An evenly poised match has been ended.

With Nalbandian taking the opener in a tie-break, after losing serve twice, Nalbandian bounced the racquet around and finally hurt an official kicking a chair and cutting his leg with Cilic leading 4-3 with a break on serve.

It was an accident, but Nalbandian clearly deserved the default. He was angered by a point and went to kick the board by a linesperson's feet. The boards shattered and hit the linesperson's ankle/shin, causing the poor man to have to get his ankle wrapped and hobble off the court.

Totally deserved ruling. For Nalbandian to be that aggressive THAT close to a linesman was simply dangerous and idiotic. Deserved.

A real shame for everyone including the crowd.

Absolute Anthropoid
06-17-2012, 03:51 PM
Fuck both my picks lose today and of course Nalbandians rage caused this one

What happened was that Nalbandian broke back to make it 3-3 in the 2nd set and then was broken to love I think. He smashed his racquet and threw it minutes after. He was pretty mad and then when he was broken he kicked the stand in anger and accidentally hit a linesman.

agree in a way. He certainly did not hurt the guy intentionally, but since he did, the only way to handle this properly is disqualification.

Any further action following this misbehavior of David is imo unnecessary, but since the ATP likes making an example of people who aren't in the top 4... (remember, Djokovic broke the chair in the RG final)

Nalbandian was never actually aiming for the linesman but it was still stupid to kick the sign when there's a linesman sitting right behind it.

Bizarre.

Well it's a little bit harder for them. A) They probably didn't see or understand what happened. They don't get a replay and the umpire never explained to them. Watching a relay would help. B) They're paying to be in attendance at the match. C) The match was a good one they want to see finished.

Mostly I think the crowd was confused. Really, an official should explain to them very clearly and matter-of-factly why Fat Dave was justifiably defaulted.

Bad luck is when you slip and hurt your ankle or wrist. This is not bad luck, more like stupid behaviour. Disqualification was the only proper solution.

he didn't know where he was, he just kicked and could have been anywhere else (that's different from Djokovic who was in control of himself when he kicked the chair although I don't mean it deserved a disqualifying), then it's bad luck in my book.

It's a horrible way to end the tournament and nobody wants to win a title under such circumstances but rules really have to be set firmly in stone. Especially concerning the safety of officials on the court. Intentional or not, it's just unacceptable.

Ridiculous to see people hating on David so much here. It's a mistake, a lot of players show their frustrations on court, and this one had a bad consequence. A lot of players smash their rackets, and they only get a warning and no one hates them for that, but if the racket jumps off the court and hits someone, according to most of you it would mean the one who threw it is an idiot. :silly:

Andrew Castle is a pleb. If his beloved Nadull or Murray did it he'd find an excuse.

Andrew Castle isn't much of a Rafa fan, IMO. He kisses the asses of all the top players (of course) but prefers Fed and Nole over Nadal.

You are such a hypocrite

it was an old man, of course he felt it more.

if it was a R1 or R2 match, fair enough. but a final, when nalbandian is already winning... too much. this isn't to say that nalbandian isnt to blame, his actions were idiotic, and from someone who's been on tour for such a long time, you wouldn't expect this type of shit.

Stop trolling man, you can't kick or throw something and hit an official.

lol he had to be blind to not see the linejudge.I don't really get why some people are searching for excuses to this behaviour. He fucked up and there was no other choice than to default him imo.

it's not an excuse, it's a fact : I know I'm prefectly able to do what he did without thinking/seeing one second the line judge (oh yes "see" by the eyes, but wouldn't go to the brain, sorry I'm also able of quick reactions like that )

Can't believe how someone can hold this against Cilic... It's Nalbandian who is to blame here and only him!

If I was at Marin place losing a match, hoping for a second set...Id talk to supervisor to let him play....but thats me...I couldnt accept something I didnt earn....but I dont hold this against Marin...

I can't express this strongly enough. Your opponent should not be able to win a tournament if you kick an umpire. That is just not fair. Cilic did nothing to win the tournament. You can't exist on the court and do nothing and win

OK so what's the limit? What unacceptable behaviour ? Would killing a linesman with a deft kick in the neck warrant a disqualification ?

The Queens crowd cheered David, they didn't boo him. They booed the decision and booed Sue Barker
Not a surprise. These monyebags wanted to see some action.
