Feeling like Federer's year this. The easiest first four rounds in the history of the universe, then gets beaten up by Del Potro before injuries reverse things.

To complete it, Tsonga might knock out Djoko :-)

Juan wasn't physically up to the challenge. His court positioning and general movement is very good for his size but still understandably inferior to Roger and the other top guys. Now hoping he rests that knee, gave him a lot of trouble but at least encouraged him to go more for his power shots when he was able to.

Of course.
But on the other hand: He could have won this match even with a fit and not injured Del Potro. Both were very very bad in the 1st set and very good in the 2nd set. Federer was good in those last three sets and he really could have won against a good Del Potro.
Del Potro was not tired, there was clearly something wrong.
Lucky Federer today.
But it's wrong to say it was only luck.

No need to apologize for pulling off a half-volley from the baseline when JMDP hit that forehand about 100mph. That was an awesome and smart shot. You can say it was a mishit but I have seen Fed pull off those kind of short shots many many times and I am not convinced that it was all luck. It's takes brains and guts to not back off shots like that coming that hard and deep at 0-30. :wavey:

Fed's angry outburst at that idiot in the crowd who yelled out in the TB seemed to have relaxed him and then he played so cleanly which of course broke down the will, the body and the game of JMDP. Champions don't give up. Fed is a champion.

Heartbreaking loss this. This could have been a big turnaround in his year, his career even maybe. Why couldn't that knee last just an hour longer? I wonder Where here career is going? He is going to be slam contender ever again or will he just have to settle for lower top 10?
It looks to me like the injury break of 2010 has also affected his mental capacities.

06-05-2012, 05:58 PM
JMDP was creaming Fed in the 1st set and after he won the 2nd set TB I had a hard time believing Fed would be able to turn the match around, as at that time Fed had some 40% serve percentage, looked very passive and suffered from a completely silly, stubborn game-plan - out-ballbashing JMDP from the back of the court??? Good luck with that! :help:

A stupid yell "out!" from a lunatic in the crowd got him all fired up, however (someone should make a gif out of Fed's "Shut Up!" in reply :worship:) and from that moment on you could see Fed wasn't in for going down without a genuine fight.
Of course, Fed got aided by JMDP's knee trouble, which obviously hampered his movement, but it's fair to note that Fed upped his game just the same. Suddenly the serve got much better and Fed remembered that a dropper here-and-there might just be the proper tactic to get his opponent moving around. Good victory in the end, hope he picks up from this. :yeah:

JMDP  lovely  at the net btw. Better luck next time!

Well, here's a clue. He beat two of the best players of all-time back to back to win a Slam when he was 20; he got to the top 10 in a year after career threatening injury; he reached the QF of a Slam through knee pain and pushed his worst matchup on tour to five.

Does this sound like a champion or a guy who will spend his career in the fringes of the top 10?

There is not much to say about this match - i was right that on clay Delpo has bigger chance vs Fed than on quicker surfaces, but most important for me from this match is that Delpoīs serve i hope will be back, his fastest serve was 218kmh today, i donīt know but i think this should be his fastest serve of the year, in Australina and other tournaments his fastest serves are usually just about 205-210kmh and serve besides fitness is the key part he needs to improove, so hope his serve will be bigger weapon for him in future.

Fed was a goner and it was easily predictable. He got lucky, also raised his level a notch and now he will actually send Nole packing again like last year, that's my feelling about this match.

Especially if the weater gets a bit hotter out there.

Awesome turnaround from Roger even if the 4th set was tanked by Delpo. He changed his game and took adv of a tired Delpo and didn't fall into any traps. Unlucky he didn't get Tsonga in the Semi but maybe its a blessing to let Nole try to take out Nadal.

Fed was stretched out by Del Potro on his BH side. Fed hit a slice down the line, the crowd thought the ball was going out and started mumbling. Fed dind't realise it was going in so he didn't move back to the center at the court. Del Potro hit in the empy space and won the point.

sure but injury management and fitness are part of the sport. I don't think Fed is quite 100% himself  but anyways if you come on court to play then you accept the result. It's the same for everyone.

Yes, but It's just that he's not a threat to this top guys anymore: I mean he already lost 5 times to Federer this year and only got his first sets today. He just disappears sometimes during matches (also for example against Nole here last year). He seems to lack a bit of the enormous mental strength he had back then. Also he plays more passive, in 2009 he was just blasting winners from all over the court. He could enter in a mode in which he was unplayable en I haven't seen him do that ever since WTF 2009.

Not anymore? You mean not yet, rise. He's on the rise, slowly making his way back. His last best-of-five matches vs Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were all very competitive and very good indications of his progress.

Yes, he's not there yet and there's a lot of work to do. And he could really use a break with his healthy, but he's definitely on the right path imo. This has definitely been his best GS tournament since his comeback, too bad his body gave in too soon and that he was drawn against Federer. He will keep rising though, health permitting.

Now go take care of that knee and gear up for the rest of the season

The second Slam is only a matter of time if you keep progressing and fighting like this :D

This.

2012 is shades of 2009 for Delpo - if you look at his very one-sided loss to Fed at AO followed by five-set loss to Fed at RG... Delpo is clearly a player who needs to build up to success. He needs match wins and confidence. This should help him. Unfortunately he wasn't 100% physically today and I think the first two sets took too much out of him, but hopefully next time in a big match he'll take down the Fed (or another Top 3 player).

Overall, an impressive tournament for Delpo considering what his clay court season was and the injury he brought into Paris. No one expected him one set away from the semis.

It looks to me like the injury break of 2010 has also affected his mental capacities.

I think we need to keep giving him time. It took him time to reach the pinnacle that was the 2009 US Open. And he is developing this year and making steps, although he obviously still has quite a lot to improve. This tournament makes me more hopeful than I was before the start of it.

That's how I look at it too. He surpassed my expectations in this tournament, even today. He is fighting and steadily making his way back to the top. There are only 3 players at the moment who are clearly on another level, and that's the level he's fighting to reach.

Too bad he was drawn against Federer again, and Berdych in the previous round too. Had he been lucky enough to be drawn in that section with Ferrer and Murray, he'd probably be going to the semis. But oh well, his progress is what matters most, if he doesn't have any more setbacks, look out for him in New York in September.

Class act from Delpo,some quotes:

Q. Just talk about the match. You got off to the great start, played the good tiebreak, and then looks like the knee started hurting, but then in the fifth set it looks like you moved better. Can you just take me through it.
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: No, I think anyways I play a great match, even the third and fourth set. He start to play much better than in the beginning of the match and I feel his ball more in the baseline. He put me to run a lot in the third and fourth set.
He made better match than me after the second set. I don't have any chance to win until the first game in the fifth set when I had break point. He play well points and he take the opportunity in the fifth set and he win.

Q. When you called the trainer onto the court, did he give you some painkillers for your knee?
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: Yeah, but was to remove my tape just for be more tight. Nothing special.

Q. Are you saying that your knee did not affect your movement at all after the second set?
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: No.

Q. No? Because in the fourth set I think he had 13 winners and no unforced errors at that point. Did you feel he was feeling so well there's nothing I can do?
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: Yeah, I feel, like you say, I serve really bad in the fourth set, also. And if I serve bad against Federer or the top guys, you don't have too many chance to win points.
I serve bad in the fourth set, and then in the fifth set he broke me very early to take the advantage. He was playing with more confidence the fifth set than me.
When he had the chance to close the match, he made it.

Roger no resultů herido hoy en dia. Del Potro era un jugador diferente tras el descansco lesiůn.

If it was that bad then why did he not retire? Clearly his movement was impaired, but I think it was also a mental issue where he suddenly realised he was 2 sets up against Fed, and it made him falter. Were it entirely down to the knee, he wouldn't have been able to put up such a fight in the fifth set (and you have to ask yourself, if he was able to do it right at the end, why not in the 3rd when he still had the momentum of the first two sets, and wasn't so tired?)

Bad injury break for Del Potro once again. Federer didn't start well and was outplayed in the first two sets but started to find his form during the end. Started to serve better too, which he'll need to do to have any chance.

Hopefully he can come up with a performance against Djokovic.

Always wonder what Del Potro would have achieved if he had remained fit after US 2009.

We will never know unfortunately, we can only speculate. The timing couldn't have been worse - career threatening injury + surgery right after winning his first Slam title. Talk about bad luck.

But he's still 23 and on the rise, he has time to do some (more) great stuff in this sport and kind of make up for lost time in a way.

ROGER FEDERER June 05 2012
June 5, 2012 //0R. FEDERER/J. Del Potro 3‑6, 6‑7, 6‑2, 6‑0, 6‑3

Q. In the first two sets especially, I mean, it looked as if Del Potroís resistance to your groundstroke rhythm had improved and he was playing much better than before in the groundstrokes. Then in the rest of the match you suddenly seemed to take over. What made the difference between the start and the end of the match?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, comparing to this yearís matches, itís obviously the first one on clay. Conditions are slow, particularly on clay. That makes it hard for a lot of variation. You donít get any free points on the serve.

Anything thatís maybe short rallies and chips and down the line shots, itís a better match for me. He obviously like to go back into backhand and then rip the forehand once he gets the chance.

I thought it was very good conditions for him. I knew it was going to be tough anyway. I have still been struggling to find my rhythm. I did feel it in the first set, even though he was up two sets ‑‑ two breaks. I was finding a way back and starting to feel better.

Just trying to figure out how to play a guy who returns from so far back on a slow court. Do you try to serve through him? Which I tried; didnít work. Or do I try and move it around a bit. And that worked a bit better, but it was really in the mix‑up that, you know, I found success.

Second set was a tough, you know, set for me to lose, but he played a really good breaker and got the better of me. But I was happy that the first two sets took some time, because I did favor myself once the match got longer. Thatís kind of how it came.

So Iím very happy with the way I fought and started in the third set, fourth set, and even in the fifth set where obviously it was the toughest, because that was his last chance and his resistance maybe was the biggest there.

Q. You said that you felt that as the match went on your chances would improve. Did you feel his physical condition started to deteriorate a bit when he had the trainer on and they were looking at his knee? How did you feel he was moving at that stage?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I donít know. He called the trainer but he didnít take a timeout. So I didnít know what they were talking about, if he got painkillers or what happened. So I was just trying to focus on me, really, because I was in trouble. He wasnít.

Maybe his knee was, I donít know. But doesnít matter how bad that knee is, maybe he can just sit on it and just say, Okay, here. Take the two next sets. I will wait here half hour, 45 minutes, and then Iíll come back in the fifth set and I will destroy you.

I knew it was going to be a tricky match, I knew that margins were not on my side anymore. Thatís where I just tried to keep playing tough, make him understand how far he still had to go, as well, because I had a very long way.

I was able to do all of those things, and I was very happy the way I played, you know, starting the third set.

Q. It was a rare shout out from you at the end of the second set tiebreak. I couldnít quite tell what it was about. Were you frustrated with your game or with the crowd?

ROGER FEDERER: No, I mean, look, I was pushing hard and I was trying to ‑‑ should have maybe won that second set earlier. Iím stuck in a breaker. Juan Martin is playing well, hitting hard, Iím in defense.

Obviously I was emotional and I was, you know, sometimes upset. Sometimes just trying to push myself on. Push harder and try harder and move faster, all those things, because I knew it could be crucial to the match.

Thank God it wasnít, but in the moment itself you donít know. So you wait and see.

Q. What does it feel like being two sets down in a Grand Slam? What did you think about maybe your match against Tommy Haas here a few years ago when you returned to the game, of course, and won?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, of course I did think of the Tommy Haas match. Of course I thought about the five‑setter I had here with Juan Martin in 2009.

Maybe I drew some inspiration off it. But then again, completely different place, you know. Suzanne Lenglen; itís raining. Itís a different situation, really.

But, you know, you just try to push further and itís not easy, you know. But at the same time you are happy itís a Grand Slam, because any other tournament I would have been out of the tournament.

This way, you know, the road to victory is much longer and itís not a sprint; itís a marathon. Iím happy I came through. I feel great, you know, after the five‑setter.

So Iím obviously happy I get two days, but itís not necessary. Looking forward to a big semifinal.

Q. When youíre playing Novak, how much do previous encounters go into your thinking going into the match?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, itís helpful if youíve won the last three, four, five, maybe. Obviously it helps to win one like he did in Rome, I would think.

But then again, this is the best situation. Itís the best‑of‑five. Itís something weíre not ‑ I donít want to say accustomed to anymore as much, because we did play many more best‑of‑five set matches, letís say, seven to ten years ago when all of the finals or many of the tournaments like in Basel, for instance, Gstaad, Vienna. You name it, they were all best‑of‑five set finals. The Masters 1000, most of them, were best of‑five‑set finals.

So you used to play many more. Now all of a sudden you can go six months and not play almost any five‑setter, and even three years, letís say.

So itís a different approach, and I think weíre both aware of that. Weíre looking forward to it. Give us more time to find our range, and once we find our range, itís going to be tough for the opponent.

Q. You just said best‑of‑five you need a different approach. Can you talk about what some of the best approaches are of best‑of‑five over best‑of‑three against him?

ROGER FEDERER: Doesnít matter if itís Novak or any other player really. You just want to be well prepared; you want to be mentally ready for a long day.

Obviously over five sets, as well, the rain or the sunshine could come and go. You have more possibility of interruption just because youíre out there for a longer period of time. Itís a different kind of approach.

Obviously the start to the match is important, but then again, we saw that it didnít matter at the US Open when we played each other; it didnít matter this time when we played; to Del Potro it didnít matter.

So that sometimes just keeps you honest to the very, very end, and you have to play as hard as I can every single point against him and see how it goes.

THE MODERATOR: French questions.

Q. Can you explain the beginning of this match? Were there any specific reasons to explain the beginning of your match?

ROGER FEDERER: No, I was just trying to find my game. The court was very slow. I served at 200 kilometers per hour and he returned very nicely, so it wasnít like in Madrid.

Q. On a scale from 0 to 10, how well did you play today? Should you prefer to play Djokovic or Nadal?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, Rafa, Iím not playing him next time. Heís not even qualified for the final, so Iím playing Novak. I hope Iíll play a very good match.

I donít know. If my level was one for all of my previous matches, I know that I have to reach a level of 10 to play against him. So thatís all I can say. Weíll see.

Weíll see how fit he is. I know I have to play a great match.

Q. Novak saved four match points against Jo. You probably know that. What would you have to say about this match?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, Iím very disappointed for Jo. I would have loved to play him here in Paris.

Itís like in Bercy. He missed two match points against Isner; he missed four here. I have a feeling that the crowd would have loved to see such a match. For him, itís a disappointment.

As for me, itís nothing different as from last year. Iím playing Djokovic in the semifinal.

Q. During the two first sets, you were trying to find your tennis. Could you say that you found it during the two last sets?

ROGER FEDERER: No, I wonít say that. Everybody said the same thing about Gasquet when he had 6‑Love, 6‑Love and then lost to Murray.

But anyway, Iím very happy I managed to go through to the semifinals.

Q. This was a complicated match, but do you think you can raise your level to defeat Djokovic as you did last year?

ROGER FEDERER: Yes. What else can I say?

Q. A question from your fans, which is not much to do with the match: You were born very close to the French/Swiss border. Are you certain you were born in Switzerland?

ROGER FEDERER: I think yes. I canít remember because I was very small, very little when it happened. (Laughter.)

But my mother told me it was in Basel, so it was on the Swiss side and not on the French side. But if you want confirmation, ask my mother. She knows everything about it.

Q. You lost to Tsonga in five sets in Wimbledon. You also lost to Djokovic in five sets. Would this victory in five sets confirm that you can win a match in five sets?

ROGER FEDERER: I know I can win a match in five sets. I should have, I could have, against Jo or Novak. It was so close against Novak. Afterwards itís normal to have regrets.

No, Iím not asking myself that kind of question. Iím fit. I have no physical problems, which was different three, five weeks ago. Iím very happy. Iím in good shape. Thatís it. Iím fine.

Itís always good to come back from two sets to zero. You donít always play matches in five sets, and that was the one I had to win.

Q. This is your 31st semifinals in a Grand Slam, like Jimmy Connors. Do these figures still matter to you?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, yes, a bit. Itís an inspiration for an athlete, for a tennis player. I find inspiration from great matches, from other players. I find inspiration in records.

I need many different things: Fans, tournaments, traveling. I need many things to push me to accomplish even more. So when I break a record like this one, itís phenomenal and I like it.

Q. Weíve seen you asking for different balls when itís raining like this. Are you trying to get the driest possible balls?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, we players, we no longer have time to choose the balls. I try and do that very quickly, and I think about the situation in the tiebreak.

Well, the ball boy would roll the ball behind you, and I just wanted to see how we would stop it. I did this four times. I was a bit stern, but the ball boys are very good. I just wanted to see if he could catch it, and they did each time.

I needed this to relax mentally for 10 seconds. I didnít want not to be nice to the ball boy.

I believe hard work's going to pay off, because early on maybe I didn't always work at my hardest. For me, this is very hard to understand. How can you play a shot like that on match point? Maybe he's been doing it for 20 years, so for him it was very normal. You've got to ask him."

your hero fed was happy to have a guaranteed injured loser here.
after all, he pretentiously SAID "TRY PLAYING EVEN IF YOU HAVE HEALTH ISSUES". fed bullshitted "novak escaped. jo could have won."

I complete agree, cup of tea perhaps?

Luckerer lucks out again with an opponent that was outplaying him for two sets and then got hit with injury.

No matter. Novak or Rafa will take care of Luckerer. :)

Either Nole or Roger will be killed in the final vs Rafa, so it doesn't really matters who gets there, they will be getting the RUP plate anyway.

Roger should have tanked this match, he will either lose to Nole and lose a pigeon or lose to Rafa and be even close to turkey status by him. :o

Nadal would rather play vs. injured Delpo/Federer in the quaters/semis that Almagro/Ferrer....

Ferru will put on a fight but Rafa is like a version of him just 24353454564565757 times better so the result is absolutely NID in straight sets, Almagro bends over in an embarrassing way, remember when he had MP against Rafa and doublefaulted? :stupid:

It's unlikely that anyone else will, so he'll have to do it himself... and keep the runner-up plate too.

I'm sure losing a pigeon/becoming a turkey are the first thing in Federer's mind at the moment. It's clearly much more important than going as far as possible in the tournament

People need to understand that elite athletes' minds don't work in the same way as the average fan's/tards'. Federer doesn't fear Novak or Rafa; on the contrary, he still believes he can beat them and is driven by that challenge. It's that mentality that has made him a great champion. He'd not have won a single Slam if he was wired to run away from challenges.

Surprising to read this from you...
A true champion doesn't tank matches, and certainly not a QF or a SF of a GS.
If anything, Fed's feistiness on court today shows how hungry he still is.

Whether he makes it through Djokovic or not - expect a fight.

My point is that this tournament has a sense of inevitability that is not nice, I love Rafa but I'd like to see him being more challenged by other players on clay, he's so great in the surface but the rest of players that are somewhat decent on clay aren't fit to tie his shoelaces so you don't get the feeling of what could happen next or that there are 3 or more guys vying for the title. It's great to see him win, what is not so great is to see him win so easily, I prefer when tournaments have more competition.

Roger no resultů herido hoy en dia. Del Potro era un jugador diferente tras el descansco lesiůn.
