final. He gained a lot of respect and new fans, I can assure you that.
This is what Gastón said at the end:
"Quiero decir que hay que valorar mucho que David haya venido después de lo que le pasó. Quiero que todos lo aplaudamos mucho"
"I want to say that we have to value a lot David coming here after what happened to him. I want that everyone applaudes him a lot."

I'm watching the match again, this time on tv, and I remembering things now that I forgot to mention like David's service. It has improved a lot, and he made a couple of aces with his second service. And some other with his first. I'm sure he's been working on it.
As for Infantino, I kept on looking at him like I wanted to tell him somthing, but I didn't know what to say. And he looked at me like he was expecting something lol! Next time, I guess ;)

Reading about David crying is bringing tears into my eyes too. I feel so sad for him. But I also admire how brave he has been to come here and play, and I'm glad the crowd showed their appreciation of him, that was a lovely gesture of support.
