Escape for Jeremy. Was up 6-4 6-1 *5-3 and cruising. Lu was *3-2 in the fifth set and choked badly, double faulting to lose the break. Chardy needed five match points in the fifth to close it out.

Jeremy played pretty well to take the lead he did through the first three sets, Rendy was very negative, wasn't returning well, made a major amount of loose errors. But as soon as Jeremy served for it, he fell off the cliff and made tons of ridiculous errors all over the place and started hanging his head, and didn't recover until Rendy let him back in the match in the fifth set.

Ultimately, both guys had huge opportunities to close this out sooner, and Rendy will look at this as a failed one to get a rare clay-court win. Jeremy's serve really came through for him in the end, hit bomb after bomb, and played a solid final game with a great slice BH when Rendy was at the net, an aggressive return at 30-*15 and a good passing shot to win. Very good win for Jeremy, would have been heartbreaking for him to lose this.

Jeremy...that was lucky. Would've been the worst choke of all time if it had happened.

Good to see that Chardy kept his cool after missing so many match points, especially the triple MP he had at 9-8 on Lu's serve

One of the EPIC matches of RG 2012 ..............:worship:

So many tight/long matches. Why? Hot weather = extra slow courts and everybody is getting to the balls?

epic indeed !
Chardy had 1 MP at 6-4, 6-1, 5*-3 then choked it
He had 1 MP at 8-7 on Lu's serve
He had 3 MP's at 9-8 on Lu's serve (it was 0-40).
The sixth MP was the good one !

Lu had also a break in the fifth, he broke at 2-2 and in the next game... he did 3 DF's  Chardy needed it a lot at this moment !!

Chardy would have had nightmares about this match for years if he had lost this. Lu had his first break point of the match at 4-6 1-6 3-5* on a Chardy double fault.

Wrong, the courts are faster when the weather is hot and the ball bounces higher. The courts are laid on limestone base, sun dries out the court therefore conditions are quite quick relatively speaking. The ball is heavier this year.

Too bad the king of clay clowns couldn't beat the ballbashing buffoon.

Pretty slow conditions this year despite the weather.

Atrocious result for tennis.

Chardy :cheerleader:. I'd love for him to get confidence again. In 2009 he was almost in the top 30.

Surprisingly close scoreline considering Lu has only ever played 14 matches on clay in his 11 year pro career. From those, he won only 2. One of those wins was against Fernando Verdasco on the outdoor carpet courts of Madrid last year, and the other against an unranked Pakistani in the Davis Cup 11 years ago.

Surprisingly Lu fought against Chardy on clay until 5sets.
Unfortunately he couldn't win:sad: But grass court season comes soon. Grass suits for Lu.
He should prepare for Wimbledon right now:D

Good win, Chardy:D

What, Serena's choke today wasn't bigger and I hardly think this would be the biggest choke ever.

Haha, that was after this game, besides this was in 5 rather than 3.

One thing you can't deny is Chardy's smoldering good looks. No amount of ball abuse can take that away from him.

Always sad to see Lu lose, he's just so cute with those little panda eyes.

Did someone replace Chardy with De Voest at 5-3 in set 3?

Nobody does that against Lu on clay.

Women can't play 5, so that's not relevant here. :p
