RG R4: How many games will Monaco win against Nadal?

A decent test for the God of Clay, but I believe he will send Mugnaco packing losing less than 8 games.

Schwank got 8, at least double that for Monaco

4-6 6-3 7-5 6-2

I think Monaco could get a set if he recovers well enough from the Raonic 5 setter.

Rafa is haunted again, he hits the ball from the forehand side so clearly that only Djokovic can take some sets off him

In their clay match ups, Monaco has not really been able to take more than 2 or 3 games per set. Now, if this was blue clay, or a hard court, I'd say otherwise. Monaco having nearly been beaten to a pulp in a five setter here, I'd have to go with logic and say another 3 set victory for Nadal, losing no more than 3 games per set. The last set vs. Schwank saw a drop in first serve percent as well as first serve winning percent from Nadal, and he would have to know that is unacceptable from here forward this RG.

:haha:

What you don't realize is that tennis is a multi million dollar sport. Do you think Nadal's sponsors want to see Nadal say something like "Yeah, Monaco is a joke he stands zero chance against me"? No. He'd lose endorsments. Instead he says stuff like "Yeah, I'll have to play the match of my life to win, Monaco is a great tennis player..."

Do you really think Nadal thinks he can actually lose to a scrub like Monaco when he sits down for breakfast discussing tennis tactics with his trainer? Shit no. He's probably laughing because he knows he'll cruise in 3 sets.

Nadal even playing at 5% is enough to routine Mugnaco in straights.

yesh222
06-03-2012, 03:53 AM
Monaco should play well. Nadal might run away with a set but at least two will be close and maybe Monaco can get lucky and peak at the right moments to take one if he's at his absolute best. Either that or he's exhausted and just gets run over.

Ok. Monaco.
I'd try to be serious.
If he plays at his BEST-BEST. He could grab a set, specially if Rafa doesn't plays like the claygod he is.

Now... I don't think Monaco will play at his best. But i'm sure he wont be bageled or breadsticked.
I imagine a close first set, with Rafa winning 7-5 or a tiebreak (there is where Monaco can grab the set).

Then. Rafa will win the match with one or two breaks in the following sets.

So, I imagine a serious scoreline like 7-5 6-2 6-4.

So, about 10-12 games without winning a set.

He'll win around 6 or 7.

Just hope murray doesn't make the semis... Am tired of seeing him bend over for nadull. Last year we had to watch that sad spectacle in FO, wimby and US Open. :o

Monaco is very solid from the baseline but this is Nadal on the other side, so his baseline game will not cut it. He neeeds to move Nadal around the court and attack as far as possible (and make very less errors while doing that) - a very tough task.

The reason Schwank was able to keep the result at least a bit decent in sets 2 and 3 (as compared to the usual beatdowns Nadal hands out to most guys on clay) was because Schwank was hitting some really good drop shots, lobs, etc, and making Nadal run around. The variety helped him win a lot of points. Monaco won't be doing any of those and would rely mostly on his baseline game.

VolandriFan
06-03-2012, 06:42 AM
Say Monaco hadn't played that five-setter with Raonic, I'd actually give him a pretty good chance of taking a set. As it stands, maybe a tight set or two.

The strange thing is that Borg's theory, oposite of Roger's, might be actually true - you must play the same game as Rafa to have better chances.

At first sight i disagreed with Borg and thought Roger's is more correct, for example Isner would have better chances against Rafa compared to f.e. let's say Verdasco (who isn't the best example of a typical clay player, but there aren't as many in the top 20 and i don't want to use Ferrer here), but Schwank taking as many games from Rafa, compared to Istomin or similar players, makes me re-think my position.

Maybe Pico will be able to get 10 games or a bit more. A set? i doubt..

This will be a good practice match for rafa to find his range and brush up his backhand particularly and also DTL shots. Match will have lot of long long ralies and Pico will have rafa's serve under pressure in many games. But rafa will prevail in straights maybe losing 10 games.
