:o Marat needs to learn the art of subtlety. If he wants to rest to prepare for Paris(the tournament I meant) he can at least make it not so obvious.

He's not a machine. He has played a lot lately. Get some rest and. If he wins just one match at Paris he'll be ahead of Moya And Coria and he'll be at Houston. That's all. I don't want to see him burnout at Houston.

I'll drink to that Alfonso!

But I do think he'll have the pressure in his head next week. The way he is gonna deal with that, will say alot I think.

I would say it's not such a big problem for Marat that he lost. He did very well the last weeks and has so far a really placable ending to his season after he didn't play well in the middle of it.

And yes, Llodra can play singles. He has had a few good results this year.

He's not a machine.
Very true, Alfonso!
Maybe Roger is this robot and is so machine-like that he can come from playing and defending his Wimbledon title on grass to Gstaad and playing on clay to win another title in three full consecutive weeks... but not Marat ;) ;)

I don't agree with some takes that he was tanking for three reasons:

1) It made absolut no sense to throw away the tourney where he was the home guy, had a very easy draw ahead and 40 points on the line that would have secured not only TMC place, but a higher seed and likely year end rank.
2) Llodra played a great match (It's a little annoying attitude from some Safin's fans the way they pretend the other player doesn't exist)
3) Besides, I saw the match on line and Safin was just in one of his typical frustration days.

Marat

Must have been in one of those days :o :(

Llorda though is a tough player and cos of his style he's not easy to play against :)

Marat must have tried to hit the ball out of the stadium a few times :o

I saw him do it 2-3 times unless it was an action replay
didnt he realise its indoors and its got a roof

then again it was Marat :cuckoo:

it all went pear-shaped after he missed 2 bp's to lead 5-4 in 1st
the racket went then.......... his head was already missing.

His focus was on Paris not on this tournament. He needed a rest before Paris otherwise he would have no chance to win Paris. We all know how much Marat loves TMS Paris.

Well, he will be back next week. I guess it is better for him to rest now then next week play some good tennis so that he can qualify for the Masters Cup.

Then he shouldn't have played. It's a home country tournament for him. Do you think Roger would ever not try his hardest at Basel? Heck he showed up for Gstaad, ON CLAY, right after winning wimbledon.... TWICE. These players who don't have many tournaments in their country take them all very seriously, they want to win them almost as badly as a slam. If Marat really tanked this match then that is just very poor. See, I like Marat a lot, but this is why I could never become a big fan.

Either this, or his fans are just incapable of believing he might have gotten outplayed?

I think some people may imply he tanked to feel better about it. He would 've been fined if he had tanked this match.

Safin was probably outplayed.

 who mentioned tanking? most people in this thread are joking.
he got frustrated by Llodra's good play, lost his head on a point end second set, never regained another chance. the end.

lilly, half the people in this thread are saying he lost to prepare and rest for Paris... and all i'm saying is that if that is really true, that's really poor.

Vass
10-29-2004, 02:55 PM
he wan't tanking. It was all out OAFing and getting mad. He played till the end, but wasn't able to calm himself down... Perhaps it was tiredness that caused all this. I realy hope so. Now he has a few days to rest.

Aurora
10-29-2004, 03:00 PM
dear deb, you're right that would be poor. All I'm saying is that alot of those statements are either said in fun or in hopefullnes. and most of all, no one knows that.

I'm gonna stick with Vass' argument: if he didn't want to win to save himself for Paris, there was no reason for getting so frustrated (i.e. arguing, smashing rackets, hitting balls in the air)

Don't take things too seriously...When I said: "I hope that his head was somewhere between the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees"...I was kidding....I was making fun of him and his oafish moments...And I specified "I hope" ;)

Concerning the schedule....I don't understand Marat sometimes...And then I remember that he played in Sopot on clay just before Olympics :o

Angry Safin Upset by Call, Llodra
October 29, 2004

Marat Safin lost his temper and his quarterfinal at the St. Petersburg Open on Friday, getting surprised by seventh-seeded Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-1 after protesting a line call.

The top-seeded Safin wasted two break points at 4-4 in first set. At deuce, chair umpire Carlos Bernardos was unable to rule on a shot by Llodra and ordered the point to be replayed.

Safin started arguing, insisting that the ball was out and that it had left a mark on the court. The point was replayed, and Llodra wound up holding serve to lead 5-4.

In the second set, Safin continued to argue with Bernardos, and his level of play dropped. Llodra broke him at love in the fourth game and then held for 4-1.

Safin refused to shake hands with Bernardos after the match.

A win could have clinched a spot for Safin at the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston next month. He is in competition with Andre Agassi, Carlos Moya, Guillermo Coria, Tim Henman and David Nalbandian for the last four places at that tournament.

Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Gaston Gaudio have the other berths.

In Saturday's St. Petersburg Open semifinals, Llodra will face Karol Beck, who eliminated Cyril Saulnier 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Anyway, I didn't see the match, thought it'd be a shoe-in for Marat, but the OAF came out. Only concern I have is that when he loses his confidence, it really can go :o

You must learn a lot about tennis if you think that.

This is her way of justifying Andy's withdrawal from Monaco this year, the pressure of performing at home where there's only a few tournaments. She just tries to use it on Marat and other players to lok consistent in what she writes.

Seriously- on the one hand I would have liked him to continue his streak, on the other hand there are so many injuries right now, I want him to be 100% fit for Houston. Besides, I'd rather have him do well in a TMS.
