I'm so damn happy with Jo, he played good, with not many UEs and a lot of winners.

Beeing clay and considering Delpo is winning over him recently, i'm so damn happy today :D :D

IMO, a surprise.

Sad to see Del Potro struggling with injuries again, hopefully nothing too serious given RG being around the corner.

Jojo turned in one of his better clay court performances though, especially important was the backhand holding up so well in the first set.

Jo :D Hope he takes the confidence he needs from this to attack the grass season (and Roland Garros). QF Monte Carlo, R16 Madrid, QF Roma. Awesome clay season for Jo's standards-

Juan - thanks for not retiring and letting Tsonga have this win with a full match. Now go sort out that knee and get ready for Roland Garros.

Yup. I really hope it ain't serious and he can be fully fit for RG. Hope the reason for this performance is that he didn't try to force the knee.

Glad he didn't retire as well, Jo needed this win to boost his confidence and it wouldn't have been the same had Juan retired.

Del Potro must get the Top 8 to be a serious threat in the biggest tournaments.

A position in the Top 8 gives 'bye' in 6 out of 9 Masters 1000 and secures avoiding 3rd or 4th round meetings with Ferrer-Berdych-Tsonga who are on a different level than Simon, Tipsarevic, Isner, Almagro etc.

Del Mugtro.... loosing to Tsonga on clay this is pathetic and in straight sets... being this grass or indoors o.k. but really Delpo can´t afford loosing to player like Tsonga on clay. I was really thinking he is playing good and is beating on clay players he is supposed to beat, but this is really unexpected and pathetic. Happy for Jo that he gains some points, because he will be defending a lot in 2nd half of the season

Bar the first few games, he was using his serve basically to just put the ball in play.

Really hope he can be fully fit for RG. Another setback at this point would be terrible.

Oh and congrats to Tsonga on the best clay season of his career so far. Confidence should be high for the grass season, hopefully

now we need somebody to upset Fed and that'd be that.

True. It was great of Juan not to retire and let Tsonga get his win by playing the full match, especially Tsonga really needed the boost in his confidence after some bad results lately.

Not such a surprise for me... :)

For me either. There are specific circumstances:

- Del Potro's fatigue (his 12th match in the last three weeks, Tsonga's barely 5th)
- Tsonga is better under floodlights
- clay-courts in Rome are relatively fast

Not sure how beating an obviously injured/playing like crap opponent is a big confidence builder. Anyway Tsonga seems to never lack for confidence.

It's not particularly big, but it's better than winning by opponent retirement.

IMO, it's a sign of class when an injured player let his opponent get the win in a full match instead of just retiring. It's a sign of respect towards your opponent.

That is a common sentiment but I'm not sure the players really think that. Every player (even country club hacks) know when they won because they deserved it and when they essentially got a "walkover" from an injured player and the latter is a tainted victory as would a retirement.

Speaking of class - I switched to Fed/JCF right after match point but PLEASE tell me that Tsonga had enough class to NOT do his victory dance in Del Po's face.

Of course he did his victory dance, you might have noticed that he's been doing it after every single match he's won since the beginning of his career. And obviously he didn't do it "in delpo's face", whatever that means.

He just played a lot of tennis(3 weeks) and got a knee injury, so now he has extra time to heal before RG.

 No, he is not better on clay. Delpo has 4 clay court titles and made the semis at RG and Tsonga hasn't done anything on this surface until now.

This is by far the most surprising result of the tournament thus far. Hope Juan is OK. Still expecting big things from him this year. As for Tsonga...well quite frankly he needed the boost in confidence this win must give him. Can't see him doing much on the dirt but I look forward to seeing him on the grass :yeah:

Very good from Tsonga ! I never see him played so well this year....looks like he finally got some juice back ! He played like in the end of 2011 with a forehand on fire, playing the lines and some really nice volley. Hope he can at least have full energy for Roland Garros and played his best.
DelPotro obviously very disappointed but this Tsonga was way better than the others 2012 meetings and with the injury it was too difficult, even if he did some nice things in the first set.
