Let's start a new cheering thread. Ernests got into Cincinnati qualifying with his old ranking, and hopefully he doesn't pull out because of his shoulder problems. I haven't seen anything about his shoulder in the Latvian media so I hope it's not a serious injury.

Cincinnati qualifying starts on Saturday.

Paldies Evita! (btw Congratulations to Latvia for the bronze medal in Beach Volleyball. I really enjoyed watching all the games! Good to have some Latvians on my TV :p ) I too saw Ernests' name on the qualifiers list & I'm hoping he will be there as originally planned. I have tweeted Novotny about it days ago but didn't expect a reply, especially considering there haven't been tweets in some time. I will find out soon enough! *crosses fingers*

Ernests does not use his twitter so it's pretty pointless at the moment.

The qualifying draw is out. Ernest's first opponent is Lu and then probably Falla who is playing Ryan Harrison's younger brother in the first round.

I think he has good chances to qualify if he's healthy but you never know, Falla can be a tricky opponent, Ernie has lost to him twice and won 3 times.

-Evita-
08-11-2012, 04:41 PM
Ernests is playing against Lu now. He had 3 consecutive BPs at 2-2 but didn't break :o Then he saved 2 BPs in his own service game. 3-3 now. I thought he would get broken in this game :bolt:

kryptonmania

Unfortunately he lost to Lu. 3:6 2:6
5 double faults and very low 1st serve %...sigh...

So his ranking will go down to around No.143 next week. He won't make it into the main draw of US Open with such low ranking.
I really want to see him in New York :(

Hey Everyone! :wavey: If you follow my twitter @CM_TravelingFG ;) You would have seen my tweets from the match. As you can see, it wasn't a good one. I really can't sugar coat it, even though I want to! I spoke to him before the match and asked him how his shoulder was. He was all smiles as he said it feels better. It didn't seem to bother him in the match so I can't use that as an excuse to why he lost. I really don't know what was wrong with him today! It was just error after error! He had some good points but Lu was the solid player out there today. Btw- Bresnik & Papa were not in Cincinnati. I will do a larger write up of the match for a blog & will post it in the future!

Hi Jade! :wavey: Edna here. I am sorry that Ernests lost his qualifying match. Maybe he did not think that this was an important one to win? Anyway, do you know when he will play next? Is he going to play at the USO? Thanks for any info you can give me. :)

 Yes, Christine is right. To my surprise Ernests showed up at the practice courts today. He practiced for about an hour & a half. It seems his shoulder has started to bother him again. Don't know how much. He was laughing and having fun in practice. He was beating Davydenko pretty good! Shame it wasn't a real match, but Ernests does say he beats everyone in practice. :p He told me he is leaving tomorrow. :yeah: Oh, and Karlis was also with him for the practice.

:cuckoo: Why in the world are we even mentioning the final? They haven't even played round one yet! Granted the field isn't very strong but we can't always go by that!

Is there livestream for the event? I'm still in Cincinnati so I can't follow the match. I wondered if he is showing signs of discomfort in his shoulder. His shoulder looked fine in his match but he was fussing with it a bit two days later.

More to the point - why is there so much bloody misery here?:cuckoo: There are far more things in life to be miserable about!! If people haven't got anything positive or meaningful to say then it would be better not to post. This is why I barely come here any more. It is time to shut the fuck up,or get out if you cant cheer. What is wrong with you people? Do you have a reason to criticise someone you supposedly support? Where Ernests plays, how often, and how he plays is HIS business!!

It is hard to post with such a generally miserable atmosphere hence the reason(besides personal family problems) why I haven't been here for a while.

Nice turnaround here from Ernests so far today:bigclap: He often gets off to a slow start no matter how he feels physically.

Remember our guy is playing with chronic shoulder pain,he is scheduling carefully for that reason. People here who expect him to play every week with an injury are just:facepalm::stupid:

Now ffs sake cheer!

Btw thanks so much for updates Courtney:smooch: Have enjoyed them very much:yeah: Thanks for bringing some joy to me.

GSM to Ernests in 1st rd qualifying 6-4 6-3!:yeah: He struck 11 aces in the end,and his serving percentage ended up in mid 60s.

Lets see who he faces in next round later today. I hope he gets some more good treatment for his shoulder. He's the 1st winner of the qualifying matched today, and gets a bit more rest than the others. Hopefully that will benefit him somewhat:)

I haven't noticed too much misery here, people are simply not posting. Anyway, I'm glad he got the win and hopefully he can get some more. If he can qualify (and that's a big if in my mind) he will have the advantage of being used to the courts and the atmosphere.

but-it's-ok
08-18-2012, 05:45 PM
I did not understand, are you referring to me?

Not you in particular, but in general there is an increasing number of negative people here. I have especially noticed several people who moan and are critical every time they post. These people know who they are.

All I was saying was that people who want Ernests to play every week with an injured shoulder are not being fair, and are a bit stupid. None of us would play with an injury and yet there are people here who want him to anyway:facepalm:. It concerns me when people here are unhappy because Ernests doesn't play every week and ask why. It's a bit:crazy:

We ALL need to realise Ernests is playing through pain at the moment, but is making the best of the situation. He will know how his shoulder is affecting him. Whilst he has physical problems,we should encourage him, stay positive but be aware he might not play his best because of the injury.

Most of all there is no need for negative posts, given his situation. Ernests will do what he wants and not ONE of us can control that,so lets accept that.

-Evita-
08-18-2012, 07:52 PM
I'm sorry Di but I don't think you (or anyone else except the forum moderators) have the right to tell us how we ALL need to post here. As long as people stay respectful they're allowed (per forum rules) to express their concern or pessimism. We should encourage Ernests, yes, of course, but I'm sure he doesn't read this forum so it doesn't matter to him what we write here. We just discuss him and his games here, and if his results are less than stellar then the discussions will reflect that. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure better times will come again.

P.S. You seem very sure he's playing through pain at the moment. I don't know, I think he wouldn't do that, he would take some time off and let it heal properly if it was something serious.

but-it's-ok

I just stated facts! I was NOT telling everyone how to post. But life is too short to be pessimistic for no reason. FFS I know he doesn't read this Forum. What a stupid thing to say!!!:o

Ernests will be playing through some pain, shoulder injuries are the most painful things. Of course his pain varies, and obviously his shoulder benefits from rest.

The most annoying thing I was pointing out though was how much people here seem to complain when he doesn't play. Or expect him to win when carrying an injury.

PS I know who the miserable people are who spoil it for the rest. For you to say we have discussions here:lol: Best laugh I've had today. We used to. I'm not responsible for the ones who don't say something positive or run away when he loses(or even from the moment he drops serve) If people are gonna attempt a live score at least try and see it to the end:lol:

-Evita-
08-18-2012, 09:38 PM
So you badrepped me for that post? I'm not telling you to do anything, it's you who is telling other people stuff. And for your information, I post here when I feel like posting, I have no obligation to livescore his whole match if I posted something when he started it.

I just stated facts! I was NOT telling everyone how to post. But life is too short to be pessimistic for no reason.

That's what I meant. Some people think the fact that he's losing a lot is a reason to be pessimistic. You think that's not a reason, fine, but other people can decide that for themselves.

The most annoying thing I was pointing out though was how much people here seem to complain when he doesn't play.

It's weird, I haven't noticed that.

Or expect him to win when carrying an injury.

He won today. Does that mean he's finally free from the injury? Or does it mean he can win even with this "injury"? If people don't expect him to win then this place will get even more pessimistic than it is now.

Erik Gudris ‏@AdjustingTheNet *from twitter

Gulbis loses the break in 2nd set. Guess I'm showing up for this one in time.

"Oh say can you see..." it's a tiebreaker
Ernests gets a lucky net clip on his passing shot. 3-1

Gulbis train keeps on rolling in @WSOpen Beats Anderson, with a dropshot, naturally 64,76.
If Ernests started a blog it would be called 'dropshots and double faults"

Once again, Gulbis gives some candid thoughts on himself and the rest of the tour...
When asked what his favorite thing to do in NY is, Gulbis says, "I'm not going to tell you. Then laughs

"These five wins were all tough. I guts it out a little bit. I'm hoping to have a good feeling for the ball when I reach NY

Gulbis will play qualies at big events than challengers to try & boost ranking "I know any week I can reach quarters, semis if I play well."

Eh, that's not completely true. Matches on American hard courts can go pretty quick depending on who is playing! A lot of times I had to wait around before the 4pm matches to begin because the ones before it finished up an hour or so before that! Then again, a lot of the matches this year in Cincinnati didn't have close score lines. It really just depends on the matches and weather. He could get on court right on time, or very late! We'll see ;)

Or, you can keep it short and simple and just say... NB 4pm :p

He can beat Marcel. But I won't be too disappointed if he loses this match. Crash the party at NY is our goal, baby.

Marcel wasn't playing well in Cincinnati, but neither was Ernests! I have no idea how that match will go but I really hope Ernests continues his run! :)

He is already in Main Draw. The US Open is a MUCH larger draw than in Masters tournaments. No Qualifiers needed. If you look at the qualifiers, the players are ranked much lower!

Hey guys! :wavey: What about that win, huh? :rocker: The whole time my heart was in my throat. As I was there, I will share some little things that I have observed:

I was very lucky to have sat right behind Team Gulbis (Papa, Brother, Coach, a man who looked like Ernie who may be an uncle, and an elderly man). His brother is such a staunch supporter; he has his eyes on Ernie almost the entire time, even during changeovers. And I thought only his fans call him "Ernie" but his brother calls him Ernie too! Whenever Ernie hits a winner, Brother says "Love it!" or "Beautiful!" but when he cheers Ernie on, he almost always says, "Davai!" and some other Latvian words. Papa prefers "Bravo!" and a very emphatic "C'mon!" but he is more sparing with his cheering.

During the 1st two sets, I thought that Ernie was not reading Haas' serves well because he missed quite a few of them. Also, he is still making those ridiculously long shots where the balls go a meter past the baseline, which I thought he would have controlled by now. I watched this very closely and noticed that he is often off-balanced when he makes those shots for he is running while hitting at the same time, and it was either a case of not having much control of his body or of the power he puts on his shots and he sometimes lets out a frustrated howl when this happens. When he controls this part of this game, he will win many more matches for sure. Nevertheless, he played with more composure and maturity. He hardly showed emotion. It was Haas who actually lost his cool, as during the 4th set he started to curse. Also -and I found this very interesting- during the 7th game of the 4th set, when Haas saved some break points and was poised to make it a tie, Brother said something in Latvian and Ernie gave him a quick thumbs up as if to say: "Don't worry, I got this." I thought it was just great that Ernie was composed and confident even when he was still down a set.

As for the crowd, there was a small, and as Courthey said, very loud group of supporters who may have been of Latvian origin. They certainly gave Ernie a boost and kind of got some of the crowd behind Ernie too, which was more pro-Haas than pro-Gulbis. During the final two games of the 5th set, Haas started cramping and I thought that he would ask for a medical timeout but he didn't. After that, it was Ernie all the way.

So, on to Friday and I will be there again to cheer him on. I took some pictures today and will try to figure out how to upload them but I must apologize in advance because I don't have a very good camera and I take crappy pictures. :o

There were two old ladies sitting right behind me today, who were apparently rooting for Tommy Haas and didn't know who Ernests is. When they saw Ernests' introduction info on the big screen before the match, they were like "hm...his last year's result was second round, I'm afraid he can't pass the first round this time,"...and when they saw Ernests showed up on the court, one of them said "wow, he's really cute," and the other one added, "he's taller than Tommy and he's a really good looking guy..."

Great achievement coming back from 0:2 against a really good player. I was too nervous to watch the match most of the time though:)
And now I´m nervous for the next round, they will probably put him on a minor court with no challenge system, just hope Ernests can keep his cool and finally advance past round 2 in a GS otherwise this win is as good as nothing.

That's true, he hasn't been in the third round of a Grand Slam in forever and this is a great opportunity to do that. But the line calls in this year's US Open have been horrible (not just in Ernest's match) so I worry about him being on an outside court as well. But - his opponent is an American so maybe they will put him on a TV court with challenges again :)

He is playing against an American so there is a good chance he will get another TV court, however it could go either way. The American he is playing is unknown to me, but I heard he is a good player so anything is possible there.

I thought about Nikita but I wasn't sure. It's been awhile since I've seen him too and he looks kind of different now doesn't he? I really do think it's the hair that through me off. Stop cutting your hair off people! I think Nikita WAS in Cincinnati but didn't realize it until now. He never went to the practice courts with Ernests but was at his match sitting with Dominic. I was too busy trying to figure out Dominic that I overlooked Nikita. Shame on me! Wonder what he's been doing now. (besides traveling with Ernests) Last I heard he was doing a bit of coaching.

But - his opponent is an American so maybe they will put him on a TV court with challenges again :)

I've said this before and will say it again-- today's officiating is ill-equipped to deal with the new kind of tennis that the young crop of players are playing these days which include Ernie, Anderson, Belluci to name a few (these are the ones I've actually seen play in person) because they play such a high-risk, high-speed game. When these very tall and hunky guys go for their shots, the balls are too fast for the naked eye and how are you supposed to see them when they just nick the lines, and especially from the vantage point of your chair on the side of the court? The umpire has a better view but he has other things to deal with. It is a challenge and a disadvantage for these players, to be sure, and I bet they have already complained about this.

TravelingFanGirl

I went to the US Open last year during qualifiers week and the officials were pretty poor. Lot of players and fans were complaining about calls. It really is a shame! The commentators also dug into the poor performance from officials. The USO umpires are not ATP & WTA regulars, they are from another organisation. I assume USTA? I heard the commentators talking about it the other day.

My heart is crying over this loss.:sad::sad: This is not how it was supposed to be. Ernie was every bit the better player. Even though they are both big servers, Ernie's serve was better: speedier, sharper angles, more variety. And in the rallies, Ernie outdid Johnson. The longer the rallies went, the more Johnson was prone to commit errors and so he had to come up with winners and finish them quickly. That was his strategy as far as I could see. Serve well and finish the point quickly. Ernie held forth and held him at bay until that 2nd set tie break when it was 3-3. Frankly, I think that Ernie was a bit "loosey goosey" in playing that tie break. The unforced errors he made after 3-3 ultimately cost him the match. Once he let Johnson in the match, i.e., win that 2nd set, the crowd started to rally around Johnson and the guy started to play like he had nothing to lose. He swung more freely, his serves connected, he played with more conviction, and hit more winners. The guy was pumped up. From that point on, Ernie was on the defensive and it didn't help that the crowd at times cheered when he lost a point because it meant a point to Johnson. And the louder the crowd cheered for Johnson, the tighter Ernie became, I think. During the 4th set, I noticed that Ernie was hitting the ball harder, out of desperation perhaps (you could hear the great exertion in his breathing) but sadly his balls went out. He was too tight and perhaps nervous as well. (Sigh) If he could only have had the same group of loud supporters as he had the other day, I think that that would have boosted his morale a bit. That sort of thing really does help. I think Ernie did put up a good fight- for some of you maybe not hard enough- but Johnson is one scrappy, gutsy American player who played with a big heart today. If there is one thing I can fault Ernie with, it is that he did not seem to be "hungry" enough. Much less talented players like Johnson can eke a win out of him because they are hungrier for it. I also think that Ernie plays better or is more pumped up when his opponent is an equally talented player, like Haas, for example. Of course, I base my opinions on the last two matches, so there is very little for them to stand on. :tape:

The last time I saw Ernie play was Cincy 2011 and I have seen a marked improvement in his overall game. 1. He is more emotionally self-contained, even when he is losing, and this is by far the biggest improvement. 2. He plays a cleaner game; fewer UE's. 3. He is more patient during rallies and his shot selection is much better. 4. His shots on both sides are as good if not better than ever. 5. His serve is, as ever, out of this world. From what I have seen, he is playing more like a top ten player now. I think that he just needs to work on the intangibles of the game. Today was a derailment. Hopefully he will learn much from it. I can't wait for next year's USO.

Not much else to report that you haven't seen on tv, except for three things: 1. Late in the 3rd set, Ernie muttered loudly enough for us to hear: "line, line, line, line, line, line..." Did he mean aim for the lines? or the line calls were shitty? I have no idea. 2. When the match was over, Ernie left the court and walked among the crowd all alone all the way to Ashe stadium. He had the saddest face and people paid him no attention. I felt really bad for him. In two days, he went from a big win to a bad loss (yes, this IS a bad loss). I followed him until he entered the stadium and was wondering where was team Gulbis? 3. Lastly, he had 4 shirt changes, 3 sock changes, and 2 shoe changes. lol:

I pretty much agree with you, Truedaisy.

But I think Johnson did play extremely well during crucial moments. He earned those break points by making brave and terrific winners, while most of the break points Ernests got were due to Johnson's unforced errors. So I would give the credits to Johnson.

Ernests indeed didn't look hungry today. He was kinda laid back during several key points and hit too many unsuccessful drop shops when he can actually hammered the balls when coming to the net, allowing Johnson to come up with several amazing passing shots.

Also, I think Ernests didn't return well today in comparison to Johnson. There were many times that Ernests hit 130+ miles serves and Johnson simply sliced them back to the court without any issues.

I was sad and felt sorry for him after watching this match live. I did notice that left the court alone after the match and walked to Arther Ash. Anyway, hopefully he will train harder and get more good results in the near future.

Oh no they're on the same week as Thailand Open :( I won't see him this year then

Anyway, at this stage playing challengers in Europe sounds more logical than travelling all the way to Asia for some quallies. Good luck Ernie.

09-28-2012, 07:24 PM
Well nice start with injury and all, if he can do it quick it might not turn out to be a problem...fingers crossed. He is doing a lot of weird moves with legs as if something is bothering him though:(

TravelingFanGirl
09-28-2012, 07:28 PM
On twitter it is being said it's his ankle. Shame to have something hurt at the start of the match. Hopefully he can play on! *crosses fingers*

-Evita-
09-28-2012, 07:29 PM
He's calculating every move and doesn't try to run down some balls that he might have otherwise tried to reach. But his serve is working at least and Bautista-Agut is not playing very well. It's so frustrating to see because a healthy Ernest would definitely have beaten him. But today... he is very vulnerable at the moment because of his limited movement.

Edit: it doesn't seem like it's the ankle judging by the way he bends his knees often. And now that his serve wasn't working he lost the break. Damn... I can't watch it, it's obvious something is bothering him

eze
09-28-2012, 07:42 PM
He is trying to serve it out and makes too many df because of that, I wonder how long he can keep it up. And Bautista is really no match for Ernie, it will be such a shame if he lost because of injury...

Sportacentrs writes he will not play Mons Challenger as previously planned. If the knee is good he will play 250 in Vienna and then 500 in Basel. He will have to go through qualies in both. After that the plan is to play Bratislava and Helsinki challengers.

Honestly, I think that's a bunch of crap. Ernests has been playing well. He did great in Orleans and would have done even better had he not got the injury. I have not looked at the qualifier list, and although Ernests' ranking is very low, I think he still should be considered a big name. To me, the Wildcard seemed to be a natural choice without trying to make nice of past situations. I don't know exactly why he was given the wild card, but I also think people like to stir the pot a bit, and take credit away from Ernests. I too hope Ernests proves how much he deserves the wildcard!

Perhaps Ernests got the WC because he's now with an Austrian coach, who in the past has worked with a lot of big names that have previously done well at the tournament. That's my thinking. Who knows for sure?

Here is the text about his wild card:

The final wildcard will got to Ernests Gulbis from Latvia, whose father was the reason for some uproar in the players lounge two years ago. Gulbis had to depart prematurely because of that. The Wildcard now should go a long way to show that things have been forgiven and forgotten.

As already said its just what some journalists wrote... ;)I don´t like it but I don´t think that this is the only reason why they gave it to Ernests .. An important fact is that Jürgen Melzers position in the tournament ranking would have changed if they had given the WC to a higher-ranked player.. And I do also think that Bresnik may have also played an important part :)

I think I remember something about a coffee-related incident at the tournament restaurant... With a waiter... Or maybe it was with an umpire? I don't think it was a big deal, and I think that's not the main reason Ernests was given a WC, Bresnik probably is.

If anyone´s interested and knows German here is a relatively new article about that story.. For those who don´t know german.. The article says that Ainars "threw" hot coffee on a waiter in the players lounge, because he was angry.. In some artciles it even says that Ainars was angry because he did not get any soup at 11.. But to be honest: If it really was like that (and Ainars fault), why should they give him the Wc now??

Doesn´t matter anyway.. Ernests gets hsi chance to receive some important points:)
