Roland Garros R1: [3] Federer def. Kamke 6-2 7-5 6-3

Pretty predictable match, that Roger would play in second-to-third gear and that would be enough, although he was 2-4 down in the second set and struggled closing out the match. Some awesome backhands, at times good serving today from Roger, at times he worked the points really well, but made a lot of loose errors off both sides, partially due to Kamke, but also due to a lack of focus and general poor play.

Kamke is a shotmaker, hits a clean ball, but has a terrible serve, no defense, mediocre volleys and is brainless.

Really, Roger?
He played at 10%... Worst match of 2012 so far.

But who cares. It's R1. The tournament starts in QF, these are exhos, he made 4 pretty good shots to make career highlights, context is useless.

Had he played a decent player he would have lost a set or two.

Kamke was awful yet still had quite a few chances.

WTF was that Fed? This effortless stuff never finishing good. Pick up your exhibition shits and GTFO from Paris . Wouldn't be surprised if he goes out against Nalbandian

Nalbandian is a break down in the third (1 set all). Maybe Roger will play Ungur() instead and reach round 3. ;)

Garbage from Fed. :tape:
Should have been 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 in about an hour's time.
I guess he wanted a bit more of practice, and judging on what I saw, he was in need of that.

Had he played a decent player he would have lost a set or two.

Had he played a decent player (not that there are too many decent unseeded ones) his level would have been much higher. Surely you understand that...

Rogie made history with his win over Kamke today. First tennis player ever, male or female to win 50 or more matches at all 4 grand slams.

Roger's always breaking records. Didn't know this one.

Roger truly a player of all surfaces.

50+ matches won in all 4 slams.
10+ titles in all surfaces.

A horror show from Rogi. Seemed completely disinterested. He could have finished Kamke much earlier on if his mind was on the job at hand.

Stop whining as always. He was rusty, but it is first round, my godness.

Congratulations to Federer on tying Connors for most GS match wins. Another amazing achievement. As for the match, Federer did enough to win, but he could have closed it out a lot earlier if it wasn't for some very loose points. It is a first round match, and he will pick up his game as he advances in the tournament.

Well, Roger should have closed the match out early, but played a few wonderful shots and was hitting the ball crisply too, just a few too many loose errors; basically your typical 1st round Roger Federer match

Ungur is leading 2 sets to one against nalbandian. Guess Roger will reach round 3.

Roger won this match in straight sets and still his stats were horrible - 67% points won on 1st serve, his season average much higher, was 3x broken - his season average is i think 92% service games won - 2nd best after RAonic

Phew ... great escape. All the matches seem so tight. 4-5 sets. many into tie break or 7 games. Must be a slow clay.

Well that's the mark of great champions in any sport; to win without playing near your best.

I would given that Nalby is losing

Roger said about the match:

RF: I came out and did not have much rythm on the serve, on the baseline was well off, didn't play the way I wanted to play. Kamke did well to hang in there and I am glad I got thru against a player I knew nothing about.

about Nalby:

Brad Gilbert:Next match, you have looked at the draw right, do you know unger?
RF:Never heard of him, but know Nalbandian quite well and would like to play Nalbandian more, harder to play someone you don't know at all. Laughing and hoping to play Nalby.

My there is a lot of whinging for a straight set first round match. :worship:

I'd be more worried if he played blindingly. Just a typical first round slam match. Performance to be refined from here.

I fell asleep. Apparently didn't miss much. Congrats Fed on winning 50 at all the slams! He's actually behind Connors still for surfaces (Connors won more on Clay), but has a chance to pass Connors there too.

and just when i thought he can't be more arrogant....

Actually, at first I thought the same as you.
But, even if you're a hater, you have to agree the guy has so many things in his head, he's not 25 anymore, he has more responsabilities.

I remember Hartfield saying stuff like: "When at first played Roger, he played the way I feel the worst. He knew how I was going to play him and then he outplayed me." or something like that.

Also, calling Fed arrogant, is being blind. Check the other top 4 and see it by yourself, but, of course, you'll never agree here.

That's actually a pretty good interview, very interesting to hear him say he thinks he's a better player than "back in the day" even though he struggles with the best these days and how he tries to adapt to the new kind of players out there.

Also quite insane that he travels with his whole family, kids and all. That's probably quite a strain on family life and you have to appreciate his wife, she does not have an easy job in all of this.
