Basel final Nalbandian vs Novak, who will win?

Who will win the final between Nalbandian and Novak?

If David plays, he hasn't lost a match in 3 years at Basel, the walkover doesn't count.

They have never played before and as much as I want Nalbandian to win. I think Novak will.

David likes this tournament a lot, and I think he will win it. He needs a title!!!!
Well done for reaching the third final in a row here in Basel, and the second in a row this year! :yeah:

I wonder if this match will go 5 sets.

A big call maybe if David can win the first set, then I think he can win the title, but if he doesn't then the final blues might get a hold of him and the smiling Novak will come through.

I like them both. Novak already won at Tokyo and David won here in 2002. I already forgave him for beating Rainer , so lets' go David. Still i think Novak has the edge here.

I agree with you, I'm tired of him losing in finals. But this is Basel, he likes it there!

It doesn't matter if it was Jiri or Dave playing Henman, you know they would be the favourite. :)

No it wasn`t like the ghastly Schuettler match - I actually enjoyed this one :p And yes he does like it here and he is very popular and definately the crowd favourite which makes him very happy. He gave a lovely speech at the end of the match thanking all his team and his friends and supporters - almost made me cry :)

Thanks for the report Rosie, but I do see the old failing of not serving out the match the first time, it was fortunate that he had 2 breaks of serve.

Yes and he needed them - he had several break points against him to lose that second break of serve advantage - it was scary!! From what I have seen of Jiri this week he seems to get tense when serving out too - could make the match tomorrow interesting in a stressful kind of way

Jiri has won a title this year, something David hasn't. My Jiri Novak experience this year was when he was playing out of his mind and led Pavel 2 sets to love, and then Andrei came back and won in it 5.

David does have a good 5 set record, but that wouldn't be good for your heart though would it.

I`m preparing the hip-flask of vodka for my handbag now!!! Pity they don`t let you smoke in the auditorium - the Schuettler match was driving me crazy - I got through three bags of toffees because I couldn`t have a cigarette!

If you were bad I wonder how Dirk Hordorff (Rainer's coach) handled it, that guy can't help but smoke a lot and from the sounds of that match, it was one of those matches.

I like both a lot :)

I think Jiri will win it, because he is the kind of player who can clinch these matches. Sometimes he loses to a nobody, but some days he can beat everyone. And this week is full of such days :)

This is a very tough one to pick. David is in very good form, but forgets to play his best tennis in finals, though he has won this event before so that has to be of comfort to him.

Then there is the underrated Novak, he is always smiling and lurking around. He is tough to beat and doesn't give the match away and David will have to beat him as Novak won't give him any freebies.

I will go with David on the theory he has to win a final at some point soon.

This final is best-of-5 right? Didn't David take injury time-outs against Rainer yesterday? is he better?

I'm pretty indifferent to both players, so for the simple fact that David is a top 10 player and really should have a title more recently than 2 years ago, I hope he wins.

I feel sorry for david though - he deserves more titles and is doing a tremendous job in trying to reach Houston so kudos to him but I would like Jiri to win. David's time to dominate the tour will come...he is still young. If it weren't for his injuries this year he would probably be top 5 even top 3. Vamos David....al ano proximo! :)

I hope Nalbandian wins this one, but I am voting for Novak for obvious reasons. (We all no David's record in finals). Its his match to win or lose imo, and this is one of the few tournements where he has actually had success in finals, I hope it continues tomorrow.

David has a dismal finals record, Jiri is better rested (played one game less), and David is apparently injured at his toe, so my vote goes to Novak (as does some of the little vCash I still own)!
But I wouldn't mind Nalby winning at all!

Nalbandian looked a bit tired in the match against Schuttler and he tends to lapse in finals. But I still vote for him as he has gone through tight matches in Basel and hopfully that would help to regain confidence that he needs in the final. Maybe I just hope he wil win this.

That is so right and I agree with the closeness of the race and that is a good thing.

Onto the match today, it's fortunate that I like both players and therefore I won't be upset at whoever wins the title. For the TMC race for David's poor finals record I would like him to win here again, but Novak shouldn't underestimated and I have a feeling he will be making the victory speech today.

He is in a lot less pain than he was on Friday, but still far from 100% fit. He says he is fine, but I honestly don`t know if that is the truth or just typical male bravado :) He is hardly likely to say otherwise because that would give Jiri more confidence and put David at a disadvantage in the mental side of the game. I like Jiri a lot, but of course I want David to win - I am tired of seeing him lose in finals  He loves Basel and the crowd are generally supporting him here because they know how much he loves their tournament. I`m just praying for him to win this time.

I like both players but would like David to win yet until he proves he can handle the pressure of a final it is hard to pick him against what appears to be a very confident Novak. According to him he played some of the best tennis of his life against Koubek after being down a break in the 1st and if he continues with that form I think he will win.

Good effort from both players but it's too bad David had to be so catty at the end. The commentators even joked he'd get booed from the stadium if he didn't clean up his act - broke 2 racquets, got a warning, and even a point penalty for getting up slowly :o Too bad it had to end that way, it was really time for him to get a title
