Roland Garros R1: [11] Simon def. Harrison 3-6 7-5 6-4 6-1

Harrison had 6-3 *5-4 40-15, and was up a break in the third set.

Complete collapse from the American, but Gilles deserves credit for hanging in when things were ugly through the first two sets, where he was struggling with the wind, struggling with his serve, and making tons of errors.

Harrison was playing pretty well and really dominating the points through the first 1 3/4 sets. Simon's game was super passive and unimposing, hitting very short and allowing Ryan to dictate. Everything changed when the wind started kicking in and Ryan served for the second set. Really unfortunate, but a good win for Gilles, never played anywhere near his best, but a win is a win.

Simon had no business winning this match. Ryan played extremely well for the first set and a half and the 3rd set. The big points still prove elusive for the American. He grew frustrated very quickly and when that happened his game fell off dramatically. I think if Ryan was 5 years older he would have won this 3-0

Yeah, Ryan did kind of throw this away. He reminds me massively of Ryan Atwood from The O.C.- not only because they look similar but because they're both rather temperamental.

Maybe should point out that Harrison has had some pretty tough first round draws in the last few slams though - Soderling, Dodig (who he beat before he got Ferrer in r2), Cilic, Murray, Simon.

He had chance to win in 3.. damn Ryan, same shit all over again

Simon had me worried there in the start.

Good for him to get through this.

Extremely well is too much. Ryan played decently, but he couldn't keep it up and he couldn't handle the wind. The wind came in and Ryan didn't alter the gameplan. He kept smacking at the ball, and missed. Then he got passive, and Simon got into points and started dictating more. He had no idea what it was going to take to win. He didn't deserve to take it here. Mentally weak and strategically ignorant.

Don't like Simon's game but I have so much respect for him, hoping he does well here in front of his home crowd. :D

Harrison did everything he could to lose today. I like his attitude but I have to say he can let his emotions rule his tennis.

Gilles was torturing Harrison, once Harrison got some chance then Gilles just took them back and played better.
Gilles should rise his level next round, good luck!

Atleast I don't have to worry about a replacement for the petulant American douche I hate once Roddick retires.

he pleaded with me so i gave him a BJ ;)

anyway gilles wasn't playing well and ryan was, but gilles is much mentally tougher than the likes of ryan. by the end of the match gilles was playing better. im just happy gilles got this win and made it through, as im sure he is.

as for harrison i really do like him and his game, but damn is he hot headed, i cant remember watching him where he doesn't get a warning. he seriously has to sort that out if he ever wants to be anything other than a talented nutjob.

The amount of matches Simon escapes from is laughable... Harrison was cruising. Similar, though not quite as extreme, as GGL against him the other week. And of course The Fog in Madrid.

well when you finally realise tennis is as much in the mind as it is actual play you might understand gilles has something they don't. however i doubt you will ever grasp that and continue to troll his results threads as usual.

Funnily enough I do realise that very well and accept that Simon is a very good tennis player and is mentally strong. I just really dislike his game - I've merely made a few comments about matches he's won which have mainly been in part to opponents' meltdown/bad play - if you don't think Simon needed quite a bit of luck to win when Harrison was 6-3 5-4 *40-15 then w/e. So quit the sanctimonious BS.

And MTF has no shortage of useless hating posters such as yourself. Why don't you save all those fancy gifs for a player that actually deserves one. Ryan Harrison is an amazing competitor and awesome tennis player and athlete. You and the throngs of posters like you, are the ones ruining this forum.

what luck? he didn't have an outrageous net cord, he played those points on their merits and that is why he is #12 and ryan isn't.

if anything ryan needed help from gilles, the only set ryan won gilles had stats of 4-13 W/UE. when gilles got control of his game, got depth and cut his UE's down it showed ryan doesn't yet have both the game and attitude to deal with play to that standard.

absolutely no luck at all. Simon played crap until Harrison served for the set at 40-15, then he played a string of superb points, taking the initiative and being aggressive (even went to the net) to break and close the set. I don't know how he found his form all of the sudden, but Harrison collapsed only at a much later stage. not liking his game is one thing, though when he is on he is very enjoyable to watch

Ryan couldn't even get a 1st serve in that game. Prior to that he was cruising on his serve and Simon was clearly frustrated by his serve for the most part. I think the meltdown kinda started when he was arguing with the umpire towards the end of the 2nd set. Had he kept calm, he would have been more focused and had he closed out the 2nd set, his shoulder would have open up for the rest of the match. So I think that Ryan has helped Simon in that sense.

I only wish grisha had half the drive and belief that Ryan does minus the over the top hot headeness of course. Plus I fell he is improving his game all the time. He's a better player than he was last year. He's a lot more variety in his game than the duck for example. He's not a mental midget but he needs to calm down a little

As for Gilles...well I'm happy that he won and I hope he can go far. Who's next for him ?

Because it was on Harrison's racket - he was cruising on serve the whole match & then couldn't buy a first serve at all - (pretty sure he later DFed to lose the set as well?), and lost 4 games in a row. Yes, some of that was to do with Simon, but most of it was Harrison dropping his level. Obviously I agree that Simon is the better player, no question, results speak for themselves.
