Olympic tennis tournament draw should be expanded to 128 players

What do you think? Then this way, almost every country gets represented. Because a 64 player draw is not enough.

It would better reflect the importance of the event, but perhaps the IOC imposes a limit to the number of participating athletes, given there are already 5 events. Also they probably don't want tennis to take over 2 weeks of the Games as interest in other sports would seriously suffer.;)

Could not agree more.
The Olympics are 2 weeks long. Why not have a two week long tournament like at a major?
I'm surprised nobody has opened this topic yet.

Players like Verdasco would not get denied entry because there are 4 better players from his country.

I also think they should offer at least 1000 ranking points to the winner.

Olympic tennis is 1 week, it's not as prestigious as a Slam and never will be. It's only in the games so the IOC can get more cash.

I also think they should scrap the ranking points as well because next year the points are taken off and it completely changes the ranking outlook.

It should be 3000 points.
Slam= 2000+ money
Olympics= 3000 points + no money

but ATP is al about money and thats why they put it on lower possible level of event

no prestige in this tournament, 128 draw will be just a waste of time

nobody gives a shit about this mickey mouse tournament

128, 4 rounds is too much. Having "4 GRAND SLAM" draws within a 4 month period surely wouldn't sit well with the players

06-17-2012, 01:26 AM
they should keep 64 player draw but play best of 7 set matches instead

I think there should be no ranking points on the line here as the qualification criteria are not the same from country to country. It seems reasonable but probably will never happen.

i think what it is already good. a 128 draw is too big and would happen in two weeks. That is too much adjustment to the calendar. The limit to 4 is good, as you dont want the Olympics to look like Olympics feat. Spaniards. The only thing is the NOC rules, the ITF Olympic Committee have already set the rules and NOC should not bother thinking they are better than the ITF.

a 128 draw with a greater global spread of players would at least give a novel Olympic feel to the tournament (or the early rounds at least before all the lower-ranked mugs were knocked out).

right now it feels like just another tennis event. nothing special about it at all.

you could give byes to the top seeds to stop them bitching (byes in the Olympics are nothing new - see boxing).

thats way too many people; things are fine as they are, its not like the 90% of the current players stand a chance at the medal anyway.

They should do a RR with the top 16 players or, even better, the top 8, where the real chance of getting any medal is.

and the sad part of this post is that im dead serious about it :o

Maybe a 96 draw? Or an 80 draw.
