Players retiring when facing MP

Why do players do that??? It's a disgrace, it's very disrespectful to their opponent, it's like saying: you're not worthy of beating me on the court. It should be punishable.
I remember two matches from this season when a player retired from MP>
1. today Bogomolov at Roland Garros retired to Clement at 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 4*-5 40-AD
2. 24/02/2012 Dancevic at Wolfsburg Challenger retired to Janowicz at 6-7 3-5* 0-40
do you remember any other matches? What do you think of these players?

Did Dolgopolov retire against Fed in Basel on MP?

Nope, it was 6-4, 5-2 15-15 there, but Bogomolov retired on MP against Kunitsyn in one grass tournament last year too...also Pashanski did it, I think multiple times.

I think Fed was about to serve for the match. And it was a genuine injury anyway.

Tipsarevic against seppi in a final.

I remember that, last year in Eastbourne, but it wasn't on MP yet, it was in that final game 3-5*, Seppi was 15-0 up and then Tipsarevic retired. He should've finished those 3 points though

Bogo last year against Kunitsyn at 4-6 6-6(3:6), so Kunitsyn has one tie-break won less in his acivity ;)

Totally agree. Nothing worse. Except maybe fake half middle fingering someone's palm Serbian style during a handshake:p

no not yet, Bogomolov retired before the last game, before Rosol could've served it out. I guess Bogomolov does that a lot, what an ass, can't take a loss like a man

ok, well it's pretty much just as bad. It was a final too though which makes it worse. he's only been on tour for about a year and this is the 3rd time already:o

I think so but I'm not sure.

Was Stakovsky mp down that time he retired in the final game against Murray in Dubai?

Stakhovsky couldn't move.

I wouldn't hold today against Bogomolov, the guy could barely stand. Clement obviously realised this too as he gestured to the crowd to stop jeering him. This was most definitely not a case of unsportsmanlike behaviour.

If serving and they can't serve then retire. If recieving it's much worse. As long as they can stand up they could just let a serve whistle past them.

If they are "too injured" to do even that I expect to see them leave the court in a stretcher

Such a disgraceful act.

I'd rather die on court than retire in such a situation.

Correct.
Clement - not an angel himself btw ;) - wouldn't have gestured to the crowd to make them stop if he'd have felt that Bogo was able to continue playing.

that onewas fixed
mesaros was serving 6-5 30-0

if prodon would have finished the match, mafia would have killed him

Did any of you watch the game today?? Bogomolov wasn't even a break down, it was 5-4 Clement but he was serving and he retired cause he couldn't even serve the last point even though he tried as much as he could.

It was damn sad to see the effort of a 5 set game going to waste like that, it was not a douche move like you're all trying to make it look.

as a competitive tennis player. let me just say that an opponent quitting on MP is ok with me. i like winning fancy but at the end of the day a win is a win. so many things can happen in match point and an opponent helping me out by retiring is not a bad thing in my book

Stakhovsky retired against Murray at 7-6 3-6 3-5 (0-30)

Similar case in the final game: Novak d. Santoro 6-1 6-0 5-1 (30-0) - US Open '99 (3rd rd)

It was one point. All he had to do was hit the ball into the net twice to end the match honourably. Instead he had to be a complete ***hole and retire to spite an old timer who's still in much better shape than he is. Bogomolov is a rubbish player anyway who's overanked in the top 50. He probably won't even make the main draw next year.

Bogo is useless and finished as the main tour level player and I agree that is better to serve underarm (or DF) standing in one place than retiring at match point :o but as chenx15 mentioned I don't think it was a problem for Clement to play one ball more or not. He saw the opponent was barely standing so I don't think a return winner could give him more joy than the way the match was concluded.

 I firstly thought about how in the hell Novak Djokovic was beating Santoro in 99
Then yes, Jiri Novak.

No I remember I had a bet on Seppi this day and it was void because of Tipsarevic's retirement in the final game but there was no MPs...

Seppi was serving at 15*-0 and then Janko retired /no MPs/. Tipsarevic hurt himself badly at 3-4 0*-15 though
