Andy Murray: "I’ve just got no chance to be ready for Wimbledon now"

He was joking, of course. :p Here's the full quote:

Asked if the second-round defeat was a cause for concern, Murray, his voice dripping with sarcasm, joked: “Oh, panic stations.

“I’ve just got no chance to be ready for Wimbledon now. It’s going to be impossible, I think.”

So Murray was not too worried by the loss of his title or the manner of his defeat and said: “There is no need for me to panic.

“I lost the match in the third set 7‑6 in the first round of the tournament. It takes a bit of time to adjust to the grass courts.”

In fact it took him most of the first set to trust his footing on the lush, sappy grass.

With both men slipping and sliding all over the court the more tentative Murray’s movement became.

He said: “I didn’t move very well at the start of the match and then I started to move better. I don’t think it all went wrong. It was a very close match.

“I thought losing serve at the beginning of the third set after breaking him was probably not great. That got him back into the match.

“Then I missed probably about four shots on the tape and a roll in a tiebreak. They were probably the bits that didn’t help.”

I try to cheer for him, but Murray sucks.

Its not that he doesn't win grand slams, its how he acts and how hes seemingly regressing

Murray should focus on winning a 250 on clay instead of things he will never achieve.

Nothing to see here. Murray may as well not play Wimbledon if the goal is winning. He ain't winning it. Move on

“I thought losing serve at the beginning of the third set after breaking him was probably not great."

That's the kind of tennis insight I expect from a top 4 player.

Andy Murray has the attitude of John McEnroe, with the game of Brad Gilbert.

Murray just doesn't take tennis seriously.

Or rather, not as serious as te Top 3 do. Mentally, those guys are simply on another level than Murray. And now guys like Tsonga and Berdych are closing in on Murray too.

murray is having a very bad year, i didnt think he will win a slam but i thought he will do better, he is losing way to much esp in the first rounds.

he can forget wimby, all that pressure and he will have to win 2 of the top players in an Optimistic scenario that he will reach it..

Murray is not Having a bad year in the slams though. SF in Australia and a QF at his worst slam is not too bad.

he should have win novak in AO, he had the game for it and half of the season is gone and he won just a small title in Brisbane, and that was 6 months age.
the n4 in the world in my eyes needs to play better

Andy is a witty fellow. Double tricked the reporters by giving the impression that he was joking, but actually meaning what he said.

British press deserve more sarcasm to be thrown at them.

A week of tennis now is just what Murray doesn't need anyway. Skipped Madrid, probably should have skipped Rome too, the back was clearly still an issue there. Needs to start taking care of himself more - he's always just played through injurires, and got lucky there have been no more consequences.

Not that he was ever going to win it anyway....

May I just point out to all the cleverclogs that he didn't say anything about being unable to win, he said (sarcastically) that he had no chance TO BE READY TO PLAY.

I see Tsonga has just gone out in his second match - he at least had experience of one match here.

So people are hating him on him because he seemingly "doesn't take tennis seriously"?

Don't make me laugh, you fools

Andy takes tennis very seriously but there's nothing wrong with having a laugh at your own expense at times. He knew the loss was bad but instead of whining and saying how terrible it was he made a little joke out of it. Nothing wrong with that, you fools

Murray isn't quite at the level of Nadal or Djokovic now. Oddly enough, this is true for the rest of the field as well. Will he be able to take it to that insane of a level? I hope so. But I don't think so. I don't think he can beat those guys now. But I don't think anyone else can either.

But they can't play at this level forever. At every slam. Murray will have his chance. He's not that far from these guys (as he proved at AO12 agains Djokovic).

"Breaking through" is hard. Much of this is mental for Andy (injuries aside obviously). If he can do it once, he'll do it more than once.

He'll most likely be back in the semis as usual- slower grass means less mines in the draw. This applies to the top 3 also.

Jo and Berdych are the only guys capable of stopping 1-4 occupying the SF spots.

:worship: I am so glad he was able to poke fun at himself about that loss and not be boring and say the usual disappointment speech.
It's good to laugh at yourself now and again. I just hope he practices enough to get used to the grass and that he will put the last few months behind him and focus on Wimbledon and especially the London Olympics
