Nice match overall from Milos. Had some loose play, but he dictated proceedings with his weapons and served well. 19 aces, 72% first serves. Hit some good returns but missed a few too many. Milos played his best the end of both sets, and especially the tiebreaker, where he was awesome.

Picasso played pretty well, but made some critical mistakes at inopportune times which cost him and didn't serve at a high enough percentage.

Raonic awesome on serve. Petzschner was able to hold almost all service games but made a mess of one when trying to get to the tiebreak.

Milos will be dangerous on grass.

Raonic needs to get a better feel for his return and BH on grass, but other than that it was a good performance.

not kamke. Chinese qualifier zhang

Perfect tiebreak from Milos. Nothing Picasso could really do. His confidence level is shit right now and it shows in the important moments of the match.

awful tiebreak from picasso

Well not much he could do. Raonic served 4 aces (including 1 on 2nd serve) and came up with a couple of great returns.

Oh wow, lucky break probably for Milos.

Good to see Milos get by Petzschner like this. He's given him some problems in the past (including last year at Halle). I don't anticipate Zhang will provide much of a challenge, so this should set up that QF match against Federer. Perhaps third time will be the charm against him.

The golden rule holds - when in RF's part of the draw, play your guts out. When with RN, lose the round before. Splendid.

looking forward how Raonic will prevail if he faces Fed on grass.

get put in RN's draw when its clay
get put in RF's draw when its a surface that suits player

Petz could have done a better job exposing Milos movement, that's what he needed to do to win.

yeah, thats how he beat milos last year here. But his confidence is at zero right now. He also needed to serve better and he would have had a chance

Good post.

But overall a bit disappointing were the returns of Raonic (how you said as well.)

Raonic still needs more game.

And better movement on return.
Better anticipation.

Then he'll no doubt be in Roger's half, along with Djokovic, Del Potro, Tsonga, Berdych, and Isner.

I see Milos is playing doubles with Shamasdin this week. Is that Olympic-related or something?

Regardless, I'm not sure how good of an idea that is. He's gotten hurt twice in the past year playing doubles, hope it doesn't happen again.

With his serve, Raonic will be a tough costumer during this grasscourt season, namely at Wimbledon. He'll be drawn against a top 8 player in R4 at Wimbledon, when the courts are still relatively fast. Should be interesting, hopefully it's Murray he's drawn against. I'm trusting that he will beat the 13-16 seed he'll be drawn against in R3.

Can't wait to see his match with Federer here at Halle in a few days.

I don't think he hurt himself playing doubles in either case. The first he clearly had a bit of knee pain going on which when combined with a shoddy scan kept him out of the 3rd singles match, and the other one he twisted an ankle practicing and simply retired quickly in his doubles match. With very limited grass court play, playing doubles makes a ton of sense.

I'm happy with this. I really like Milos.
Fed is lucky to play vs Milos, facing a big server so soon it's amazing if he wants to go deep in Wimb.

Not really, he just stood at the baseline and ripped forehands, exactly the same as he does on every other surface.
There was one point where Petzsch hit about 15 slice backhands to Milos, and Milos kept trying to rip the forehand...and finally hit ONE slice backhand.
... then Petzsch drop shotted him and won the point
Ridiculous amount of slices from Picasso.

Feel bad for Petzschner, has been bad lately even at doubles, didnt he get injured somewhere along the year, if i am not mistaken.
I am still not impressed with Raonic, his currently a very one-dimensional player. Wonder if he draws Isner in the third and it goes to a fifth how long will that be.

Is beating someone 5 and 6 really "routining" them? Wouldn't a "routine" win be more like 6-2, 6-3 or something like that?

Yes, but I don't think the OP was being serious, however this is a typical scoreline for a Milos match, he usually is clutch when it matters most, so it's routine for him.

Milos may seem one dimensional to some because his serve is so good. I don't think he is about to neuter it to induce more rallies and please baseliner fans. If you've got it, use it. He has showed great touch at net, a great forehand and his 2 handed backhand is improving. For a big man his reflexes are also impressive. No he will never be a mover like a Rafa, Hewitt, etc. Why should he be its not what he is built for. Tennis needs players with contrasting styles to make for intriguing match ups. Its even more important with the death of the full time serve and volleyer that we have young players like Milos come on the scene. We have enough speedy grinder types on tour. I see him at best cracking the top 8 and maybe even winning Wimbledon or the U.S. open in 5 years if he is hot and lucky with a draw opening up. Roddick and Krajicek did so why not. He will never win RG unless Uncle Tony starts coaching him. He's 21 years old and still improving. If his first serve% is 75% like today it will give anyone trouble on grass.

Well he does have a spanish coach and does train on clay at least in the offseason, if not when he's not at tourney's too, so maybe there is a very tiny chance, never say never.

It seems people forget he also has probably the best 2nd serve in the game too, so missing the 1st isn't such a big deal, it's also how many PTS he wins on serve that counts more that the %.
