Awesome fightback from Brian the third and fourth sets. But Gilles is simply too solid and too professional. Great fifth set from Simon to recover after a bad two collapse.

Brian would have won this if it wasn't for his Nice mileage behind him.

Great week and a bit for him though :yeah:

Some of the Frenchies were applauding and cheering his shots, not normal when you're playing a home player.

Bad result for tennis, but that goes without saying.

Still good to see Baker making strides, if he keeps healthy he'll be eating pushers like Simug for breakfast in no time :yeah:

Gear up for Wimbledon now, you champ.

Great fight from Brian. Match turned back in Simon's favour after he recovered from 15-30 in his opening service game in the fifth.

Hope to see much more of Baker come the American HCs. He should break the top 100 soon.

Simon just too solid, well that was to be expected.

Brian showed everything he should have as far as I'm concerned. Started very hesitatingly but slowly came into the game. Once he started playing freely it showed very much on court even against the #11 seed. Then the mental fall in the 5th was expected and the UEs started flowing but still, a great performance. Give this man a couple of months to rack up some experience and he WILL be a force to reckon.

As for Simon, he played without a mistake in the 5th and that's really the best he has to offer. A top 20 mug if there ever was one.

Miracle effort for him to make it to a 5th. Disappointing that he had to lose it 6-0 and couldn't keep it competitive, but that war of a game he lost on serve at 0-1, after hitting some great shots to stay in it, kind of sealed the deal. Hard to recover from that mentally and physically - he needed to keep the momentum with him.

Really like this guy. He's showing up the tour in terms of taking the ball early. Will be a tricky customer on all surfaces, just like Agassi and Davydenko were. I think sadly for him the faster courts of olden days would favor him even more.

And if anything, Simon is more enjoyable to watch than David when he is attacking (See the 2nd set in this match). He is also a very nice guy off the court like David yet he is one of the most hated players in here while David gets a lot of respect.

I really don't get why Simon is hated here - he is much more spunky and enjoyable to watch than Mugray and Ferrer in my opinion. He can go for crazy winners too when he is in a right mood. Very nice player to watch overall:worship:

It's kind of a good thing, really.

He made a strong showing on center court and now gets to rest.

Wawa would've attacked a lot more and that backhand would've been too much to handle in his current state.

I think Ferrer is better than Simon as he attacks more, when needed he mixes it up with some net game. Ferrer is more similar to Monaco than anyone else. Ferrer just a bit better though Monaco is better when he attacks than when Ferrer attacks. I dont get this anger about pushers do you guys expect everyone to play alike, If everyone is a del Potro or Soderling then it will be boring as well hit or miss.

I would much rather watch Ferrer than Simon. Ferrer can and DOES produce very nice points each and every match he plays. You can just see the quality of his hits and the effort he has to put into those shots, but mostly, when he plays I can understand very well why he's easily in the top 10.

Simon on the other hand attacks about once in a blue moon, usually his games are nothing, and I do mean nothing but boring, tedious, relentless back line ball bashing and hoping for the opponent to make a mistake. The 5th set today was a perfect example. He did nothing but stay back and push, Baker made all the mistakes and that set was a bagel... Honestly, with his tennis, can you see him take a match or better yet, a set against the top 3? I doubt he'd have anything to sell against any of the top 7 even because his game is JUST SO BORING. But on a given day, can Ferrer beat these guys? Barring a mental choke, you know he gets his chances even against the top 3. Chances Simon will never get simply for being the relentless pusher he is.

so many posters on here talk so much shit, pusher simon who hit 53 winners in the match to bakers 52, yet baker is applauded by the same foolish posters.

i guess cus gilles doesn't hit 50+ UE's as well to go with the winners it doesn't count.

gilles was totally in control of this match but let his concentration slide in set 3 and baker got on a roll early in set 4 and gilles mentally looked like he was preparing for set 5.

btw here are the stats if any of you posters need proof of gilles hitting more winners than all out attacking great player baker -http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/scores/stats/day9/1205ms.html

as for baker, he has had a nice run and a nice showing on a big court. hope he plays notts so i can watch him live next week and the week after

Don't take most of what you read here seriously-LOL! I don't think Simon and Roger play similar games. Simon is not as physically talented or strong as most on tour, but he is smart enough to get the most out of his abilities. For most here, if one is not a power player, then thy are not enteraing enough to watch or good players. Unfortunately, power has overtaken the game, which makes most matches somewhat predictable.

USO crowd when Agassi played, South American ones are far more hostile.

But that's what tennis is about. Every crowd shouldn't be a tea-drinking strawberry eating happy clapper factory.

French crowd like a certain brand of tennis and they respect certain players more than others. Rafa/Nole tards need to GTF over it.

Shows how popular Simon is in his own country that his opponent was getting a share of the crowd support/applause.

Well keep in mind that the French love a good underdog story, moreso than any other Slam audience in the world. They go nuts for underdogs, especially ones with a sense of style.

Watching Cirstea upset Jankovic here on the women's side in 2009 was an amazing display from the crowd, and that was vs. the same high-ranked woman who was the beloved upstart/underdog vs. Henin two years prior.

Because he doesn't need to. See that 11 next to his name? He's doing something right.

Really wanted Baker to win, but I love Simon. As a park hack, that is the type of style I try to emulate. Yes, of course I'm not 1/100th as good as Simon, but that style works so well in league and tournament play. But you have to be really fit to pull it off.
