2012 RG Round of 16 (and on) predictions

Commentary is welcome.

Djokovic-Verdasco. Djokovic will be just getting going, Seppi I do not trust, though an upset Seppi over Nando would be welcome.
Wawrinka-Tsonga. Interesting section here, Troicki is the seed, Bellucci can score the upset, but Fognini is also in this section. Tsonga should get through. Wawrinka is there, but can be upset.

Federer-Kubot. Nalby in the 2nd is tough, but Fed will get through and Kubot usually does well in slams.
Delpo-Berdych. Big hitting paradise, if both are healthy, should get through.

Ferrer-Isner. Ferrer too solid, Isner can be upset.
Gasquet-Andreev. I see Murray losing early.

Tipsarevic-Almagro. Both guys clearly a cut above the rest of the section.
Monaco-Nadal. Raonic-Monaco in the 3rd will be a doozy, is Raonic ready to get a big scalp on clay?

QF:

Djokovic-Tsonga. Tsonga will ride the crowd over Wawrinka, Djokovic too much for Verdasco
Federer-Berdych. Fed will win easy, Berdych will win in 4 over Delpo.
Ferrer-Gasquet. Gasquet really has a good draw here for a QF run, Ferrer too solid on this clay.
Almagro-Nadal. The favorites, sure, and for good reason.

SF:

Djokovic-Federer. Both win QF matches, I have Fed in 5.
Ferrer-Nadal. We've seen this story before.

F:

Nadal def. Djokovic, 7th RG.

Of course, I see a lot of potential here. Haas can make a run, can Tsonga take out Nole? Berdych over Fed? Almagro or Ferrer finally beating Nadal?

R16

Djokovic def. Verdasco - in 3 sets, no much to say here, better player will win.

Tsonga def. Simon - in 4 sets, inspired by the French crowd, Jo will have his best RG ever.

Fed def. Lopez - no history here. I guess Fed could be taken out by Nalby if the latter somehow rolls back the years and plays his best. But chances are very slim, and Lopez ain't beating him for sure. Fed in 3.

Del Potro def. Berdych - Bad match-up for Tomas on slow surfaces, even if he is playing very well. Assuming Del Potro is fit and playing well, he should take this one in 4 max, especially considering Berdych's fatigue - has been playing non-stop for several weeks.

Isner def. Ferrer - The best serve tennis has ever seen will take Isner to the quarter-finals. He has an easy draw up to round 4, so should have enough in the tank to serve Ferrer off the court. In 4 sets.

Dolgopolov def. Murray - breakthrough tournament for Alex, who takes an exhausted and not fully fit Murray out. Bold bet here, I know, Alex could equally be gone by round 1.

Almagro def. Tipsarevic - in 3 sets. Tipsy has an easy draw but his journey ends here, Almagro is a very clay courter and should reach the quarters.

Nadal def. Raonic - in 3 sets. Raonic's serve could be enough to get to R4 but not to beat Nadal on clay, or even trouble him. A humbling experience for the youngster.

1/4

Djokovic def. Tsonga - in 4. Jo will use the energy from the crowd to play a good match, but his clay mugginess will end up prevailing.

Federer def. Del Potro - in 3 easy sets. Del Potro obviously can beat Federer at Slam level, but his efforts since coming back have been piss poor, seems content to go down without a fight. Until I see a different attitude, only reasonable prediction is Federer in 3.

Dolgopolov def. Isner - in 4 sets. Isner jaded after beating Ferrer, Dolgo always played great vs big servers, reaches his first Slam semi.

Nadal def. Almagro - in 3 sets. Almagro will play well but ultimately choke each and every set.

1/2

Djokovic def. Federer - 4 sets. This time, Federer can't summon the needed strength to outlast and beat Nole.

Nadal def. Dolgopolov - 3 routine sets. Dolgo's dream run comes to an end against his worst match-up on tour, none of the sets will be close.

Final

Djokovic def. Nadal - in epic 5 sets to become the first man since Rod Laver to hold all 4 Slams.

Djoker-Verdasco.
Simon-Fognini. Fog made the QF's here last year, don't see why he can't do it again. Simon's been great this clay court swing, plus he'll have the Parisan crowd to cheer him on. Simon probably wins again.
Federer-Kubot. Kubot's got a dream draw and does very well at Slams (4th round at Wimbledon and AO in the past, as well as a 3rd round here last year).
Del Potro-Berdych. Match of the round, and could be one of the matches of the tournament. I narrowly favour Berdych.
Ferrer-Isner. Isner is dangerous - he can beat anyone, or can lose to anyone. Nevertheless, his draw is very easy. Ferrer is probably too solid for Jizzner, but who knows?
Doglopolov-Murray. Dolgo's a bit of a dangerous floater too, and Murray might be in questionable shape. Gasquet could get in here, but he'll probably choke.
Tipsaveric-Almagro
Nadal-Monaco. Contrary to popular belief, I don't see Raonic getting to the 4th round.

QF:

Djoker-Simon. Despite the Parsian crowd, Djoker will win in straights.
Federer-Berdych. Match of the round, a lot depends on Fed's energy levels.
Ferrer-Murray. Murray's out of shape and isn't that great on clay. The clay pusher will beat the hard pusher.
Almagro-Nadal. Nadal wins easily.

SF:

Djoker-Federer. Lean Djokovic, but Fed can get the upset in good circumstances.
Ferrer-Nadal. Can you guess?

F:

Djokovic-Nadal. So much on the line, will be a great match. Nadal narrowly.

Who cares about the other matches.

nadal, with his cupcake/fairytale draw, in the final is a lock barring injury.

As for the other finalist I say either federer or djokovic.

If it is federer he will get some set points blow some of them, win a set, maybe lead in another set but be broken right back, he's BP coversion ratio will be something like 2/15 and nadal will win.

If t is djokovic maybe the match will go to 5 but nadal will probably win also.

So let's get this over with and finish the crappiest part of the season, aka clay, and move on to the beautiful grass.

This. It's a depressing draw. Tennis got robbed.

Seeing Nadal go up against Almagro and Ferrer again is depressing. Almagro is 0-7 vs Nadal. Lost in 3 straight both times he played Nadal in RG before. Highlight was 2008 and the sacred 6-1 x 3

Ferrer? After vulturing on kneedal in 2011 AO he hasn't taken a set vs Nadal in 4 tries. Often had something going just to choke horribly and that Rome fail is fresh in his memory.

Yawn.

I'm just gonna follow Berdych and Delpo and hope they at least crash the party for one top3 seed

People way too confident on Berdych, I think. He'll probably lose to Del Potro in R4. It's just a bad match-up for Tomas: all their matches on slow courts have been routine wins for Juan. He did beat him in the ultra fast courts of Madrid, but in a slow court he would need to play lights out to go past Juan (assuming Delpo is fit of course). On this surface, he can't finish points off fast as in Madrid unfortunately and in longer rallies it will probably be the same story as every time Delpo faces a fellow big hitter: his superior power and consistency will prevail.

As if this were not enough, Tomas has been playing non-stop for several weeks, doubt he will have enough left in the tank to take down Del Potro. I would like to see him do it; I like both guys and I trust Berdych to take it to Federer far more than Juan, who seems to have developed a fetish for felating Federer on court :o - seriously, his lack of fight when facing Federer has been painful to see since his comeback (bar the match in Dubai).

But can't see it happening. Tomas's time to shine will come at Wimbledon, I think, he can beat anyone there.

That said, if he won RG, it'd be pretty epic: going past Del Potro, Federer, Djokovic and Nadal consecutively - the top 4 favorites according to bookies + four active Slam winners still in prime/not over the hill - would be pretty epic. Would be the stuff legends are made of, but realistically he shouldn't even get past Del Potro if their match-up dynamics is anything to go by.

In terms of knocking over Nole that was more in hope, but the guy's been playing well (dunno why he bothered with the WTC) and must be considered in the mix on current form. He did all he could against Nadal but it was slow clay and it's always required a winner machine to go sick to knock him over on that surface.

Yup, his form is great but his time to shine should be at Wimbledon. I believe he has a shot there, not here.

Really can't see him past Del Potro on this surface. It's just a bad match-up for him when he can't finish points off early (like in Madrid). Of course Del Potro's knee condition is a question mark, if he gets knocked off earlier things will look up for Tomas.

Even if he does pull off the win, it'd take a lot out of him probably and he'd be drained to face Federer. Draw hasn't been kind to him.

And as you said, WTC doesn't seem like a very good choice either, he hasn't had a rest for a long time. Really can't see him being a big threat here. At Wimbledon, yes, it's the Slam that most suits his game, he can beat anyone there.
