Ljubicic regrets 2006 RG SF post-match comments that still upset Nadal to this day

This is from a few days ago, but did anyone else read Ljubicic's interview on Rolandgarros.com? One of the questions he was asked was about his most embarrassing moment in the locker room and here's his answer:

Which locker room joke do you regret?
Iíd actually say I regret certain press conferences. Particularly the one after my semi-final in 2006 here against Rafa. Heís still mad about it, six years later. I still donít know what I could have said for him to still be so upset even today and still hold it against me. But, thatís Rafa, thatís just how he is.

http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/articles/2012-05-27/201205271338115174793.html

I did a little search and here's an article about the incident from 2006:

Ljubicic angered by Nadal tactics

Ljubicic was playing in his first Grand Slam semi-final

Ivan Ljubicic was unimpressed by some of Rafael Nadal's tactics in their French Open semi-final on Friday.
The Croatian was unhappy with how long Nadal took between points and said most players want Roger Federer to win the final on Sunday.

"It's ridiculous how much time he takes between points," said Ljubicic.

"I think the umpire should be more aggressive on that because they gave him one time violation but it didn't seem to change anything."

And Ljubicic, who lost 6-4 6-2 7-6 (9-7), made it clear where his support will be going come Sunday afternoon.

"I would love to see Roger winning," he said. "Everyone in the locker room would.

"He's the best player ever in tennis so it would be nice to see him lifting the trophy here."

Nadal was unconcerned by Ljubicic's comments, saying: "You've got to learn to control yourself when you lose a match, you can't just go about saying anything."

He added: "I've been on the circuit for many years, and I've never had any problems with anybody.

"I've always behaved properly so I'll go on behaving the way I behave, and I'm very happy the way I relate to other people."

And the suggestion that the other players will be backing Federer was also brushed off by the Spaniard.

"Those comments don't bother me because I'm relaxed," he said. "I know that things are fine, and it's not because Ljubicic says that that it's necessarily true.

"A lot of people want me to win, I'm very relaxed and I'm playing well."

I have to say I'm surprised Nadal is, according to Ljubicic, still mad about this incident. Players throw verbal jabs at each other all the time. Ljubicic definitely can be blunt and out of line at times, but this was 6 years ago

But, that’s Rafa, that’s just how he is

another subtle way to diss rafa.

Both are wrong in my eyes: rafa should not take the points so long and should not be so unforgiving after so many years against a critics, but Ljubicic is also wrong, he doesn't seem to have any regret as no apology was offered, so why to said he regrets about the comments, very ironic.

i mean let's be honest Ivan was very unprofessional in that press conference. as though he has any idea what the majority of players wanted at the time, it's one thing to publicly announce he supports Federer after losing (which is pretty fucking bitter), but to say the whole tour wants Nadal to lose? you never hear someone say things this unprofessional, even Roddick doesn't announce that he is deadset on someone losing a match that he's not involved in.

another immature thing for Ivan to do is to generalize Nadal as some jerk who holds grudges. let's be honest, no offense to Ivan who I like, but Nadal is not worrying about him nor ever has. Nadal isn't sitting at home thinking about grudges, he's busy training and getting advised on tactics and improvements by a plethora of people or playing his playstation or on his boat in Mallorca. Ivan's trying to get attention and sounds silly trying to make a nice guy like Nadal seem like some grudge bearing menace. you notice how Ivan doesn't mention when Nadal has been negative towards him since hahah.

Ivan's comments would have more weight if he just had originally and up till now kept them about Nadal wasting time (which is true), but unfortunately in 2006 he made the mistake of acting like a bitter clown and speaking very unprofessionally about the whole tour wanting Nadal to lose, which is both a proposterous and incredibly dumb idea.

I'm dissapointing because Ivan was partly right about Nadal's slowness but then ruined it with bitterness, and to think I always thought Ljubicic was the classiest guy around

06-01-2012, 06:26 AM
This is Ljubicic's mo...he loses a match and then gives petulant pc where he bashes the person who beat him. Then, when confronted, folds like a tent. He did the same thing with Roddick way back in 2003. Andy beat him and Ljub gave this idiotic interview where he bashed Andy(which really read more like an antiAmerican screed). Andy, when he found out, picked up the phone and called him to speak to him directly(something coward lubo would never do)and, of course, Ljubo backed down. Sort of like what just happened over his ignorant comments about Americans at RG. After a little push back, old Ljubo was backpedaling and beeping like a mofo. He's one of the most ungracious, immature, whiny bitches in tennis history.

Just like heaven

I really dont know why Nadal takes so much time between points, he actually averaged 43-45 second between points at the australian open final. Thats the reason why his matches are the longest, i think someone has to give him a point penalty for that, maybe Eva Asderaki should umpire Nadal's matches, we know she doesn't take crap from players.

Ljubo is clever. By pretending to regret his comments he puts attention on those comments again.

His claims were legit. In 2005-2006 somewhere they had a big chance to stop Nadal's blatant bending of rules (read cheating) once an for all but they chickened out and look how it ended up.

Now everyone accepts it like something normal to buttpick for a minute before sending a serve

I'd have said much worse if Nadal continued to take 40+ seconds even after being given a warning... The spaniard constantly usurps the other player's momentum by taking a ridiculous amount of time between points. I don't know whether it's his OCD or whether he does deliberately break the rules, but it's out of order and the umpires really need to get their act together over it.

Funny to see some of you trying to show that Ljubo is a bad person because of these comments.Well, suck it.Because he isn't.
He's still the same good old Ljubo, one of the classiest players on tour.He did a mistake here, and he said he regrets it.

And the mistake wasn't pointing out that Nadal takes too much time between points. He continually does, and no one in the ATP wants to do anything about it.Just because it's Nadal. It's obvious and it's double standards.Ljubo was at least not afraid to say it.What he shouldnt have said is that he wants Federer to win.Roger is his friend and it's understandable and expected that he wanted him to win,but the "whole tour wants him to win" thing was the wrong thing to say and Ljubo is aware of that.
