Roland Garros R1: Mahut def. [26] Roddick 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-2

Highly unusual Roddick didn't make the second week in Paris. He can still make Charles de Gaulle for the flight tonight back to the US.

Mahut took advantage of the draw, didn't look close to losing this match to the clay clown.

Just not a good enough performance from A-Rod. What a way for Mahut to end it, with a BH DTL return winner. A-Rod broken seven times in the match. Nicolas was inconsistent but when he was on, he was the clear better player, dominant in rallies, hit several clean winners, with good volleying and net approaches. Roddick started showing some spirit from the middle of the third set to the start of the fourth, getting a break lead to start set four, but lost six of the last seven games.

A-Rod didn't show a ton of fight at the end, and the first couple of sets, this clay season could have been used for him to gain a rhythm with his game, but he didn't show any commitment this clay season. Where he goes from here is up in the air. What's clear is being passive is not going to get him anywhere on any surface.

Least upsetty upset ever.

For Roddick it doesn't matter what happens here. The season re-starts at Queens, basically. This was just match practice.

Deserved win for better and more creative player. Roddick had nothing to build on, just passive pathetic play. Mahut had too much time and space to operate and took advantage from it. R2 vs. Klizan(probably) will be another story. Klizan should be able to dictate play or at least frustrate Mahut in longer rallies. Roddick wasn´t able to do these things. Yeah, and A-Rod is no longer that scary server, his serve is so playable now. Expected result.

Filo V.

Roddick needs match rhythm. So just tanking the clay season isn't wise since he's not winning as much off of it.

You look at his game, he doesn't do anything that well anymore, including his serve, yes, clay makes serves less potent. But he's not fooling people with his serve or blowing them away as he previously did. And the easy errors he's making, with more match rhythm, would those exist?

He showed fight in the third set. Some commitment is there. But not enough. If he's not fully committed, he should retire.

Looking at how he played last week at the WTC,it was obvious he wasn`t into the clay season.Probably any guy in the draw, even a wildcard could have beaten him here.

Second, in 2010 he got past Zverev 6-1 6-2 6-4 and then gave some troubles to future semifinalist Melzer.

No offense, but anyone who thinks Roddick is suddenly going to turn into a world beater when the grass season starts is seriously deluding themselves. He is overweight, slow and completely out of shape. There is no power to his shots. Not even on his serve. Opponents are hitting winners off of it at will. If he reaches the third round at Wimbledon, it would already have to be considered a success.

What is disappointing is that he didn't give a sh*t on what is gonna happen. He just looked like he wanted to be out of the court as soon as possible. There was just no fight at all, i just dont get his logic at all, eh was given the easiest draw to go to the third round as possible and he didn't seize it. He could definitely beat Mahut if he cared. This is just low for Roddick.

I know he won`t lose points here, but looking at his ranking he is on the brink of not beeing seeded.

It's sad to see this serve-bot mug here, where he could give other opportunities to lower (but better right now) ranked players, specially on this surface. He doesn't even gives a damn. That's the more anoying thing. And I'm not saying that he would win if he cared, but still, a little effort wouldn't hurt anyone...

It´s just not going to happen. He plays like crap, he doesn´t have any weapons left, he doesn´t give a damn, he´s out of shape. These things are not going to be changed by the surface. He might win a match or two, but the writing is clearly on the wall.

At the stage and age that he is now, he should be fighting and training harder than ever, if he still wants to achieve some success. Yet he seems less motivated and more out of shape than ever.

He won't be a world beater but the least he should do is get a Eurostar across the Channel and get practicing somewhere like Roehampton. It's a defining grass season for him, if he has poor results expect him to call it a day soon, if he does pretty well he may fight on.

What a clay season for Roddick. Suffered two whitewashes at the hands of Berlocq and Berdych, respectively, and losses to clay court clowns such as Soeda and Mahut.

Was there anyone on this forum full of knowledgeable tennis fans who honestly thought Andy was going to win a match at RG this year? Really?

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He never should have played any matches on clay, he's not healthy, he wasn't ready, and he's probably screwed up his grass season now (not that he was going to do anything spectacular anyway).

He is looking to salvage a few good results in tournaments that mean something to him, and then retire at the USO. Honestly, if he keeps playing past this year I will be genuinely surprised.
