Gaasquet was supposed to play Haase today but it was postponed due to rain and will now play the match on Monday. 1st on court 15.

Looses 4/6 4/6 against Baghdatis.

He was broken both times at 4/4 in each set. Marcos did not face a single break point in the entire match.

Richard plays the doubles later on.

Very disappointing grass season overall. Got easily beaten by Mayer and not very competitive against Baghdatis.. I think it is fair to say that any sort of illusion of magic that he had on grass in previous years is long gone. It looks like clay is his best chance to win any sort of tournament now or the slim chance of getting past round of 16 in slam.

Bryans will probably be too tough but I thought that about their last 2 opponenets as well so who knows. Just one more win either against bryans or the loosers of the other match and Richard gets an Olympic medal

I missed the match due to prayer. They were showing the match here in the UK.

Looking at the stats, the Bryans were comfortable on serve. It was always going to be a tough match but they got the Bronze Medal match tomorrow! That should be good. :)

They aren't number 1 for nothing. Richard and Julien scored more winners, but also more errors than the Bryans, so they must have been quite aggresive, good for Richard's overall game.

I wonder if the will go to Toronto, they entered the doubles draw together.

They were not bashing balls and flying around the court like Tsonga and Llodra but relative to Richard's usual play, he was VERY, VERY aggressive and it was WONDERFUL to see!!! Benneteau played about the way he usually does in doubles and singles which is always more aggressive than Richard.

Bottom line on that match - the Bryan's were a better doubles team. They had so many different looks and just move together, always in the right place and taking advantage of every doubles angle.

Team France may not have won but I was PLEASANTLY surprised at how well and "aggressive" Richard played. I've seen most of the last three doubles matches and he has played that way in every one  Silverwhite, you might even have been pleased :D. He wasn't aggressive in the way Tsonga and Llodra were but Richard did go for every return, had VERY good court position and volleyed well :eek: His serve didn't produce a lot of winners but wasa fairly effective for Benny to pick off.

www.nbcolympics.com has live streaming and replay of 4 courts all week for those in the U.S. that have an account with certain internet/cable providers; so I got lucky this time.

I saw parts of the Tsonga/Llodra-Lopez/Ferrer match. Lopez played VERY good doubles and Ferrer surpised me- will be tough to beat the Spainards but i think they have a better chance against them than Tsonga/Llodra . Take home the Bronze!

Draw is really wide open to get to the final.. Fish has not played well this year at all and Richard likes Toronto courts. On top of that he seems to be playing well now. Let's see what he comes up with.

Nice one mug. Mug well tomorrow.

Hardly a mug today! or yesterday either. Who was that guy returning Isner's serve FROM THE BASELINE!? Very SMART, focused, positive attitude tennis from Richard all week and today I saw a Richard that has been MIA in singles for years. He was moving very well and his court position was :hearts:. Most impressive is the fact that he stuck to the aggressive plan almost the entire match (started to get a bit passive at end of match but held it together).

When Brad Gilbert, who loves to trash Richie, says he's impressed with Richard's game you know it had to be good.

Not expecting a win tomorrow but just hope he puts up a fight the entire match (like against Fish) and remembers what got him the win today.

Raonic first round in Cincy-good thing he had a warm up against bullet serves today.

What a wonderful tournament so far from Richard. I think after grass court season and especially after very disappointing Wimbledon loss to Mayer, this is such an adrenaline rush for his fans and hopefully for his own confidence. To be honest I did not even think he played his best overall this week, yet he fought through and achieved his best result in Masters in 6 years. The way he played against Isner should be a sign how he should return against anyone else. He was always pretty close to baseline, knowing that anything far back will get him crushed.. now why does he not return same way against lesser servers??? If he could pressure Isner into so many breakpoints, why not employ same strategy against say.. Baghdatis? Or Murray? Or Mayer?

He loves Toronto and I still remember the best two sets of tennis he ever played in Toronto, one of them was the first set against Roger where he really outplayed him in 2006 final first set and then when he won first set against Nadal, which was maybe the toughest set of tennis he ever won. Unfortunately, he lost both of those matches, but still, he is very capable of winning it tomorrow. It's a great result already and he could make something special tomorrow.

Obviously expected resultin the final. I kind of liked that he tried to slice some returns, but still he ended up a bit too far back to have a chance from baseline against Novak. I think he really needs to work on forehand aggressive return on second serves. He does not have that shot at all and it hurts him a lot. Other than that, Richard is poor on big points overall. He does not take enough chances. First game he had 0-40 and really the whole he was not a factor, Novak either missed or hit winner or forcing shot. Richard needs to take a lot more aggressive approach.

Gagsquet
08-13-2012, 01:32 AM

Novak was too strong for Richard.

Richard did win 80% 1st serves but only won like 29% 2nd serves. Richard was 0/4 on break points and had 3 in the very 1st game. Great week for Richard, he should take great confidence from this and take it to Cincinnati. I guess he will travel there tonight or tomorrow morning. He plays Tuesday.

Also Novak said some nice words about Richard in the presentation...... "Richard you deserve to win a Masters 1000...... He is one of the best talents we have in tennis and he deserves to be top 10"

If only Richard had better movement and speed, he looks so poor compared to Nole in that respected even if he is better than some on tour. Another aspect is gasquet has a tendancy to drop alot of balls midcourt, Nole is just gonna eat them up all day with his groundstrokes.

Richard looses 6/7 (4/7) 3-6 to Raonic.

Richard had his chances in the 1st set where he had 2 set points when Raonic was serving at 5-6, 15-40 down. Raonic took a 5-0 lead in the TB but Richard stucked in there. Raonic finally took the TB, 7 points to 4.

Richard DF to give the break away in the 2nd set, he saved a MP when serving to stay in the match at 2-5 down with a great FH winner. Raonic served it out after coming back from 0-30 down.

I thought Richard looked OK, not tired. Maybe if he took that 1st set, it could of been different. He plays doubles on Wednesday.

I thought Richard looked OK, not tired.
More mental than physical, I feel. With a bit more freshness he might have avoided those UEs in the breaker. I still liked what I saw on the return, though.

Anyway, I am not disappointed, I knew it would be tough today, just not enough time to recover. He is on the road since the Olympics. Benneteau was watching, I wish that these two can prolongue their doubles pleasure and then some days of rest befoer the US Open.

Tough draw in Cincy. He has his chances, but again his poor play on big points cost him the match. Now, in the last 2 matches, he is 0 for 7 in breakpoint chances. It is hard to win against good players with those numbers.

Richard has time now to practice and prepare for US Open. He needs to work on aggressive second serve returns and how to hit a shoulder high forehand deep, which he can't do and suffered a lot because of it against Raonic.

I'm there watching. Can't believe he's been playing like this against some mug... Getting slightly better though

Richard has been ultra passive for first half of the match. I just don't get it and never will. Pretty much all shots were on other guy's racket since he either missed a shot or made it. Richard was just there getting balls in play. This sort of tennis will get him 2-6, 2-6, 3-6 thrashing from Ferrer (if he gets that far). He was so far behind, often immediately after return, that he could not get to second shot often. He is playing nothing like he played in Toronto.

Second half of the match was better, but that also because other guy sort of went away completely. Richard did however hit couple forcing shots when he had a breakpoint so that's a good thing I guess.

IN my book, not results oriented I give him C+ at best for both matches so far.

Don't care until he make quarterfinal. Then I will be pleased and excited.

Good.

He is a win away from the CY(R16)GS. Playing the 245th in the world and having to play one of his worst nightmare in R16. That's almost in the bag...

Can't really hope for a QF except if Hewitt gets rid of Ferrer.

Allez Gasquet!!

Missed the 2nd half of the 2nd set and 3rd due to a wedding. How was he?

Gasquet has almost 0 chance to beat Ferrer, but would beat Tipsarevic quite easily, and against Isner or Roddick, he has a good chance too.

7/6 (7/4) 6/2 6/3 win over Johnson.

Richard was *0/4 down in the TB but he won the next 7 points. Good performance from Richard, he served well.

Ferrer next! :armed:

Some thoughts before Ferrer match... first of all, it was good effort to beat hard hitting Johnson. I think this was his best match in the tournament and his comeback in tiebreaker was good strong.

As far as Ferrer, I don't really hope for a win, but I wish to see a competitive match.. maybe win a set, which he never done when he lost to Ferrer. On clay this year against him, Richard played well and almost won a set. What I really don't want to see is something like in AO, with him mentally going away and not really fighting after couple sets. I want to see 7-5, 7-6 scores and as I said winning a set would already be an improvement.

As far as strategy, he must be more aggressive than against all of his opponents so far. He must serve really good, take chances on second serve returns. Slice some shots to Ferrer's backhand and then wait for shorter ball and attack. He won't ever win by defending, Ferrer will have to actually be beaten.

Well Crap! :help: Blew/choked away his best chance to win a set from Ferrer. What's the chance Ferrer gives RIchard 3 more break point chances at 5-6:rolleyes:.
EDIT - None.

Have a feeling the 3rd set is going to be REALLY UGLY!

The worst part is that he pushed really badly on all 4 SPs

Massive choke from Richard when he was up 5-2. He just stopped playing and he played so well in second set up to that point. He really really has no belief he can take Ferrer down.

Now, we'll see how much he wants to win a set, because I don't think down two sets, he has much chance to win the match. Still, overall this is one of his better 4th round matches he has played.

4 Set Points missed! Oh Richard!!

3rd SP, he didn't even make the return which he went long with on a 2nd serve!

Good first few games in the third. Playing aggressive again and had openings on Ferrer's serve. He has to play same way, otherwise no chance at all.

Rain Break atm.

Richard will get a little rest, ease his legs.

Like VLAD said, Richard has started the 3rd well.

So far he is playing the 3rd set much better than I thought - I expected a total collapse after pushing away his many chances in the 2nd. Ferrer does not look that great today, except he has a way of tightening up his game when it really matters.

Richard you have nothing to loose - when you get back just play EVERY point aggressively and let it fly.

Richard so far has been in every single service game of Ferrer in third set, had breakpoint at 3-3, but AGAIN, he played it passive and the ball machine named Ferrer won't miss. I hope he will take positives from this match and will realize that he CAN compete with 5th best player and even beat him if ONLY he plays it the right way, which is not the passive way.

OUT in the 4th round again!

Looses 5/7 6/7 (2/7) 4/6 against Ferrer!

2nd set was key where he served for the set and had 4 SP on the Ferrer serve when he served at 4/5 down.

Richard stayed in the 3rd mentally and played some good points and he was the first person to create the BP but again he was too passive on that point!4

Richard did save the first 4 MP, a couple of them with some great shots. Richard did have some GP but Ferrer's returns on them were great! Gasquet went long with a BH DTL on the 5th MP.

I think if Richard looks closely at how he played and how games went, I think he can take A LOT of positives from this match, even though he could have made it 4 or 5 setter.

Yeah, I agree with this. I thought Richard balanced attack and defence well during the rallies except on the break points where he was just defensive.

1st round wasn't great, improved in the 2nd round but Klahn was just going for it which he made errors with that tactic. In the 3rd Richard played well, coming back in the 1st set TB and against Ferrer, probably his best match of the tournament.

Richard talks about how he can play with the top 15 easily and maybe the top 10 as well. He was also upset that he lost the 2nd set, making mistakes on the set points (I hope he the word "mistakes" means being too passive). At the end he comments on how he's been on the road for 6 weeks and he feels physical fine.

I was on holiday and did not see a single match, but I followed the news. As nobody mentioned it so far, Richard had a severe gastritis at the start of the tournament played his first two matches living on rice alone.

I guess Richard will take about 10-12 days off and then start practicing for Bangkok which starts on the 24th of this month. Travel to Thailand about 5 days before the tournament starts!

He will play 3 back to back tournaments in Asia so it's important he's fit and fresh for that!

Richard's #12 in the Race for the World Tour Finals, he's about 600 odd points behind 8th place but he has a small shot. A title there and some big points in other tournaments would be handy but that's something for another day.

Allez! :)

Grosjean thinks Richard still has a good chance of reaching the World Tour Finals.

I guess we can use this thread for the next stretch of the season. I'm not quite sure why he's playing Umag on clay. Given that he's exhausted, he could use more rest...
