Roland Garros R1: Ungur def. Nalbandian 6-3 5-7 6-4 7-5

One of these matches you see where the scoreline doesn't tell the story. Ungur totally outplayed Nalbandian from the baseline and was the more consistent player as well. David was 1/11 on BPs. But Ungur deserves credit here. Good serving and some awesome backhand winners. Dictated play pretty much throughout, made David move, and David just made too many bad errors, and didn't return consistently well.

Ungur hit an ace on BP in the final game.

Nalbandian peaks for Davis Cup.

Ungur excellent win for him totally deserved, just hope he can play well against Fed in the next round.

I kept saying, Ungur can beat Nalbandian, why are you writing Nalbandian in R2? This isn't 2007 Nalbandian. He was outplayed. Ungur is a better shotmaker than Nalbandian is, anyway, at this point in their careers on this surface.

Poor Rogie and his oh so tough draw. He may as well not take to court in R2 to avoid certain embarassment.

Awful performance by Nalby though.Staying for every return 10m behind the baseline and putting weak returns into play

Awesome result for Ungur. Beating a former top 3 player and then being able to play against Fed on Chatrier. Life dosen't get any better than this for a guy who didn't made it to top 100 untill he was 27.

David is only in it for the Davis, and at this point I'm not sure whether I prefer Pico over David for singles against Berdych et al. if we are to put up a clay court

:eek: To me this was a huge upset. Nalbandian has been in form this year, and Ungur hasn't played many main tour matches. He is a talented player though.

I keep on wondering why people continue to expect so 'much' from Nalbandian. Yes, he can play fantastically but only does so in about 1% of all of his matches - during about 1% of the time in those matches.
It's not 2005 anymore, folks.

I, for one, just like watching Nalbandian play. I never expected him to beat Federer or anything. I don't think anyone expects him to win anything big at this point, we just like to watch him play (at least that's how I feel).

Although he could do it, declining players can play their best at times too. Remember Safin who had done nothing in a very long time beating Nole in W2008? Talent doesn't just evaporate and it can strike when you least expect it.

A solid baseline player cannot give Roger any threaten which FERRER tells us a lot.

A huge shame for David but he has struggled at the grand slams for about 5 years now.

From my point of view all I want is some more opportunities to watch him play in televised or streamed matches. I've never really cared that much about his results, just the opportunity to watch the King of Córdoba in the action.

A strong performance and a well deserved victory by Ungur.

Dini
05-28-2012, 06:52 PM
Some of those dropshots that Nalbandian attempted from behind the baseline were the complete definition of tennis brain haemorrhage. I don't want to write him off but looking clueless against Ungur does not bode well. Having said that, a completely different surface (in theory) coming up next so another chance to get utterly disappointed.

Good to see this overrated mug sent packing in the first round. Fatbandian proving once again what a joke he is on red clay. Just another flat hitting grinder with pretty BH for the fangirls to drool over. No wonder he couldn't win a single slam in his career. Most overrated player of 2000's.

Clay is his 2nd best environment after indoor HC.

Right now? will you honestly tell me he will do better than let's say Monaco in clay? I doubt it, he's a great indoor HC player but he has never been a great claycourter, his clay titles are all minor and he's only made a clay MS final, also the last time he made a clay final was in the SA swing in 2008, so...

Of course he would do better than in grass right now but his best bets are indoor and outdoor HC IMO.

No, I never even suggested it, I'm not talking about what he's like on clay compared to Juan.

Well at least he has multiple titles on clay, which is more than most.

Yep, I agree. We all know that Nalby is one of those who can pretty much beat anyone or lose to anyone.

When he's playing well, he's still more entertaining to watch than most, and despite his injury and form issues over the last few years, you will struggle to find many players who can outplay Nadal and Murray for large patches, as he's done this year.

Nice victory for Ungur.

Ungur is a nice guy : he avoided Dave to receive an humiliation from goat cheese...so now, it's Ungur who will be humiliated, he'll probably be totally clueless. Nalby would have bring goat cheese more trouble than Ungur but Ungur played great, he deserved to win. Dave was in a bad day and played poorly like Davydenko and Hewitt
