This is it. The match many of us have been waiting for - Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal at the Final of Roland Garros.

In one corner, the World No. 1 who is attempting to become the first man since Rod Laver to hold all four majors at the same time. In the other, the man who is seeking a record seventh Roland Garros title.

When the red dust settles, who will lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires?

GSMnadal

Records are about to get smashed in this one, 7th Roland Garros for the King of Clay? Or a Nole Slam for Djokovic, and keeping the CYGS dream alive?

My pick? Nadal in 3 hard fought sets, 6-4 7-5 6-2.

Vamos Clay Warrior the Great

Unleash your fury.

Have your revenge.

Make us proud.

Well, it terms of form and quality in this tournamnet there is only one winner Mr Nadal. Djokovic however has won last 3GS finals Vs Nadal. Djoke has become to Nadal, what nadal was to Federer.

If Nadal loses...boyyyyyyyy i'd say that would be a crisis for Rafa, but I think he'll get the W in 4 sets...if it did go to a 5th though i'd favor Djokovic who has the edge mentally.

federereeeeeeesian missionaries lining up like clueless cowards now. they rooted against their player for one reason and one reason alone:

they did not want nadal to get close to fed`s 16 slams. pathetic. they ditch their player in times of need. they actually believe that nole has a chance to beat the clay warrior.

well now the real torment begins: clay warrior will sieze the mental edge in slams after destroying nole.

Nadal will win this match in straight sets. Nadal has been simply superb all tournament and looks unstoppable. Djokovic in contrast has looked shaky , almost going out to seppi, and then facing match points against Tsonga (on Tsonga's worst surface). In many ways Djokovic could've done with a tougher match today as Federer was terrible, to see where he really is at game wise on this surface and in these conditions. But this is not Djokovic 2.0. Nadal will get No. 7.

Novak has a slim chance here, but he still has it. If he happens to win it will probably be a grueling 5 setter.

In this match, I predict at least one set will be 6:1 won by Nadal.

Anyways I voted Nadal in 4, but will root for Novak of course. I am happy he made finals, it's still better than the last year. Winning would be huge but I must say I don't expect it at all - although it's not impossible.

Djokovic will bring everything to land career grandslam and non-calendar grandslam. Novak in 4. I don't care how laughable it is, I am sticking with it

Nadal has not been battle tested, physically and mentally. He cruised all the way to final. We know that Nole will have a say in Nadal's service games, especially if Nadal's serve percentage drops off. Only the best will do for Djokovic and basically execute the gameplan. Matchup wise he has all the tools to beat Rafa, even on the red clay.

Nole Rules

I think the 1st set will be very crucial for Nole. If Nole wins it, the match will go to 5 IMO and he will have his chances. But if Rafa wins the first set, he will win the other too easily.

Exactly. The way Nadal has been playing (and destroying clay court specialists (well the surface their game suits most) Monaco, Almagro and Ferrer) in straight sets, the only hope Djokovic has is to dig exceptionally deep and play a gruelling long match and hope Nadal's backhand breaks down. But I just don't see it happening. Nadal has looked too good. No. 11 GS coming up.

He won't take this lightly. I expect him to be as focused as we've ever seen him. If he truly believes, he will demolish Djoker in a very lopsided win. But I can see nerves and doubts making one or two of the sets more competitive than they should be.

Those of you thinking Djoker can compete with Rafa on this surface are reading way too much into last year. 2012 Rafa is more like his 2008/2010 incarnation, and at this level there is no one who can beat him at RG.

Precisely. Last year would have been legendary. This year, not so much.

Djokovic will prefer these courts over the abnormality that is Rod Laver arena. If he can play 6 hours to beat Nadal on those courts he can beat Nadal here.

Djokovic is going to have a very hard time winning points against Nadal. This surface is much more suited to Nadal's game than Djokovic.

You guys are all overestimating Novak's clay court prowess. He almost lost to Tsonga for crying out loud. Nadal would have demolished Tsonga in straights.

Again, the only way Sunday's final is remotely competitive is if Nadal simply crumbles under the pressure and Djoker plays the match of his life. Even then, Nadal will probably still win this.

Nadal is arguably the best clay court player in history playing at close to his best level. No one is beating him. I'm glad you all think the final is going to be interesting, but it most likely won't be.

Records are about to get smashed in this one, 7th Roland Garros for the King of Clay? Or a Nole Slam for Djokovic, and keeping the CYGS dream alive?

My pick? Nadal in 3 hard fought sets, 6-4 7-5 6-2.

Novak has a GREAT chance to win this thing if he brings his B+ game. Nadal is afraid because he knows this is no Federer who rolls into a fetal position at the first sign of opposition. No, this is the steel balled serbian slayer.

Nadal will now face a hungry, motivated player who has dominated him at slams lately, and a player who does not fear him AT ALL.

The steel balled one will take this in 4.

Make us proud Novak!

I agree. It's the final I wanted. I don't want Nadal to be gifted his 7th RG. I want him tested and I hope Novak brings his "A" game and does just that. I also don't want Nadal going mental midget (like he did at last year's Wimbledon) and gifting Novak the grand slam.

Simply put. May the best player win. And if we are treated to a 5+ hour marathon repeat of the Australian, sweet. I'll be up at 6AM PST and loving every minute of it.

Not going to happen. Federer ran into the same problem Nole is going to have trying to get that elusive RG title.

Welcome to Roland Garros and Nadal-world where you are doing well if you aren't getting embarrassed by Clay Warrior.

Nadal hasn't lost a single set on red clay this year, and you think Novak is going to win three of them in one day with the RG title hanging in the balance? There's a better chance Nadal gets struck by lightning.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, he won the last two encounters we had on clay in finals in Monte‑Carlo and Rome. Everything counts. I did have a little strange circumstances in Monte‑Carlo. But look, you know, I’m not looking for excuse. He was a better player.

You know, things change at this level, as I said. You know, I didn’t expect to win every match till the end of our careers against him, even though I won what, six, seven in a row?

But I won against him on clay last year two times back to back in eight days, and that’s something that is back of my mind. That’s something that can give me confidence, you know, I can think of when I step on the court with him on Sunday.

But obviously it is different because now it’s best‑of‑five. He has lost what, two matches in his career here? So that’s ‑‑ or one? (Laughter.)

That says enough, I mean, about his quality on this court. I lost to him I think here I think maybe three times. I haven’t won a set against him in this court. You know, all the facts are on his side.

But, look, you know, I feel different nowadays. I believe I’m at the peak of my career. I’m playing the best tennis of my life in last year and a half, and I should use that, you know. I should use that as a confidence boostance [sic] and try to get my hands on title. Why not?

I have won against a great player today. First time I find myself on Sunday in Paris. Let’s see what I can do.

Q. Roger Federer said that Rafa was clearly the favorite for the final. Do you agree?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I just mentioned all the facts, so you can say that he’s a favorite, definitely.

It’s a final, so, again, I think it’s unpredictable what’s going to happen because we are top two players, and we have played so many times last year and a half in so many finals.

He is a favorite because of all the facts that we just mentioned. But I believe in myself. I think I have a chance.

Q. What’s the difference between, say, controlling a match and points on grass and hard courts against Rafa than it would be on clay, which you’ve done a very good job with obviously on the other surfaces?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yeah, because here you get an extra ball back. It’s a slower conditions, which obviously suits him better. The ball bounces a bit higher for his topspin that he plays, you know, on this surface. It works at his advantage.

But between, you know, I think the conditions on the center court here in Roland Garros maybe comparing to other clay court events that we have, like Monte‑Carlo or maybe Rome, I think they are a little bit faster.

So that can maybe work in my favor. But you can always expect him to play on a very high level, you know. He doesn’t have much flaws in his game on this surface, so I need to step on the court believing I can win.

I mean, that’s the only way really I am aware of the differences in the surface. But I’ll try to make ‑‑ to have a right mindset and believe.

I like his attitude. :yeah:

Mac & Martina: Is Djokovic feeling pressure?
Ticker - Friday, June 8, 2012

Multiple Grand Slam title winners John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova discuss whether Novak Djokovic is feeling pressure at Roland Garros in his attempt to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win four straight majors. Djokovic plays Roger Federer in the semifinals on Friday.

"Novak I think is really feeling the pressure like he did last year," said McEnroe in reference to Djokovic coming into his 2011 French Open semifinal against Federer with a 43-match winning streak; he ended up losing the match. "It's impossible not to feel that because he's so close....I have been around enough big occasions, I know that's gotta start to get to you a little. It did obviously when he played [Andreas] Seppi. It was like he really was struggling. Even against Jo [Wilfried Tsonga] it wasn't maybe as sharp as we've seen him. That's not unexpected. Now that he's gotten here, I expect him to play better. Even though he lost to Roger here last year, it's going to be Roger that's going to have to step up and play even quite a bit better in order to win...There's nothing obviously better than the chance of doing something that hasn't been done for 43 years and getting four majors in a row. So that alone makes it almost impossible to play as well as you can, because the pressure alone and the expectation to have to be able to do that and execute it is almost impossible."

While McEnroe won seven majors, he only managed to win Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles across all four majors. She won six straight majors between 1983 and 1984, starting with 1983 Wimbledon. She won her fourth straight crown in that period by crushing Chris Evert 6-3, 6-1 in the1984 French Open final. Five-time Grand Slam titlist Djokovic is attempting to do much the same.

"Pressure is off him now for sure getting to the semis," she said. "The pressure was on him against Tsonga and he played well enough to win at the end. Played amazingly when his back was to the wall with the match points. The pressure was on him to get to this stage. Now if he loses to one of these guys, it's okay. But different kind of pressure from last year. Last year he comes here unbeaten, and I think that cost him in the semis. I think he was nervous about it. Now he's going to be the four slams in a row, which hasn't been done since '69. As we say, pressure is a privilege, and he earned it. So I think he'll play his best tennis now because the pressure is off. It's going to take an amazing effort from Federer to beat him. But in the finals, I think pressure is off for Djokovic. If he gets there—presuming Nadal wins—he’s playing the best clay‑court player ever, so he can go for broke even if it is going for four in a row. But it's amazing, isn't it? I mean, nobody can be counted is as a favorite against Nadal on clay no matter what the ranking is."

Since his loss to Federer last year, Djokovic has won 27 straight Grand Slam matches, matching Federer for second place on the Open era list. Another win would give Djokovic the non-calendar-year Grand Slam, and if he were to follow that with a win in the first round of Wimbledon, he would share the win-streak record with Rod Laver, the last man to win the four biggest tournaments in a row.

Ok, everybody knows that he is a favorite, but behind predictions - 3-0, demolition, struggle for each few games... I see fear, and anger... you all knows who is Novak Djokovic, what is he capable to do when nobody gives him a chance.

Think twice before you post your knee-jerking posts, Sunday may turn and bite you like never before.

If you really think Nadal will roll over Djokovic you will get surprised man

There's a small chance it's competitive - again, nerves, doubts, etc will all likely play into the first set or two. As a tennis fan, I hope for that - a competitive match (as a Nadal fan, I hope for a demolition job).

The likely scenario is that Nadal runs Novak off the court. Unlike at the Australian (where Nadal almost still won), Novak does not have any advantages he can rely on here. This court is tailormade to Nadal's game and he simply isn't going to lose. The match will only be as hard as Nadal makes it on himself as he battles nerves and any remaining self doubt. It's entirely on his racket and if he plays to his full potential, Novak is going to get squashed.

Simply looking at the numbers and not seeing any other way the match can go. This isn't hard courts and this isn't Nadal struggling with his confidence. Taking the last slams and using them to predict this one is comparing apples and oranges.

If I'm wrong and Djoker wins on Sunday, I'll put in my signature "I'm an idiot, I gave Nole no chance at RG 2012".

I love the attitude!!!! Win or loose it is the right attitude to have….. I hope he raises the level of play and gives RAFA challenge, because as tennis fans, we love a good game and what makes a good game is challenge… When it comes to clay/RG RAFA is in a league by itself…. Very hard to challenge him on clay in general, but especially in RG Center Court….. but you never know and as Nole said there is nothing wrong with believing that it can go, differently? In Nole I trust to make it a challenging match and may the best win…….. and I hope deep down in my heart that this time we will have a different winner….

I think that Nadal is slightly favourite. He played excellent the last weeks/months.
But I shouldn't be to curtain that Nadal wins this easily. If Nole plays like today (or even better), Nadal will probably have a much more difficult final than he has had over the last years.
I still go for Nadal in 4. But I certainly don't count out the possibility that Nole wins in 4 or 5. Nole has definately a lot more weapons that David Ferrer to hurt Nadal (Return, backhand, 1st serve). Nadal won't win his serve games against Djokovic so easily as against Ferrer.

So the realistic situation is that Nole is not playing great, and Rafa is, and Rafa, having already beaten Djokovic twice on clay, and being the better clay courter in general, will win this match. And if he plays well, he almost certainly will. That's not overconfidence, IMO, but rather a realistic judgment of the current proceedings and how things are likely to play out come Sunday.

I like what Nole said there. Not about "I'd own him if my back wasn't sore" but the bit about him realizing he doesn't have to do anything special to win, just play his game to the top of his ability and believing that would be enough. Words of a future champion, and that's coming from a RF fan.

I really think Djokovic is taking this. It seems almost meant to be. He has been on the brink of defeat so many times during his Novak Slam quest and just didn't go down - Federer at the US Open last year, Murray and Nadal at AO, Tsonga in the QF of this tournament, and several minor hiccups. It really seems meant to be. Besides, Simon Reed picked Rafa to win the tournament.

I really have a feeling than on Sunday Djokovic will become the second player in the Open Era to hold all 4 Slams.

I am not sure at all. Nadal supposedly played an amazing match against Berdych in Rome and then in the final (from the few important bits I watched) was very beatable by Djokobot. The conditions were also similar there in that they were damp. I know Djoko made UEs and was not amazing but he kept it close. That's the only major weapon/asset he has in his possession that no other player does have - the ability to go toe to toe with RN even when not at his best.

If he has conserved some mental energy from this clay season and comes out as a BP converting machine, he might have a chance. Having said that, I haven't watched RN at all here but from what little I saw against Almagro he was just moving him around like a bunny because Mugro allowed it to happen. Djoko can move better and make RN run. It's going to be interesting following the live scores .

Clay Death is really getting too much heat for his Fed prediction. My 2 cents, CD was a tiny bit worried going into the semi's that should Clay Warrior face Nole in the final, it could end with Clay Warriors defeat. So he subconsciously over estimated Fed's chances and made a bad prediction.

For the record, I disagreed with CD on his Fed prediction. But on the subject of Sunday, I do not. It's Nadal's to lose. And it is very possible Nadal wins it easily.

Mr. Oracle
06-09-2012, 12:34 AM
Let me give some concrete evidence on why Djoker takes this one in 4:

1) Neither player will be able to hit through the other with regularity, which turns this into a battle of UEs.

Winner in UE count: Djokovic.
Deciding factors: Titanium balls, resolve, and new title "the mentally toughest man in the world."

2) Nadal uses moonballs as a weapon.

Winner: Djokovic. Pac-man djoker loves to run around the court and gobble up his moonballs. He loves it especially when he gets to hit 40+ or more of them per rally. The more the better. This drives nadal apeshit and eventually he nets the ball or shankfeds it. Nadal can't count on tired Nole anymore cause Nole don't eat no damn croissants anymore! Nadal starts to tire before the gluten-free-one.

3) Mental toughness.

Winner: Djokovic. The tally of getting the ball back starts to get to Nadal. His mental weakness (only seen against the steel-balled-one), starts to become evident. He starts to get that look of panic on his face (miami 2011), and his balance becomes affected. He is now firmly in Shankfed territory (and I'm actually feeling sorry for him at this point). Djokovic sees this and starts to thump his chest like a silver-back gorilla and assumes his alpha-male status--Mopeovic is nowhere to be seen. Nadal assumes a meek look of submission and starts to worship and submit his will ("Djokovic is a monster" and "He is unplayable" become refrains for him once again).

Nadal had a great run. He's the greatest claycourter ever. But his run ends Sunday. There is still time to get on the glory train. It's too late after the fact.

Again, I really think people are failing to see the enormous amount of pressure Novak is going to feel. Add to that the confidence Nadal has gained over the last couple months, including two straight set wins over Novak. This is not 2009 gimp Nadal. And it's not 2011 no confidence Nadal. It's a hungry, confident, playing lights out tennis Nadal on his favorite surface at his favorite tournament - where he is 51-1.

Novak is going to have to channel God to win this.

Nadal always plays great against Berdych, because Tomas's game plays right into his hands. It's one of the biggest mismatches between top 10 players.

Novak can definitely beat Rafa, but it will take a monumental effort. If only he had a stronger serve... he doesn't so he will really have to outgrind Rafa from the baseline, he doesn't exactly have the firepower to hit through him over five sets. The key will be whether Nadal can break down Djokovic's backhand or not. If he doesn't, Nole has a very good chance here. Whoever wins this crosscourt matchup - Novak's backhand vs Rafa's topspin forehand should have the edge here.

I think Navratilova is right. The pressure is on Rafa and not Nole. Rafa's been pushed into a corner, this is his last bastion... Then again, he plays his best tennis in those circumstances.

Still, I think if they both start playing lights out tennis, Nole has the mental edge to sustain something like that.

I love your confidence. And I've been waiting over a year for Nadal to exact his revenge on Novak in a slam final. I'm with you brother.

I do not agree about the Australian open. IMO, Nadal only took that 5 sets out of sheer will. He was outgunned in that match, yet he still almost found a way to win it. IMO, this points to Nadal finally figuring out his mental block with Djoker. The bad news is I don't see how he beats him on hard courts in a best of 5. That match was not as close as the scoreline. Other than his brief moment in the 5th where he was 4-2, Nadal never led in that match. And as soon as he did, he went on to lose 5 of the next 6 games. Nadal left everything on that court and came up short. 100% Novak beats 100% Nadal on hard courts in best of 5 every time. Clay and grass are different though. There Nadal has advantages he can leverage.

There Nadal has advantages he can leverage.

nole is a better hard court player on hard courts. his record spells that out.

this is red clay and its best of 5 sets. and to make it even more impossible, its nadal at a RG final. nobody wants to play nadal at RG.

There's more resting on Noles shoulders. A lot more. He is about to make history. Nadal is getting a 7th RG title whether he loses Sunday or not. A lot of people think he is the underdog. Nadal is loves being in this position and I believe he will play very confidently. Will there be nerves? Sure, but Novak has the weight of 43 years of history on his shoulders. It's much heavier for him.

actually i have never seen nadal so relaxed, so calm, and so happy as i have seen him at RG this year.

watch out for that quiet confidence. that is when he butchers your ass on the red clay.

this is a different nadal in case you have not noticed.

So does this mean you are finally retiring the "I'm not happy with the clay warrior" BS?

I'm with you. Nadal wins this. I'd say Nole has no chance if it weren't for the fact that Nadal has lost 3 straight slam finals to him. That's the only thing Novak has going for him IMO and if Nole can get an early lead, doubts might creep into Nadal's mind and keep things interesting.

Having said that, I believe this is very unlikely. One, Nadal will come out with all guns blazing - he does not want to give Novak confidence. And two, the two straight set loses to Nadal on clay this year have invariably damaged Novak's belief. At a minimum, it has renewed Nadal's confidence and that is bad news for Novak. Nadal feeds off his confidence and that makes him very dangerous, especially on clay.
