Federer has still taken the most games off Nadal in a French Open final...

Djokovic vs Nadal 2012 6–4, 6–3, 2–6, 7–5

4 + 3 + 6 + 5 = 18 games for Djoker

Nadal vs Federer 2011 7–5, 7–6(7–3), 5–7, 6–1

5 + 6 + 7 + 1 = 19 games for Fed

So question is, which final do you think was closer? 2011 or 2012?

Federer was losing NID no matter if the match had gone to 5 sets, at least Nole has things going in his racket, but he has to play perfect against Nadal on this surface.

Guess what he took the biggest beatdown from Nadal in a RG as well.

Very very very important statistic.

Nadal had to be rescued by rain delay this year.

That 4th set is the only relevant statistic.

There was never a point in the Federer match when I thought he could win.
As Djokovic was blowing Nadal off the court for a bit, I of course considered the fact that he might be able to keep it up enough to win. So this year, I'd say.

Fed was never going to beat nadull at RG even at 2 sets 5 -40 up. Nadull needed the rain and cheating from the Don Toni to secure the win against nadull at RG. Luck has always been Nadulls stronghold , for not getting caught even till this day.

The difference is the 4th set.

Actually, if it wasn't for the rain, Nole would never have won that 3rd set, at least not win it 6-2, because of the rain, the ball didn't bounce as high off the ground as it did before the rain, if last year FO final had the same conditions as this year final, Roger would have had an even better chance...

If I recall correctly, Fed didn't lose after being a break up, or DF when facing matchpoint. ;)

Nole played a terrible match with the worst serve this entire year. It's a wonder he took Nadal to 4 sets. Fed would be hard pressed to play better clay match than last year though. He had his chances and fucked them up.

Yep, you gonna give it to Fed. He had no mental lapses in that 4th set.

There was a sense of NID with Federer-Nadal final last year, even if the first three sets were close and could have gone either way. Once Fed failed at that DS on set pt, there was the sense that this was going to be another painful choke...
Not the same with Nadal-Djokovic, but Fedal quality was actually greater last year  It was actually a good match, though not the result I wanted.

IMO, The one time Federer genuinely had a shot at Nadal was in 2006 when he outplayed him in the first set only to go away in the next two sets. The pressure of 4 in a row and his H2H against Nadal was clear for all to see.

Federer vs Djokovic against Nadal on clay:

Federer-Nadal 2-12

sets:13-32 (29%)

Djokovic-Nadal 2-12

sets:8-27 (23%)

Compltely irrelevant, you dont meassure players for how low they can sink but how high they can reach and most of all on their avarage result.

Federer took sets from Nadal in 10 out of 14 matches, 4 out of 5 matches in Roland Garros.

Djokovic in 6 out of 14 matches on clay, 1 our of 4 matches in Roland garros.

Everybody wears the pink dress when they play against Nadal on clay.

Gaston Gaudio remains the only man to beat Nadal more than twice on clay - did it three times.

2011 was the better final.

Federer did better of course.

Djokovic could only come back when the court was wet and Nadal couldn't move.

2011 final was closer at the beginning, but this year's final was closer at the end.

Difference is the level at which Rafa was playing. In 2011 he was shit throughout, and Fed could keep it reasonably close because of that. In 2012 Nadal was playing great, and only got worse against Djokovic. Meaning Novak was the reason of that, and full credit to him for taking a Nadal, in beast form, to a tight 4th set. I rate Djokovic's performance much higher.

The question is, can Novak keep it up for years to come as Federer did?

Do we need poll and question here? FEderer was playing maybe his best RG last year, serving like Karlovic with those quicker balls, but when he choked - lost that 1st set you knew it is over, no way Federer will win now 3 sets in row - and honestly nobody believed him in 5 sets on clay vs Rafa.

Djokovic was down 2-0 on sets, but when he take command in 3rd set, even leading in 3rd set - still score was 2-0 for Nadal and Nole playing-serving much better - with break up in 3rd and Rafa tards were scared and honestly everyone was thinking is this guy going to turn this match in his favour?

So about closenes - Federer´s match was maybe closer on paper - but that was, becaus eof his serve, but generally when he lost 1st set it was over, Nole being 2-0 down on sets and still he was looking he can win it.

2012 was closer, Nole serving better at the beginning and not DF´s on BP-MP and he would be the champion.

I forgot level 2012 - Rafa was broken 1x in 6 matches before F, in F super-dominant Nadal lost set, looked vulnerable and was broken don´t know - 5-6-7x ....

2011-Rafa was playing at lower level than this year.

It is pretty much equal. both 4 sets. it is not like Djoker could push Nadal to the brink of defeat or something.
