Came all the way back for nothing :o

Gulbis served for the second set, lost it. Kuku was up *5-1 40-0 in the third set and didn't win another game until falling down a break in the fourth. Gulbis started the fifth set with a break of serve, had BP for a double break at 2-*0, didn't take it and lost his break lead. Had an opening on return at 4 all to potentially break getting to deuce, failed to take advantage and got broken at love to lose the match.

Two very similar players, two guys who are mentally fragile, unfortunate Gulbis couldn't find a way to close things out. This loss will hurt.

Kukuskin led 6-4 7-6(4) *5-1 40-0 before deciding he would rather toy around with Gulbis before he won. :haha:

Gulbis was a break up in the 5th too.

Anyone knows how many match points did Kukushkin miss in the 3rd set?

Ernests... Why?

I mean. I support Kuku, and I wanted him to win.

But i'm a fan of Best-Gulbis... And I thought this would be, maybe, a new beginning.

Where can one find the match time on the Roland Garros website?

gulbis also had a point for the double break in the fith

one of the matches of year would of been the best comeback of all time in the history of tennis if gulbis managed to do it

Kuku had such a hilarious choke in the 3rd :superlol:

And then I was sure Gulbis would win after winning the next two sets. Okay, no I wasn't. :rolls:

Oh Gulbis!  He should have lost in three, glad to see he fought and came back, so sorry he lost it in the end.

Gulbis got to deuce at 4 all. I thought, OK, he was going to break again, but no, dumps serve to zero to love. Typical Ernests.

4 match points. 3 at 5-1 40-0 ....

Just beautiful how he misses those mps, and despite being two sets and a break up is so distraught he loses 8 games in a row.

the issue about gulbis is that on his day he is top 5 player, kukushkin can only dream of such a label.

nadal said this when he played him at wimbledon, even federer admitted he was outplayed at times in rome when he lost to gulbis

this is why people still have hope for ernie.

if he was more dedicated/motivated and mentally stronger who knows what he could of achieved

what a career full of deception, despair and choking for gulbis.

When your last name can be shortened to Kuku, I guess it's inevitable you're going to play that way. Still, he does seem to survive when it comes to the battle of idiots (much like he did against Monfils).

Gulbis missed three straight returns at 2-*0 40-30 in the fifth set. So basically, he had the chance for a double break and choked. He lost the break advantage on a dropshot miss from behind the baseline. Gulbis called for the trainer in the middle of the 4 all game in the fifth set and basically ran out of gas in the end. Kukushkin was also cramping near the end.

Supposedly Kukushkin was the way better player overall and Gulbis made over 50 errors the first three sets, so he was basically playing horribly before Kuku choked.

Basically, the match was a predictable disaster. Gulbis' comeback isn't something to read into. He's still not playing at a high level if he's getting beaten the way he was by Kukushkin.

Mindless ballbasher def. another mindless ballbasher. Gulbash has had his moment, time to go away to challengers where his presence won't pollute the main tour.

Kuku is somewhat mentally tough.

Gulbis could probably care less about this loss, he's not the kind of guy who takes his tennis very seriously.

pretty obvious Gulbis would have won this if he'd wanted to

which speaks volumes about Kuku

I'm not questioning if Gulbis has more talent than Kuku, but talent counts for nothing if you don't use it properly, Kuku for me has done far more with what he has than Gulbis, Gulbis is a wasted talent, Kuku shows more fight and toughness, it says more about how crappy Gulbis really is, Kuku isn't totally talentless though.

Kukuskin is bizarrely clutch. Whenever it looks like he's gonna make an epic choke, he ends up winning from brink of defeat.
Gulbis is just not clutch in any way.
