The Frenchman was 7-6 *4-3 40-0 up. Major missed opportunity for ERV, as JMDP was looking very negative through the first half of the match. As soon as ERV allowed Juan back in, there was only going to be one winner.

A lot better serving the final three sets and more aggressive, offensive play from Juan after falling behind in set two, cut out the bad errors, started moving better. All things considering, not a bad performance after the first 1 1/2 sets, something he can build on vs Cilic. Good to see some fire from Juan at the end.

Very tough win for Delpo. Let's hope his knee isn't too serious.

Pff, that was really far too tough. I was really worrying after 7-6 4-3, as he was playing pretty poorly and didn't have the good attitude to turn a 0-2 around.
Even when he won the second set and you'd think that he would be okay, he still had lots of problems. Had 15-40 at 4-3 and 0-30 at 5-4, but won both games. In the fourth things went easier, but not good that he spent 3,5 hours on court with that knee. But he didn't call for the doctor this time, did he? That's a good sign.

Shame because Edouard played a nice match, those dropshots:drool: But missed many chances there.

ERV is such a massive choker

Edouard  nice fight though.
Is JMDP always that erratic?

Del Potro is a tremendous fighter, but the road should end here. No way is he getting past Cilic with his current hampered movement. Either the knee is sorted out or he's out in round 3. Hope it doesn't at least affect the rest of the season.

Vasselin is a massive choker, otherwise he'd the one in round 3.

Poor choke by ERV given Del Potro looked physically cooked after set one.

Delpo interview:
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/interviews/2012-05-30/201205301338389416151.html

Q. We're all a bit worried about your knee. How do you feel?

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: Well, yes, this is something that bothers me. This is true. It's a constant bother. So what I try and do is not to think about it. I try and do my best with my tennis. And when I'm out there on the court I try not to think too much about the fact that it really bothers me.

So today and tomorrow I'll continue with my treatment and the necessary practice, what I usually do. I want to be ready when I'm on the courts.

Q. So you've talked about your knee, and your knee is something that really bothers you on the right‑hand side mainly when you're serving?

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: Yes. This is an injury that really bothers me when I'm trying to find the right stance when I'm serving. You know, if you're not strong enough on your legs, it's difficult for you to play some shots more than others, by the way. This is something difficult to manage.

But I try not to think about it at all. What's important for me is to be right there on the courts, to be aggressive, offensive all the time, even though, as I said, it bothers me so that I can dictate the game so that it wouldn't be even worse.

Q. Did you feel a little better or would you say that it has worsened?

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: No, it has not worsened. The trend is rather positive.

So big yet so fragile

Keep hanging in there and fighting as much as you can and eventually you will win your second Slam title, Juan

Delpo shoulda sat this one out, has he not learned from his mistakes??? I really hope this does not affect him in the long run.

Just take a break man, get better and then come back and bite some GS gold again :)

OK, Del po said the knee was bothering him when he was serving. If it's only then I believe he might still stand a chance of even beating Berdych as his serve was never outstanding.

apart from the serve, his footwork is clearly not as good as usual

That is not very promising with regards to his chances further ahead... I mean why now, Del GOATro? You had to take out Berdych and make yourself useful to your master . Argh :scared:.

Maybe Delpo should retire and let the knee heal: Wimbledon, Olympics, Canada, Cincy, USO... The commies were saying it's only 90 days to the USO. Packed part of the season.

He's already defended his 90 points from last year.

I guess he could beat Cilic and Berdych if his movement improves just a bit. Cilic is usually very erratic and Berdych is a great match-up for Del Potro: all their matches in slow courts were routine wins for Juan. He's just more powerful and consistent than Tomas, which is really all that matters in that match-up between two big hitters. Tomas doesn't exactly have the variety to fully expose Del Potro's decreased movement, and the same for Cilic. These are not exactly the kind of players who can take most advantage of his movement troubles.

Should this scenario come to pass, though, the QF will probably be a bloodbath. Federer is the worst match-up on tour for Juan, he has developed a huge mental block against him after coming back from injury and he's diminished physically (he needs to be at his best to have any chance against Federer). Translation: Federer in easy 3 sets. Fed will just dropshot him to death.

More likely though is that Federer will face either Cilic or Berdych in the QF, can't see a diminished Del Potro make it through such great players, even if they are great match-ups for him. I'm sure he will fight as he always does, but smart money would be on Cilic and especially Berdych.

Now why would Del Potro do something so reasonable. You're just being silly here. Better to play a few more matches, get a few more points and endanger an Olympic season and your whole career .

ERV is the 1st guy Delpo played, then lost to after he won the USO, I think ERV is just maybe a poor matchup for Delpo, and one of the very few guys ranked lower than him who gives him trouble, but on clay Delpo maybe has an edge.
