Scoreline says it all. Lleyton was brutally poor, but Ivo played a great match, hit some awesome forehand returns and forehands from the baseline. 22 aces and only four points lost on first serve. Lleyton served badly, didn't move very well and didn't show very much commitment, very flat performance, which is surprising to see from him.

Pretty embarrassing scoreline considering how bad Dr. Ivo has been. Hewitt must be playing at about 10%.

With Hewitt's game, when he's losing baseline rallies to Ivo Karlovic it's a serious time to contemplate retirement unless he's confident that he can play better.

Karlovic peaking for grass? He was injured on his shoulder right, couldn't serve fully at RG?
Or was it precaution?

22 aces from Dr. Ivo, his first serve looked amazing

Sad to watch Rusty like this. This guy was once #1 and now he's being manhandled by Karlovic from the baseline

I really hope he can regain some form and have a good ending to his career, this was pretty horrible.

Pretty embarrassing scoreline considering how bad Dr. Ivo has been. Hewitt must be playing at about 10%.

Ivo had a shoulder injury during clay season, now his shoulder is better and it's grass season so nothing embarrassing about it.

At 1-1 40:30 in first set on Karlovic serve. Ivo has played 9 points after serve (100 % first serve) and look how !

He won 7 of them by 7 aces. And the 2 he lost was 2 return winners from Hewitt. Impressive tennis :)

Hope he will be in decent form for Olympics, he can make some upset there, Wimbledon also he can make some upset, but it is best of 5, it is much easier for guy like Ivo to win match in 2 tie- breaks insteda of 3 - not even mentioning 5th set no tie-break rule. But for sure he will most dangeorus unseeded guy and top guys will be watching where his name will land after draw ceremony.

Hewitt had a bit of a nightmare out there today, hopefully he'll put in a much improved performance next time he hits the court. He needs to get more court time under his belt.

Ivo served huge, gave Hewitt no rhythm and was clinical at the net. Good showing from the big man.

Was there ever any doubt? Karlovic's first serve is the most potent weapon in men's tennis history.

Even today, give his first serve to any top 50 player and you have the new world #1

Yes Ivo´s 1st serve is biggest weapon in tennis history, but even today - his serve looked great but still, few years ago he can hit the same spots-lines- aces - but add 10mph at least to that. His 1st is clearly slower, but on grass - quicker grass early rounds Queens-Wimby-olympics, he didn´t need to serve bombs, just hit the spots-lines, with less pace and it is service winner at least.

Hewitt was not amused:

"Yeah, it was frustrating, to say the least," Hewitt said. "It doesn't give you a chance to do a lot of things. You can't assess where you're at at the moment. You know, I can't assess my movement. Yeah, so it's just a frustrating day, all up."

I always thought Ivo had good volleys. I mean in the past he could really rely on that serve but even then he was still a solid volleyer. How many times have we seen even top guys buckle under pressure in important moments and mess up easy volleys, especially Federer.

Mark Lenders
06-12-2012, 10:50 PM
Ivo's volleys are quite good. The problem is his return/ground game, which is the worst I've ever seen from a top 50 player. Once the rally starts, Ivo will lose 95 out of 100 against ATP players.

And he has the worst break % in ATP history since stats are documented (1991) with only 9%.

He also has the best 1st serve points won and hold % though, which shows how incredible his serve, namely first serve, is.

samanosuke
06-12-2012, 10:57 PM
Karlovic's first serve is too fast for good net positioning and if he slows down a little he gets a missile under feet. atp mafia must be thrilled when they see how they ruined a game

Karlovic's seventh straight set vs Hewitt on grass.

I'm surprised this match up hasn't been mentioned more. Karlovic is 4-1 versus Hewitt (3-0 on grass including Hewitt as world number two) with the Australian only barely scraping by him at Roland Garros, Karlovic was up 2 sets to love in that match and the third went to a tiebreaker.

Exactly and combined with his lack of match practice he wouldn't have expected to get very far, just unlucky that he drew Ivo in the first round. I think he's just trying to get enough form to play in the September Davis Cup tie against Germany. I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire after the AO
