Roland Garros R2: Murray def. Nieminen 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2

Poor from the Shark, not taking advantage of Murray's problems with his back early on in the match. Where were the dropshots and the lobs to make him smash.

Lendl was chuckling when Murray had the treatment like we reeled one in. Murray when he wins or loses same expression.

Just hope no more back issues for Murray in the rest of the event.

Nieminen should have been defaulted. Or at the very least fined. Had to put in a concerted effort to lose as disgracefully as he did today.

Major respect for Andy to fight through his back injury and come from a set and break down to win. In the end he started moving significantly better and played well. But an awful effort from Sharkko to totally go away the final two sets. Simply couldn't mentally handle the fact Murray didn't retire and was able to compete, never got himself in competition mode. Should be embarrassed with himself.

A mentally stronger player would have taken Murray out early here. Nieminen isn't that. He just collapsed.

What an awful showing from Jarkko, I'm really disappointed. Murray was the favorite here of course but Jarkko started off really well, breaking Murray at the start of the match. Then Murray seemed to start feeling the back and it got worse and worse as the set went on. Jarkko's level dropped drastically but it was enough to win the set. Murray took a massage and painkillers, and found his way back into the match, starting to play MUCH better. Jarkko's level remained shit throughout the rest of the match, winning only 3 games after being 4-2 up in the second set

I went away at 3-1 second set and thought "why doesn't he retire?" Came back to see last game. Can someone (seriously) explain what happened here? Painkillers kicked in or something?

Nieminen is a disgrace to the game and should retire ASAP.

Murray's faking skills have improved a lot though, took some lessons from Nadal and Djokovic.

Awful quality match. Was incredibly lucky that Murray wasn't facing a quality opponent.

Murray wasn't injured, he just served with 120 km/h in the first set just for fun.

Murray fights through the pain to win // Murray fakes like a boss to throw Jarkko off - one or the other according to taste.

Jarrko did seriously brain cramp though, whatever else happened out there and for that he ultimately deserved the loss.

Jarkko would prob have choked a 2-0 set lead anyway. Luckray strikes again.

Topsy-turvy match, this.

Nieminen came out beasting Murray all over the court, hitting ridiculous winners from 10ft behind the baseline - as reflected in the 1st set breadstick.

Then, unfortunately, Nieminen rolls his ankle in a dodgy bit of clay trying to run down a mediocre Murray drop-shot. He never moves the same after that, and Murray, the cold-blooded scavenger, capitalizes as expected.

Looking forward to Giraldo taking this trash out.

I don't really know what to make of that match. Um...I'm glad Murray won, I guess.

Really, Murray vs Nieminen was probably going to be straight-set affair anyway. I don't think it would have mattered even if Nieminen had won 2nd set, as he should have. Even when Nieminen was playing well, Murray just pushed everything back and Nieminen couldn't hit through.

I think we could see exactly why one of these players is ATP #4 and the other one has a staggering 2-10 win-loss ratio in finals in this match.
*Braindead* 'performance' from Nieminen, did he think this match was best-of-1 or something the like? It looked to me that he just stood there waiting for Murray to retire! Whatever he was doing out there, it wasn't playing tennis. A disgrace. :stupid:

Kudos to Murray for hanging in there and making the best out of it. It payed off. :)
Any decent opponent would - and will - kick him off the court in this form though. Stay tuned.

People bashing Nieminen are the most pathetic losers. Yes, he didn't play well, but Murray played well enough to win this. But will probably lose soon tho.

2 days ago a 13 time GS champion couldn't beat a cramping/choking opponent, it happens.

Nemo never recovered from the 2nd set:

*4-3, broken.

3bps at 4-4 in the 2nd ........ misses

*4-5, broken to love, df on first bp.

The mind snapped after that.

Murray was apparently told by Lendl to retire after the first set.

I am disgusted, not only because my favorite lost, but because Murray's behaviour is questionable - as always ?
Why pretending being about to die, unready to serve a proper ball, when 25 minutes later you run like a rabbit after the ball? That, I don't understand.

Andy did not fake injury. He looked in incredible pain at the start of the first set. Muscle spams probably. At the beginning of the 2nd set Andy started to loosen up and the medics started to kick in. Nemo mentally imploded and allowed Andy to get back in the match. Kudos to Andy for not giving up. He is a fighter. This shows what a true courageousness committed sportsman he is.

Stop bashing Nieminen.
Yes, he played a mug match, but Murray was running and playing like a boss in the last two sets. He was looking completely fit on the end, so what could Jarko do except winning a few more games?
He could make the second set tougher, bring it to a tiebreak, or maybe even take it - but Muzza, who played much better by then, would won the next three sets anyway.

What a mysterious back injury though, this Muzza is full of surprises. Jarko was probably thinking of retirement from Muzza at 6-1, but instead of that he got Muzza starting to play better and better.
Have to feel for Jarko.

He's had it for a while now, since Basel. Seems overplaying in the Asian swing was the problem - cautionary lesson against three weeks in a row, perhaps.

Great effort by Murray to win today with a back injury. I thought Andy would retire in this match. And Neiminen losing his game helped Murray as well. A very odd match.

Amazing fightback from Andy.

I laugh at all of you who question Andy's injury. Unlike Nadull and Fakervic, Murray couldn't actually move around the court at all in the first set and he slowly got better as the match went on and in the last two sets, well, he destroyed Nieminen.

Suck it, haters :wavey: Andy survives yet again because of his fighting ability :wavey:

Sore loser? Andy was clearly dead in the first set. He got better as the match went on and Nieminen couldn't handle it. Too fucking bad :wavey:

Not a clue how that happened. Was expecting the match to be over any minute when Murray started tapping in serves. Niemenen just imploded under the pressure.

To people questioning his injury, why the hell would he need to fake injury in this match of all matches? It just wouldn't make any sense.

Clearly Murray's injury is far more serious than we've been led to believe. I hope he doesn't do further damage by playing on. He can't possibly reach the final so if it gets bad he should pull out.
