Roland Garros R1 : Del Potro def. Montañes 6-2 6-7(5) 6-2 6-1

Montañes hasn't been the same since the hernia problems, but even at his best he'd struggle against del Potro.

Albert played a good 2nd set, then Delpo had a timeout and moved even slower in between points. After 2-2 in the 3rd, Montañes was average and del Potro didn't make many errors winning 10 of the last 11 games.

Good win for Juan, far more difficult than the scoreline suggests. Now needs to get that knee sorted out and try to go as far as possible here without endangering his long term health.

Hard to take much from Del Potro's injury and form in this match. He was fantastic in patches and obviously the injury is a concern, but it seemed to hurt a lot more when he was choking away those leads in the second set.

Nice to get through anyhow. :yeah: Montanes was pretty terrible.

Montanes' meltdown was spectacular stuff. You'd think being the dirt specialist he'd be solid and grind and make it a war but he just completely imploded like Gulbis on a bad day.

The last set was a cakewalk and will have done Del Potro's physical situation no harm at all.

Montanes needs to work on his mentality and concentration - that's what let him down today, not his game.

Montanes cant take advatage of injured opponent, we know that much from last years legendary match vs Fog.

I'm worried.

You and me both. Juan really can't catch a break with his injuries. I really hope he somehow sorts it out for this tournament.

if the injury gets worse i can see one of ferrero or cilic taking him out

Albert wore down physically. DelPo raised his game after he took a pain tablet but he's definitely someone to look for to lose early here. Montanes did an awesome job even taking a set, since DelPo was totally knocking him around from the baseline. He got dispirited and lost fight after the middle of the third set.

Good effort from JMDP, but this knee situation is definitely not a good one for him going forward.

More difficult than the score suggests. Montanes just couldn't deal with Del Potro's power in the end. That knee injury is a worry for him though.

Delpo had his chances to lead 5-2 in the 2nd set and serve for the set but he did not only lost those chances to break but lost his serve too and lost and advantage of 5-2 in the tie break of that set.

His knee injury doesn't look good but to add elapse time to his early matches will definitely not help him as the tournament advance. A potential 3rd round match with Cilic will be the key to know where he is really standed.

I think even with the injury he'll make 4th round given Cilic is his bitch, but to face Berdych he has to be fully fit and that didn't seem to be the case today.

Worried about this.

Even if he's not fully fit, i definitely expect Delpo to get past ERV comfortably. However, i'm not too confident about his 3R match were he should face a tougher challenge in Cilic or JCF (I just can't count the spaniard out in that clash). Too bad about the knee injury really, tennis needs a fit and healthy Del Potro.

Hit the nail on the head here. Hope we get it as soon as possible.

Anyway, Del Potro's presser:

"My knee is troubling me, because I can't feel it... The diagnosis is a bit weird, you should ask the doctor (...) I have two days to recover and I believe I will. I think of the tournament day by day, I haven't though about rivals in later rounds.

The ranking will take care of itself, I had chances to go up, but the guys above me are all playing great. Today I only think of Vasselin, my next opponent."

Good attitude, he should be thinking long term. He should eventually get his ranking up and become a Slam contender. For now, it's all about hanging in there, staying as fit as possible and doing the best he can.

 If you step out on court, then you are not injured. He should drop the crybaby act and just play tennis or withdraw.

Isn't Nadal always injured when he loses??

When Nadal loses and says he was injured = faking mug
When Del-Shitro loses and says he was injured = MTF pity party

Fuck that.

If he's really injured he should withdraw and not ruin chances of other players. If he's injured and still comes out on court, he should stfu and stop being a crybaby. Simple.

He had his knee taoed and took pain killers and won the match, he said he was ok after he won, there was no crying.
Btw rafa won plenty of matches with taped knees it's part of the game, even Fed took painkillers in Madrid, and i hear Murray may need injections.
No one wants to withdraw unless they have no choice, it's a slam after all.
