Roland Garros R2: [3] Federer def. Ungur 6-3 6-2 6-7(6) 6-3

Better than the first round. Ungur is an awesome shotmaker with his backhand and hit some blazing returns, hit some special shots and maintained decent consistency to win the third set.

Roger in cruise control mode, hasn't really been seriously tested yet. Served well today, hit the forehand pretty well throughout, but hit too many shanked backhands and loose errors in general. He'll need to start picking it up.

Now really.
Ungur played a great match. I insist, he's a great player. Top 50.

Roger:
Serving: Good, keep it on.
Forehand: Good.
Backhand: CRAP! Improve this, NOW!
Movement: Has been worse, but he needs to improve.

Really, Roger. You can do it way better. And I think he will.

I don't wanna see sleeperer in court anymore.

Ungurīs backhand is orgasmic, when he hit the superslice dropshot in first set when the ball completely changed the direction I thought my testicles are going to explode. Also I was amazed how lightly his style looks...Winning a set against Federer in GS is surely a nice experience, just shame he is not always playing the same.

Maestro played alright, opponent played out of his skin (well they all do v Fed dont they, never v NoleDal - see Bolelli)

concentration garbage though and too relaxed at times, he seems to not be investing much here, think he's putting all his eggs into Wimbledon/Olympics this year i sense

Excellent display of tennis from Ungur in that 3rd set, rightfully and dservedly taking advantage of a serious mental check-out by Feds. Too bad he couldn't keep it up thereafter.

Feds has some work to do, this level won't cut it against Berdych, let alone against Djoko or even Rafa.
I trust him to be able to, though. Hopefully this match will serve as the necessary wake up-call.

I missed the first rd and the first two sets of today's match too, but god Roger was really awful from what I saw. If this is what is a better showing...:help:

Yes, although Connors missed R.G. during his peak years (1974-8) & never played the A.O. after 1975. Had he consistently entered all the slams his record would have been untouchable.

I thought before the tournament started that the semis would be a decent result for Fed. Now I'm starting to think the quarters would be. On the other hand, there are certain parallels with 2009....

Federer is a specialist of winning matches despite losing match point-up sets

He's got good mindset, I remember what he said after beating Malisse 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-3 in Toronto 2005 - in that match was two points away in the 2nd set though. It was something like:

"I don't care if I lose a set being close to win a match because I know that my opponent still needs to win at least 24 points against me which isn't easy". :D

What is wrong with all these people asking if federer is playing as good or better as in 2006. This shit came up again on espn and cahill and fowler say yeah he is. Wrong. Roger did everything better back than. He's maybe gotten a little bit more consistent on the backhand when he plays against nadal since it's not like his backhand EVER had problems playing against anyone else but nadal on clay with his crazy topspin. Its not like federer is going to say yeah i was better back then since having a psychological advantage in tennis can make the difference.

As far as his chances this year. The balls have been slowed down from last year which may help federer against someone like berdych in the quarters who would have just killed that light ball last year. Since the ball is much much heavier, fed has a better shot to get through a berdych.

A big part of roger beating novak last year has to be the lighter balls which really let fed go insane on his serve and really hit more winners both huge factors in his victory over nole last rg 2011. This year if he meets novak and having to play with heavy balls. I see novak in 4 sets at the most. It certainly didn't help novak to not have a match between sunday-friday when he played roger. When they meet this time, I don't think it'll be anything like last year since federer is certainly not playing like he started roland garros 2011 and may have just peaked this year too early from playing more than his usual. We'll see in the next week.

Fed should have gone with his instinct and skipped rome. He was injured going into the madrid final and I can see his movement isn't as fluid nor is his serve which may be due to his hip/back issues from madrid. The rest week would have helped him and honestly losing to djokovic only gives that guy even more confidence if they were to meet in a semi which may not even happen if fed runs into berdych playing lights out.

I think Roger can't beat Berdych in his current form.

But I also think he'll play 20 times better when he reach QF.
Remember AO, vs Tomic/Delpo (specially Delpo) he played 10 times better than vs Kudryavstev/Karlovic.

Even in Indian Wells (I know he was sick, but whatever), he started playing good tennis vs Delpo.

In last years USO, he played a not-so-good match vs Cilic and a great match vs Monaco.

So, I believe he'll play better.

Roger in cruise control mode, hasn't really been seriously tested yet. Served well today, hit the forehand pretty well throughout, but hit too many shanked backhands and loose errors in general. He'll need to start picking it up.

Olderer losing a set on clay to a futures level clown :haha:

Just shows how much his clay game has declined from 2006 :o

He should thank his lucky stars his draw is full of clay juggernauts like Mahut.

Do all futures level players have backhands like that?

I've lost count how many sets Rafito has lost to social tennis clowns on hard court.

In 2006 - Olderer was a great clay courter. He beat everyone on clay except Nadal and had the best clay match of the decade where he had MP (2006 Rome final)

In 2007 he declined significantly.

From 2008+ he was pretty much a clay clown, only capable of good performances on ultra fast clay (Madrid).

List of his losses on slow red clay? Melzer, Gasquet, Gulbis, Montanes.

He got taken to 5 by Haas and Del-Bashtro in 2009 and only won because former is a choker and latter is no fitness clown.

He can still play a good clay match (RG semi 2011), but he can't be consistent on a surface that rewards consistency.

Federer played well. At least well enough to get through to the 3rd round. I don't see why we focus so much on these early matches, it is always important for the top players to ge through them.

You can be rest assured that Federer will raise his game as the tournament progresses. However, whether that level will be enough against the likes of Berdych or Djokovic (or Nadal, though, that result is never in doubt even if Federer plays his best tennis) is a different question.

Does it hurt you that he has a RG crown? For a clay mug, he's won quite a few clay tournaments over the years... Losing 10 finals against Rafa isn't anything to be ashamed of, sans Rafa, he'd have the records for RG along with everything else.
