Grigor on Grass: 2012

Hey everyone =]

Time to kick off the grass court season build up!

Grigor is on the entry list to play at Queen's Club London in about a weeks time. A place he has performed really well at in the past.

Hoping to watch him at Wimbledon again this year so if he gets drawn on a small court, expect photos and a match review :P

Who else is excited???

That means he may get a bad draw:p But it's Wimby!! He can beat anyone!!
(and he has to beat someone impossible to prove himself!)
I'll go to Wimbledon but in the row for queue, so I also hope he will play at a small court at least R1;)

I hope I won't lose control when I see him:lol::lol:

Hey =]

Draw for Queens is out! ---> http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2012/311/mds.pdf

Grisho has a quali in the first round, and then possibly Liam Broady or more likely Gilles Muller in the second. If he makes that it would probably be Murray in the third round.

Great draw for him i think, plenty of oppertunity. I hope he is motivated after the Gasquet match where he did so well until the cramps. Can't wait!

What days are you guys coming to Wimbledon? I'm likely gonna be there on both the first days if the weather is good, would be great to meet you guys!

He was in control throughout the whole match but he shouldn't have dropped his serve when he served for it and he should have converted more of his 15 break points. On the plus side, he broke back as soon as he dropped his serve and closed it out. Well done Grigor.

That's good to hear but he needs to up his game in the next round. Muller has a huge serve so he'll have to take his chances and convert any break points he gets in his next match.

Best match I've seen Grigor play in a long time. His serve was lethal today and he hit some stunning winners off both wings. He hit some UEs off his backhand at the start of the match but once he got going, his backhand looked beautiful, especially down the line. If he can get more consistency off that shot, it will be a match winner. I was particularly impressed with the way he broke back even saving a SP in the process and he really upped his game in the tie-break. The crowd were really in to the match, the commentators were singing his praises and I liked when he left the court, he high-fived a row of ball-girls.

The draw has really opened up now and he should see this as a genuine opportunity to do well. He beat Andersson on grass last year so there's no reason he can't do it again, especially with the way he is playing.

Very nice 2 round takesn with authority.
It's good for Grisho that he didn't do 2faults and when he had to serve for the matche he did it with "no pression"
He needs to be more cynical and to play without fear. Maybe he's finding the right knowledge of his potential because it is the only thing that was missing

He defended the 45 points from Eastbourne and he will lose another 45 at wimbledon. Here he won 90 points, so everything he win at Wimbledon this year will be plus :) Hopefully he will finally have some good draw at Grand slam for at least reaching Round 3 :) But knowing his "luck" with draws at times when he is in good shape I expect a Top 10 player in round 1 :( Lets hope I'll be wrong!

It's a shame he lost but Nalbandian dealt with the terrible conditions better. It's been a good week and he should go into Wimbledon with some renewed confidence. For those not in the UK, he has developed quite a following here this week. The BBC have been promoting him heavily, interviewing him more than any other player and he has been a massive crowd favourite. Depending on the draw, he stands a good chance of been considered for one of the show-courts at Wimbledon, even if he isn't playing a seed.

only interviews are taken when he is in Bulgaria which is 1-2 times per year...

I don't mean he has been featured on the national news or anything but the BBC broadcasts this tournament for about 8 hours every day and since Murray went out, he has been the most discussed player.

All the commentators have been talking him up as a potential future star if he can get mentally tougher and saying how much the tournament director has believed in him since he was a junior. They have shown an interview of him before each match and interviewed him again after his wins. They've made a big deal about how popular he is with the crowds and especially the ballgirls. They also love the fact that he says London is his favourite city and how easy he is to interview. Murray's early exit has been Grigor's gain because normally they fixate on Murray but this year they couldn't do that so the BBC have really promoted Grigor as the star of this tournament.

I will be at Wimbledon on Tuesday and have a ticket for Court1. Given his popularity at Queens, there is a very slight chance he might get put on that court but it is unlikely. If he gets put on a show court, I think Court2 is more likely. If he gets put on an outside court, I will definitely be watching him.

Well I think he will be on a show court, because the match with Anderson will be interesting and he got more popular in London after his run at Queens :) I don't think he will be on some of the bigger courts - CC, Court 1 or Court 2, but there're six more show courts - 3, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 18 and I think he will be on one of them :) We will find out tomorrow :)

3, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 18 aren't really show courts. They are nice courts with a fair amount of seating but you don't need specific tickets to get into them, your grounds-pass will be sufficient. If he's on Centre (unlikely) or 2 (quite likely) then I won't be able to see him unless he plays in the evening, in which case I might be able to get one of the re-sale tickets.

I didn't realise Court3 was ticketed now. It's been a few years since I've been, so I guess it has changed in that time. I just checked my Wimbledon guide and there is a block of unreserved seating in the south-west corner.

Hey Piggy, I just checked the website and the only court you can't buy tickets at the gate for is Court3. They can only be purchased the day before at ticketmaster.co.uk.
http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/Wimbledon-Tennis-Championship-tickets/artist/29663

If Grigor was playing on Court3, I was thinking about buying a ticket at the gate but you can't do that and when they go on sale online, we won't know the schedule of play.

That's a good point, if his matches are televised, can someone please record and upload them if they are able? It would be greatly appreciated. :worship:

After two days of great tennis i finally have a chance to post about the match. Court3 is a nice court but when you go to the unallocated seats, you cant leave! I got on the court at 10.30 and sat through a crap women's match that went to 3 sets and never seemed to end. I really wanted to go to the toilet after that but there was no way i was losing my seat as there was a big queue to get on court. I just had to hope Grigor won in 3 sets and there was no rain delay. Sadly i was wrong about both but i stayed strong lol.

Grigor got abig cheer when je came on court and apart from a few south africans, everyone was supporting him. His serve was awsome, especially the one out eide in the deuce court. He killed anderson with his backhand slice who was digging balls out of the dirt all day. He also handled anderson's big serve very well and i felt confident he would finf a way to break it. All the magic came from Grigor wjo hit some amazing passing shots and winners that had the crowd cheering. His topspin backhand was a little unreliable but when it worked, it did a fair amount of damage. The best thing thougj was the way Grigor handled the big points. Clutch tennis at its finest and a big change from earlier this year. He is like a different player and looks confident on court.

He reacyed well to losing the 3rd set and kept putting pressure on anderson's serve, finally breaking it. When he won the match, he got a great reception from the crowd and it is clear his profile has really been raised in Britain since Queens. When he starts winning big matches, he will be a huge star.

Im on a train to Scotland now and i should br home after 4pm. Hopefully i will get to see his match today. Marcus will be tough but Grigor cam win it and a match against Murray on CC would be incredible!. If anyone can record today/s match it would be great. Ibwill upload my .photos when i get achance.

I had an awesome time and if any of you get a chance to see Grigor live, take it! His game is absolutely stunning and live streams just dont do it justice.

He looked like he will vomit any minute now and his head was shaking!
That is very bad, don't know if this a lack of fitness, but match just started, he shouldn't feel tired, yet his head wasn't there from the beginning, completely off hitting everything, some of the shanks went to the stands.
I don't like this Mouratoglu academy, though, he had never been so week before, just 4 sets 2 days ago shouldn't have to be a problem.
If this is just a flu that's a bad luck, but it might be something beneath that is bothering me a lot :(

Does anyone know what caused Grigor to retire? Has the Bulgarian media reported anything yet? If it was a bug or virus as seems to be the case, then it has nothing to do with his fitness. These kind of things can floor the strongest man so it would just be bad luck he caught something. All he can do is pick himself up and make an even bigger effort at the next tournament. It's a real shame because he played so well in his first round and should have beaten Marcus but at least the grasscourt season will be extended due to the Olympics so he can still take advantage of it.

I couldn't see any of the match because I had the train journey from hell that just got worse and worse. There was flooding all over the north of England which caused a landslide in front of our train. We then tried to go back but another landslide then occurred behind our train which left us stranded. We were stuck for 3 hours while they cleared the track, then they took us back and put us on another train which took the long route up to Scotland. That would have been bad enough but that train then caught fire in the middle of nowhere and we had to be evacuated and everyone crammed into the back carriages. I spent 15 hours on a train for a journey that should have taken 5 hours and got home at 4am. What a night!:crying2:

It was still worth it for my 2 days at Wimbledon and getting to see Grigor play live. :worship:

How did you get a flu in two day!!!!

I saw him blew his nose on Monday's practice, but he did really well on Tuesday so I thought that was nothing.
He sounded normal on Wednesday when he went to practice(it rained when he practice, drizzle so no one stop practicing) and also the practice on Thursday morning.
It should be rainy on Thursday(according to the forecast) but a sunshine and windy afternoon that day(I sat there from Batoli's match which made me a little sunburned....) It's weird that the seat manager asked all Grigor's team to sit on the other site which is totally under the sunshine(because it didn't happen in Batoli's match, both players' team sat behind the side the players sat) I'm really surprised when Grigor decided to retire but all his team were really tranquil(perhaps they had driven crazy by the sun.) I asked him about his condition when he walked away from the court he said he's ok(So sorry I can't tell him "if you're ok WTF to retire" coz I'm LADY:p) but he's not willing to talk more. That's all unusual things I thought on Thursday.

Hi Piggy. I was actually behind the baseline, not the service line as I said in an earlier post (I was pretty tired when I wrote that). I was just below the TV cameras with some Bulgarians. It was a perfect seat and there was no way I was leaving it until the end of Grigor's match. I'm glad a few of us got to watch him play and cheer him on. ;)

A flu bug can come from nowhere and wipe out the strongest man. It's bad enough for a normal person but when you are a top-level athlete, running around a court and facing 120+mph serves, it's going to have a massive effect on you. It's unfortunate he had to retire but it's not a reflection on him as a player or a person that he did so, it's just bad luck. Anyone who watched the Anderson match would see how committed and mentally strong he was so he wouldn't have made this decision unless it was absolutely necessary.

Like everyone else on here, I'm disappointed this happened, especially as he was playing so well at Queens and in R1 but we just have to look forward to the Olympics. I really hope he sees this as an opportunity missed and goes into that tournament extra motivated to play his best tennis and do well.

Apart from the fact this was an illness he had no control of, even if he did play badly, he's not letting anyone down. He's not playing for you or anyone else on here, only himself. As fans we can admire his talent, work ethic or character but at the end of the day, he doesn't owe anyone anything. If you are not happy with the work he puts in, go find someone else to support but childish remarks like,"you can find his name in the dictionary right under the word useless" should be posted on the main forum, not here. ;)

I wonder what the deal is with Serena? We assumed the girl he kissed at Queens was his girlfriend but maybe it was just a friend. Whatever the relationship with Serena, I think it's good for Grigor. Serena is about as mentally tough as they come and he certainly showed improvements in that area at Queens and R1 of Wimbledon.

He's on the entry list for Bastad on 09/07/12. He's 9th on the seeding list and if Monfils withdraws, he will go up to 8th. It should be a good chance to get some points and match practice before the Olympics even though it's a clay court event. The only grass event that week is Newport which is THE WORST tournament on the the tour and the crappy courts there would only mess up his game. He never looked like he wanted to be there last year.

Last year Newport was at the same time as Bulgaria's Davis cup relegation play-off with Cyprus and I think the Mouratoglou academy made him play Newport - maybe because of the fact that there was only Isner there and he can get some easy points. I'm sure that he wanted to play for Bulgaria and help the team to stay in the 2nd zone, but maybe he didn't had the word ... Maybe that was the reason he wasn't so motivated and lost early .. I don't know. That's just my thoughts :) I think now he has to go to Sweden and start practicing on the clay and not to sit at Wimbledon and watch Serena's matches. He will probably be seeded, so he won't face any top player at least until the QF, so he has a good chance of winning some points.

1 Ferrer, David (6)
2 Berdych, Tomas (7)
3 Almagro, Nicolas (11)
4 Ramos, Albert (43)
5 Nieminen, Jarkko (44)
6 Kukushkin, Mikhail (52)
7 Dimitrov, Grigor (69)

The 3 WC's are for Robredo (266), Ryderstedt (327) & Lindell (432), so he will stay 7th seed if no one withdraws :)
