Yes! Brian looked to be getting tight at the end but managed to come through and take the win :)

It was a good match by Brian, he was the one taking control of most of the rallies until the end of the third set, he was the more consistent player and he attacked X-Man's second serve. Xavier didn't serve well enough and the backhand to backhand rallies heavily favored Brian, Brian dropshotted X-Man effectively as well.

Malisse played well to come from a break down in the third set, started taking control of many more of the points and hit some big forehands, but made a couple loose errors in the tiebreak and it cost him. They're pretty similar players but Brian did everything 10% better. Very good win, the comeback continues to get more spectacular!

X-man was absolutely shocking.

Good for Baker though, nice game and bloke. :yeah:

Point at 4-4 in 3rd set tiebreak, Malisse hits a massive forehand return, Baker barely has time to recover to his baseline after the serve. What does he do? He fucking volleys the return into the court for a winner. LIKE A BOSS.

Pretty mediocre match, I think. But glad to see Brian prevail.

Malisse was his useful whinging self. He has such a piss-poor on-court attitude, I don't understand how anyone could support him.

Yes, good job Bakes. Great stats for him too.

Wish his serve was bigger though, it looks very weak. Worked ok today I guess

He should have a good shot against Simon, can certainly play creative enough to hurt him, along with a killer 2nd serve return.

Baker continues his good form. Malisse has no consistency right now, hit a lot of good and bad shots.

I really think he has a good shot against Simon.

On clay for sure, fairly confident he is better on the surface than Fish or Harrison

Given that Simon's second serve is his weakest shot, and Baker's second serve return is his best shot, I think Brian should be able to take down Simon in 4.
I also think that if Simon brings his A-game, Brian is mature enough to not get frustrated at it.

I hope to see a 5 set epic between Baker and Wawrinka in round 3 :worship:

Congrats on the win! :cheerleader:

I love his ballstriking. His defense and second serve suck though.

But when playing against Gilles Simon, you don't really need defense. He is patient enough to wait for the right shots to go aggressive on and I think he will be able to outmaneuver and outsmart Simon

his defense is not bad at all

I think Baker will beat Simon, just watching him today he is the exact kind of player that can pull Simon side to side and whack the ball past him

Baker is the next Golubev

haha Baker is way more talented than Golubev, have you been watching him play or are just trolling?

he is very consistant and plays smart, there is no doubt if his body holds up he will consistantly rise in the rankings... and BEST of all: he is not a headcase, thank the heavens

benji47
05-28-2012, 08:13 PM
When he does go for a defensive play he's capable of getting a lot of shots back to play. The problem is he often doesn't even try to chase some of the shots that are totally within his reach.

SapELee
05-28-2012, 08:14 PM
And? I'd rather a player's weakness was his defensive game.

Can't argue with that, but if he really wants to compete with the best (the top echelon) he needs to improve them.

is this Baker just another Bogo/Dodig '12 edition or the real deal?

Completely different class of player. Dodig is a trier/scrapper, Baker is a pure talent.

I rather suspect his returns won't be as effective on quicker courts though, and his defensive game will be really exposed. Still, he's fun to watch on clay - I saw his matches last week, very impressive.

Simon is a lot different player than Malisse. Today was really a ballstriking festival. Simon is going to make it a dogfight. That doesn't mean Brian won't win but it's a different situation.

Baker quote:
"I play probably a little different than the typical clay-court player, I guess," he said. "Still try to take the ball pretty early and maybe a little more aggressive on second serve returns than some other players." http://espn.go.com/tennis/french12/story/_/id/7977050/french-open-why-brian-baker-never-gave-up

Yeah, he has a bit of the Nalbandian about him, on clay at least. There are a few aggressive early hitters on clay, but they're mostly ball mashers like Andujar. Hardly any combine it with craft.

It's an attractive game, no question.

He just seems to hate being on the court: he should just retire and let hungry Players take his place. Luckily Goffin is here to save Belgium. Luckily Bakers awesomeness kept me hanging on :p

I know that sometimes his attitude on the court isnít so great, but Iíve seen Malisse several times off the court when there were no cameras or reporters around ó and really almost no one around ó when heís been the absolute nicest person to fans. Iíve seen him actually engage in a conversation with fans where he asks them questions about themselves. Obviously a top ranked player couldnítí do this because a crowd would mob him, but Iíve also seen lowly ranked tennis players be rude to fans in these circumstances. Malisse won me as a fan not just because heís a talented, if inconsistent, guy, but also because heís been so incredibly sweet off the court.

Yes I know he is a very likeable offcourt, but my criticism is directed towards his on court mentality, his approach tothe game. He just doesn't seem to enjoy himself playing and he doesn't seem hungry anymore. He has never been a hard worker, but right now It's just pathetic, just look at how fat he is. He should do himself and his fans a favour and retire. And I mean this seriously, It's no typical MTF conclusion.

I really really want to see this :(

It was not that impressive, he had a good reflex on a deep and fast FH return of Malisse. Funny to watch but not the "point of the year". I like Baker's game and with his story, you can only support the guy but he's going to be overrated after his recents goods matches. He has talent, yes, coming back after a break of 7 years shows it, but it's not in the league of players like Nalbandian or Davydenko...

He was beating Djokovic, Tsonga, Monfils, Wawrinka, all the guys in his generation consistently as a junior. It's obviously it's a different ball game now. We know, he knows, the whole freaking world knows. Still, what he's done is amazing.

he's playing good, and is definitely not far from a level that is capable of beating the same players he beat then. it's not as though he dissapeared 100 percent from tennis, he coached and kept playing at a college

Sometimes there are threads about the meaning of talent when it comes to tennis here. I think being off the tour for ~7 years and coming back and doing what he's doing is a perfect example of someone who simply has raw talent for tennis. What surprises me is that he doesn't even look that coordinated just walking around.

Also, to put this in perspective look at how hard it is for Donald Young to win one match.
