Roland Garros R1: [4] Murray def. Ito 6-1 7-5 6-0

Ito had 5 all, 40-0 on return to serve for the second set. Didn't take it, and the match was effectively over.

Ito showed at times in the match he does have some very good ballstriking ability. But Murray's simply too good defensively, too good of a mover, too experienced and too slick. Good serving from Andy, moved the ball around the court fairly well, but he'll need to play better against better opponents, which he undoubtedly will. Got too passive in the second set and it almost cost him but picked it up well when he needed to.

Good little test for Andy.
Andy is going home by QF
You came to that conclusion based on one match? I guess Nadal was going to lose early last year because he was taken to 5 by Isner....oh wait, he won.

Andy is going home by QF

Why do you say that? Federer/Djokovic were hardly amazing in their first match either, are they also out before the QF?

Murray's second set tactics were a joke, although third set was a lot better.

Ito :yeah: Stunk the first set out but the lad can hit a ball. Definitely impressed given it was clearly his worst surface.

Ito played a few good games in the second set but that was it.

Andy needs to improve if he's going to defend SF points, even someone like Gasquet will beat him playing like that.

Ito has a lot of room for improvement, his shot selection for one, and he can definitely imrpove his footwork on clay.
But he has a pretty good potential to be a solid top 50 player I think. At least he has a more powerful serve than Kei.

Hope Murray won't be too much bothered by the hip problem.

Solid enough from Andy overall. Ito got hot in the second set and would and given many of the top players a problem there, he couldn't maintain that level though.

Apart from the 2nd set Murray was not tested at all in this match. Tatsuma can definitely play, but gets easily bamboozled by a clever player like Murray.

It'll be very hard against Ferrer but I think he can do it.

Andy played when he wanted it could have easily triple bageled Ito but just laid off a bit in the second set, after that he wiped the floor clean.

(Just saw the reply :P)

For the most part, comfortable for Murray. Didn't have to play great or anything but was too good in the end.

Ito made the second set quite interesting though. He seems like an all or nothing player, which makes him exciting to watch.

Andy losing 6 games to world no.68 equals out by Quarters.

Djokovic and Federer losing 10 games equals lock for semi's.

Great logic MTF.

I doubt Ferrer can beat Murray.I mean he is great on clay but Andy deals with those type of players with ease

Reaching the semis has nothing to do with the number of games you lose in round 1.

The reason why Federer and Djokovic are expected to make semis and Murray isn't as much has nothing to do with their first round results/performances. But you already knew that, didn't you?

Ferrer usually gives Andy hard matches. It'll be a tough match.

Sure, but people seem to be basing their arguement on Murray going out early because he lost 6 games to someone ranked 68 in the world which is just stupid.

If I was Andy I would concentrate on getting to Nadal, not beating him. This sort of belief shown above would be better served at the other 3 majors in which he has a much better chance than here. Andy beating, Ferrer - Nadal - Djokovic on clay in a row? Almost impossible.

If Murray can get to Ferrer, Ferrer will obviously beat him.

I I were Murray I'd concentrate on keeping that slam SF streak going - don't even think about reaching further than that cuz it won't happen.

What do Federer and Djokovic have to do with Murray? Okay, sure they're both human and both tennis players but I don't see any other reason to compare them.

Satsuma is one player I've had an eye on over the last year, and hasn't disappointed - really ballooned up the rankings.

Big stage fright here though, got going nicely in the 2nd, then gave up in the third. You can't really expect to beat the world number #4 if you only play decent stuff for a set ........ and don't even take your chances there.

As a Murray fan, i would comment that Ferrer is exactly the sort of match Murray needs before facing Nadal. Here's to hoping they both get there, as based on previous clay encounters it will likely be a gruelling test for both that will hold the winner in good stead for a SF showdown with the champ.
